A 16 Millimeter Glass Platter Kit, 29.3 Centimeters Across
This is Rega's 16 millimeter glass platter kit for the Planar 3 and Planar 6, sold each. The platter is polished glass, 16 millimeters thick and 29.3 centimeters in diameter — substantially more mass than the platters those decks ship with.
A heavier platter makes a better flywheel. Once it is up to speed, small variations in motor torque move it less, so speed steadies as a direct consequence of mass rather than of anything clever happening in the electronics behind it.
Mass, and Glass That Damps as Well as Weighs
Fit and Materials
The platter is 16 millimeters thick and 29.3 centimeters across, manufactured to Rega's own standards. Compared with the 10 and 12 millimeter platters lower in the range, the extra thickness is the point: it is where the added flywheel effect comes from.
Glass brings inherent damping as well as mass. A material that rings would turn a heavier platter into a larger resonator; glass absorbs rather than returns, which is why Rega uses it across the range instead of metal.
It fits the Planar 3 and the Planar 6. Because it is thicker than the platter you are removing, the record will sit higher — re-check arm height and vertical tracking angle once it is on.
Who Is This Platter Kit Best For?
- You own a Planar 3 or Planar 6 — the two turntables Rega cuts this kit for
- You want more flywheel — 16 millimeters against the 12 the Planar 3 ships with
- Your platter is chipped — glass survives a lot, but not a knock on the edge
- You have already dealt with the belt and the supply — platter mass is the next thing that changes speed stability
- Your tonearm has no height adjustment — a thicker platter raises the record and you will have no way to correct the tracking angle; a same-thickness replacement from turntable parts and add-ons avoids that
How Do You Fit It?
Slip the belt off the pulley and lift the old platter clear. Glass at 16 millimeters is genuinely heavy — use both hands and keep it flat. Lower the new platter onto the sub-platter, refit the belt and spin by hand. Re-set arm height for the new record height before playing.
Pairs Well With
What most owners upgrading a turntable shop next.
- Turntable belts — worth replacing while the platter is off
- Cartridge alignment tools — a change in record height means re-checking geometry
- Stylus force gauges — the other measurement to re-take afterwards
- Turntable mats — the surface the record actually sits on
Frequently Asked Questions
How many do I need?
One. A turntable takes a single platter.
Which Rega turntables does it fit?
The Planar 3 and the Planar 6.
Will it change my setup?
Yes. At 16 millimeters it is thicker than the platter it replaces, so the record sits higher and vertical tracking angle changes. Re-set arm height, then re-check tracking force.
