"An Outstanding Listening Experience"
The RPM-5.1 turntable from Pro-Ject makes an impressive statement in a 'value oriented' performance package featuring a Sumiko Blue Point No. 2 high-output moving coil cartridge that is factory mounted for your convenience. The RPM-5.1 also includes a standard Pro-Ject felt turntable mat and Cork-it upgrade mat, a $25.00 value!
"It brings forth more of the fine details that make listening more engaging and rewarding. Its sound is far closer to the bigger Pro-Ject 'tables and worth the extra coin," notes The Absolute Sound magazine
"This is probably the best deal in entry-level audiophile going. With the stock Sumiko Blue Point No.2 it ends up being a much better deal than getting a cheaper Pro-Ject or Rega and upgrading to a good MC cartridge," says RecordPlayerReviews.net.
Resonance-Optimized Platter System
For signal purity, the RPM-5.1 uses a resonance-optimized platter system. A platter made from MDF rests upon an MDF plinth with a suspended motor assembly optimized for low resonance and speed stability. The table incorporates a stainless steel axle that runs on a Teflon bearing plate in a bronze housing for lower wow-and-flutter. Three-point aluminum cone feet further reduce noise and vibration.
Pro-Ject 9cc Carbon-Fiber Tonearm
The custom Pro-Ject 9cc tonearm and arm tube are fashioned from a single piece of carbon-fiber. The conical carbon-fiber arm tube resists standing wave reflections for cleaner sound. The inverted tonearm bearing comprises four hardened stainless tips in ABEC7 spec ball races. Rings provide very solid arm bearing housings. The outside ring is open to avoid resonances.
Adjustability features ensure the best possible playback. The design of counterweight effectively counteracts unwanted resonances. The counterweight shaft lowered to the record level reduces cantilever forces and dynamic wow when playing warped records. The solid arm base permits accurate height adjustment of the arm tube and VTA (vertical tracking angle). The included counterweight is suitable for cartridges weighing between 6 and 10 grams. The single-screw attachment of the arm tube allows rotation for easy adjustment of needle azimuth despite the fixed headshell.
The internal wiring consists of flexible high-purity copper from the headshell right through to the gold-plated phono jacks. The silicone-damped arm lift can be adjusted to suit the working height of the arm.
Sumiko Blue Point No 2. MC Phono Cartridge
The Pro-Ject RPM-5.1 turntable comes with everything you need for your musical enjoyment. Not only is the quality tonearm included, but also a Sumiko Blue Point No. 2 moving coil phono cartridge.
Offering exceptional performance and musicality at an affordable price the latest generation the Blue Point No. 2 sets a new standard in its price class. It boasts a moving coil design, high output, 2.5-mV, alloy cantilever, Blue Point-cut elliptical diamond stylus, and standard 1/2" mounting.
Cork-it Upgrade Cork Turntable Mat
Turntable mats definitely influence sound quality. A superior phono cartridge will easily be affected by the interaction between your record and the surface of your platter.
Common felt mats provide a smooth contact between the record and platter, but they have the disadvantage of accumulating static electricity. That means that felt mats often collect a lot of dust, which can be then transfered to the record. Also the damping ability of felt is very limited, which can be a problem with metal platters.
Thick rubber turntable mats are another solution, but they 'overdamp' the record and have an isolation effect which leaves the static on the record, Audible noise clicks are the result.
A cork mat provides an extremely effective upgrade. Resonances from metal platters are damped more effectively than with a felt mat, cork doesn't attract dust, and they also it also makes solid enough contact with the platter to avoid static.
"It rewarded us with some very impressive bass," notes Richard Black in his TechRadar.com review for July 14, 2009. "Low-frequency instruments seem to gain an extra couple of semitones of clearly audible range, while percussion and special effects have more impact."

"The RM-5 and Blue Point No. 2 make a formidable combination in the sub-kilobuck sweepstakes, and the carbon-fiber arm is a pleasant surprise… It brings forth more of the fine details that make listening more engaging and rewarding. Its sound is far closer to the bigger Pro-Ject 'tables and worth the extra coin."
- Jim Hannon, The Absolute Sound, June 2007
"Most people don't think twice dropping $1,000 for a laptop computer that will be obsolete and replaced in two or three years when a thinner version comes up. The RM-5 will bring you musical enjoyment for decades, while allowing you to expand your music collection at a very low cost, and discovering music you may never have tried before."
"It will provide noticeably better sound quality than a CD player and will last you a lifetime."
