"A Clear Winner"
Pro-Ject's Tube Box S phono preamplifier with a tube output stage offers unrivalled performance and unique flexibility at an incredibly affordable price. It's one of the most economical ways to enjoy the lush sound of vacuum tube phono gear that we know of, and the ultra-compact size means that the Tube Box S can fit almost anywhere.
The sonic quality of Tube Box S is extremely impressive, offering a big improvement over Pro-Ject's great sounding Phono Box S. It makes a big improvement over the built-in phono stage on many amps and receivers and offers a perfect upgrade for most analog hi-fi systems.
"Full Bodied, Natural and Warm"
"The Pro-Ject Tube Box is a clear winner with the Koetsu Black" phono cartridge, reports Phil Gold in his November 2004 review for EnjoyTheMusic.com. "The sound is full bodied, natural and warm, with a surprising degree of detail The sound is spacious and there is good width and depth to the image."
A Wide Range of Setting Parameters
With a wide range of setting parameters, the Pro-Ject Tube Box S can meet the needs of almost any MM moving magnet or MC moving coil phono cartridge on the market. It offers switchable input impedance/capacitance settings and three adjustable gain levels. A switchable subsonic filter prevents your amplifier and speakers from picking up ultra-low rumble below 20 Hz.
The class-leading music reproduction of the Tube Box S gives pure dynamics, full transparency, analog warmth, bass texture, detail resolution, and purity through all audible frequencies.
"I put these phono stages through their paces with both a low output moving coil cartridge, the Koetsu Black Goldline, and then with a high output cartridge, the Dynavector DV20 XH. The cartridges were mounted in my trusty Ittok on a Linn LP12 turntable, while the amplifier and speakers were the Perreaux Radiance R200i and Wilson Benesch Act 1s respectively, linked up using SoundString and Cardas cabling from end to end, making for a high resolution test bed.
"The Koetsu puts out 600uV and is optimally loaded at around 100O. Loading each of the units as close as possible, and first giving each unit a week to run in, I started to listen.
"The Pro-Ject Tube Box is a clear winner with the Koetsu Black. The sound is full bodied, natural and warm, with a surprising degree of detail. It is not the most open on top, rolling off gracefully, but this serves to minimize the surface noise compared to the other units. It is well extended in the bass but not as well defined there as the Clearaudio. The sound is spacious and there is good width and depth to the image."

|S for Small package, Big performance|
I dont know what other modern phono stages sound like. I know this one sounds amazing w Black Mamba cables. Night and day improvement over the phono-in on my main pre-amp. Can be configured for nearly any cartridge, solid connectors, clear instructions and is surprisingly hefty. This little guy gets his own shelf. TY once again AA.

I have bought a Audio Research preamp LS 17 SE. And my MC cartridge was unable to give a signal strong enough. This is an axcellent preamp, with 2 ECC 83 tubes that gives an excelent result at a fair ptice.

Audiophiles generally will not recommend any Phono Pre under 1,000. I guess a lot of people have been disappointed by the offerings in the budget category. This one is an exception. It sounds big and detailed and you can tube roll. Deserves good phono RCAs.
