A Jewel of an Affordable Power Cable
PS Audio's Power Punch proved that a high quality power cable didn't have to be pricey. Its successor, The Jewel AC, maintains all of the benefits of the Power Punch, including the ferrite impregnated jacket, machined connector prongs, and, of course the low price.
New to the Jewel are smaller connectors so that the cable will fit better in tighter installations. The shielding has been reworked to provide better coverage and noise rejection. And the cable uses more, smaller strands to achieve the same 12 AWG size.
Pure OFC Oxygen-Free Copper
The Jewel is a 12-gauge power cable built around pure OFC oxygen-free copper with double shielding to keep out noise. From the machined prongs hewn from a solid billet of material, to the cold and hot welding, hermetically sealed connectors, double shields, and finely stranded spirally wound conductors, the Jewel will open your eyes and your ears with an impressive level of improvement.
Virtually every aftermarket high-end power cord uses a similar style of off-the-shelf male and female AC power connector. The plug prong of these connectors is a three-piece affair made from a piece of stamped metal with holes in the prongs. The prong and clamp are made from brass and the screw is constructed of steel. There are many problems with this build style. Multiple pieces are prone to oxidation, corrosion, and poor fit. And using a steel screw to pressure copper against the brass prong does not make the best connection in the world.
PS Audio engineering designed an entirely new male and female connector from the ground up. The company machined its own prongs out of a solid block of high-copper-content brass and nickel-plated the exposed male prongs. By machining the new prongs from a solid block of material, the company was also able to resolve the dilemma of the unnecessary hole in the mating prong as well as the dissimilar metal problem.
Even the female side of the cable is revolutionary. The grip force of the IEC end of the Jewel is so strong that you can literally dangle a piece of equipment from the power cable without it falling.
Two Forms of Welding
The Jewel employs two forms of welding to fuse the conductor to the machined prong: cold and hot. Cold welding exerts thousands of pounds of pressure supplied through the force of a hydraulic press to squeeze the two metals together such that the metal structure of the two pieces actually fuse together. To further insure a perfect connection, each of the machined prongs is then soldered with high silver content solder in a hot welding technique to create the perfect bond.
Finally, to address long-term connectivity concerns, PS Audio designed an outer shell that is molded over the machined, cold and hot welded connectors.
Removable Ground Pin
The ground pin on a power cable ties the ground of the AC receptacle to your equipment. However, in some cases, this ground pin can cause a ground loop and introduce hum and buzz in your system. AV enthusiasts often use an inexpensive three-prong-to-two-prong adapter 'cheater plug' to solve this problem and break the ground loop. Unfortunately, this adapter ruins many of the benefits of a high-end power cable.
PS Audio engineers invented a better way by adding a screw-in ground pin. Normally, you would leave this alone. Should your system have a ground loop problem that is causing hum or buzz in the loudspeakers, however, simply unscrew the ground pin of the Jewel and the buzz is gone. Nothing could be easier, and this approach preserves the integrity of the Jewel and its connection to your AC power source.
