"You'll Come Away Impressed"
Hear music as it was intended to be heard with the Sony HAP-S1 integrated amplifier with built-in DAC and high-resolution streaming abilities. With its Class AB amplifier, this hi-res system also boasts 500GB of hard drive space, support for DSD audio along with the full range of hi-res file formats, and built-in Wi-Fi for transferring audio from your PC. Just add speakers and you've got an amazing sounding, top performing music system for your digital files. And it excels with traditional analog audio sources, too.
"As a player, it does a superb job, with an interface that makes accessing music not only easy but fun," reports Mark Fleischmann in Sound&Vision magazine for April 25, 2014.
"If you have your doubts about this product and/or this product category, I urge you to audition the Sony. If the dealer's demo room is of decent quality, I have no doubt you'll come away impressed," notes Sean Killebrew in a April 14, 2014 post for HomeTheaterReview.com.
Hi-Res Music Playback
Practically every hi-res file format has met its match. Whatever the acronym from PCM to DSD and beyond the Sony HAP-S1 is prepared to play it flawlessly. The HAP-S1 can playback and decode a wide range of file formats, including DSD (DSF, DSDIFF), PCM (44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 88.2 kHz, 96 kHz, 176.4 kHz, 192 kHz and 16-bit, 24-bit, 32-bit) DSD (2.8/ 5.6 MHz), WAV, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC, ATRAC Advanced Lossless, ATRAC, MP3, AAC, and WMA formats.
500GB Hard Drive for Music Playback
The Sony doesn't just play your music. It stores your music, too. So you don't need to switch on your computer to enjoy a huge playlist. The HAP-S1 will store music in all formats, including hi-res, for local music playback on the built-in 500GB hard drive. Need even more capability? You've got it. The storage space is expandable using USB external hard drives, which you can plug into the Sony.
Dual Mono, Wide Bandwidth Power Amp
No need for anything else except a pair of speakers to begin filling the room with your favorite tunes. The Sony incorporates an audiophile-quality 40-watt-per-channel power amplifier. The pristine sounding Class-AB analog amp utilizes an EBT (emitter balance transistor) with a cut-off frequency of over 300MHz for the final transistor. The amp device features minimal phase variation up to the high range and excellent transient response for that winning combination of excitement and realism.
The Sony's dual mono format with separate circuitry for left and right channels minimizes interference between channels and ensures clear, high-quality sound reproduction. The resilient high range reproduces sound with rich musicality and a high degree of faithfulness.
Large EI Core Transformer
A low iron-loss type EI core transformer curbs leakage flux, utilizing core material, varnish, and vacuum impregnation for superior sound quality. As a result, excellent spatial representation and rich resonant timbre are produced. The core size is large for this class, and thick winding wire helps achieve rich, resonant timbre.
An acoustically tuned, custom power source block capacitor features not only improved electrolytic solution and electrode foil magnification, but also superior case form, sleeve material and length. Only Sony utilizes this component, which is optimally tuned with chemical capacitor length and sleeve cut.
Analog FIR Filters
The HAP-S1's premium digital-to-analog converter effectively reduces high-frequency noise in DSD signals for exceptional musical purity. It features independent right and left channels, with four analog FIR (Finite Impulse Response) filters per channel producing a combined one-clock delay. FIR filters are ideal for D/A conversion of DSD signals and are one of the reasons why the Sony sounds so musical.
For best performance with compressed digital formats, Sony's Digital Sound Enhancement Engine offers natural sound with a spacious feel by restoring high frequency sound and the tail shape of the waveform likely to be removed through the audio compression process.
Newly designed built-in Wi-Fi increases whole-house coverage and signal strength. HAP-S1 is rigorously tested to ensure its Wi-Fi signal strength. This real world testing is to certify it will work under the most extreme conditions.
'HDD Audio Remote' for iOS and Android Phones and Tablets
A dedicated app controls your listening experience with the HAP-S1. Create playlists, search stored music and full track control.
Expandable Storage via USB
Connect external hard drives to expand the players storage capabilities.
Music Transfer Software
Compatible with both Windows and Mac computers, this simple music transfer software allows you to select your music folder and sync it with the HAP-S1/S.
High-Rigidity Chassis Structure
Its all-in-one compact size and sturdy 3mm-thick solid aluminum design extends from front panel to top panel for a high-rigidity chassis structure.
"This handsome DSD-capable audio player with built-in storage takes the pesky computer out of computer audio, and its way more fun to use."
"As a player, it does a superb job, with an interface that makes accessing music not only easy but fun. Thats one of the things a big company like Sony can bring to the table: showmanship. And the DAC is first-rate."
- Mark Fleischmann, Sound&Vision, April 25, 2014
"So who is the HAP-S1 for? Its suitable for audiophiles without question but its designed mostly for music lovers. With enough marketing muscle, word of mouth and the inevitable price drop associated with electronics, it should help convert the high-res curious."
"If you have your doubts about this product and/or this product category, I urge you to audition the Sony. If the dealer's demo room is of decent quality, I have no doubt you'll come away impressed."
