"This Is 'It' For Me," Says HiFi+ Magazine
Habitat1 from REL Acoustics is a brilliant new concept that takes subwoofer bass to new levels by incorporating the room – your habitat – into subwoofer design. It is common in design circles to speak of taking the room into account, but never has the complete system approach employed by REL been utilized so utterly to one singular purpose. Perfect, deep bass that emanates almost invisibly from somewhere hidden within the room.
"This is 'it' for me," reports Alan Sircom in HiFi+ magazine, Issue 105. "There are perhaps subwoofers that go deeper than the REL Habitat 1 (some of which I've tested), but none that combine the Hab's ease of connection, discreet installation and just general all-round 'rightness'."
Dual Active Woofers and One Passive Woofer
Starting with a clean sheet of paper, REL designed custom bass mini-engine drivers to produce awe inspiring bass inside an ultra-thin cabinet. The sealed-cabinet design uses two 6.5" front-firing active long-throw woofers with a steel chassis and one 10" back-firing passive woofer with a steel chassis.
Pumping out the bass is a very clean and well designed Class D, 150 Watts (RMS) built-in power amplifier.
Ease of Installation
REL spent months engineering the mounting hardware to permit easy and accurate mounting of Habitat1 onto a variety of wall structures including masonry or brick walls, modern sheet rock, and stud construction. You can also place Habitat1 on the floor using the optional Floor Mount (sold separately).
Although Habitat1 is intended for wireless use with the included REL LongbowTM Wireless Transmitter, the rear panel includes all of the standard connectivity so that you have the option of using Habitat1 wired if desired.
Both the Habitat1 subwoofer and the LongbowTM Wireless Transmitter have a single high-level Neutrik Speakon input (cable included), a low-level phono input, and an LFE phono input. Controls consist of Phase (0 or 180 degrees), High-Low Level, .1/LFE High-Low Level, Crossover (30-120 Hz).
Super Secret Filter Technology
One of REL's unique technologies is embedded within Habitat1's input and filter boards. This is so secret that even now, every unit is encased within an impregnable compound that ensures destruction of critical components if disturbed. These circuits allow all the speed and transparency of bass REL's are famous for. Habitat1 can crossover as low as 25Hz, ensuring the ability to blend perfectly even when used with very sophisticated speakers.
"This review marks the end of my subwoofer journey. This is 'it' for me – there are perhaps subwoofers that go deeper than the REL Habitat 1 (some of which I've tested), but none that combine the Hab's ease of connection, discreet installation and just general all-round 'rightness'. For now, at least, the subwoofer game is over, and someone else will carry the subwoofin' baton now."
