PSB's Flagship Bookshelf, Sold One Speaker at a Time
The Synchrony B600 is the bookshelf model in PSB's flagship Synchrony series. A 1-inch titanium dome tweeter and a 6.5-inch woven carbon fiber woofer sit in a heavily braced cabinet with an aluminum front baffle. This listing is for one speaker, so order two for a stereo pair.
PSB spent two years developing the current Synchrony series, measuring in the anechoic chamber at Canada's National Research Council and using laser vibrometry and finite-element modeling on the cabinet. The B600 arrived in 2021 and has been reviewed by three US publications since.
The Drivers and the Cabinet
The woofer has a cast aluminum basket and a shorted-turn motor that PSB says lowers distortion. The tweeter sits below the woofer, and a fourth-order Linkwitz-Riley crossover joins them at 2,200 Hz. The front baffle is a 5-millimeter aluminum plate, and IsoAcoustics designed the four isolation feet underneath.
The Numbers, and What They Ask of You
PSB quotes 50 Hz to 20 kHz within 3 dB, with a minus 10 dB bass cutoff of 35 Hz. Anechoic sensitivity is 86 dB. The impedance is 6 ohms nominal with a 4 ohm minimum, and PSB recommends 15 to 150 watts per channel.
A 6 ohm speaker with a 4 ohm minimum wants an amplifier rated for 4 ohm loads. Fifty watts is a comfortable starting point, and the B600 will happily use 150. SoundStage! Hi-Fi measured bass in a small room that reached well below the published figure.
Size and Finish
Each cabinet measures 9 inches wide, 15.5 tall and 11.5 deep, and weighs 23 pounds. Finishes are satin walnut or high-gloss black, with a magnetic grille. Two pairs of five-way binding posts allow bi-wiring or bi-amping, and PSB makes a matching stand that mates with the isolation feet.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Diego Estan reviewed the B600 for SoundStage! Hi-Fi in November 2021: "The B600 is one of the most complete-sounding small speakers I've ever heard."
Chris Eberle of HomeTheaterHifi wrote in August 2021: "They play far beyond their physical presence and will transform your room into a different space." He rated the B600 Highly Recommended.
James Larson of Audioholics concluded in May 2023: "There aren't really any serious weaknesses with the PSB Synchrony B600 at all."
Who Is This Bookshelf Speaker Best For?
- You want a bookshelf speaker with no obvious weakness — three US reviewers over two years reached the same conclusion
- You want deep bass without a subwoofer — a 6.5-inch woofer and a 35 Hz cutoff are as deep as bookshelf speakers go
- You have a solid amplifier — 86 dB and a 4 ohm minimum reward 50 watts or more from a well-built integrated
- You care about the cabinet as much as the drivers — aluminum baffle, IsoAcoustics feet and furniture-grade walnut or gloss black
- You want most of the sound for less — the Imagine B50 uses a Synchrony-derived tweeter in a smaller cabinet, sold as a pair
How Do They Connect to Your System?
Speaker cable runs from your amplifier to the binding posts on the back of each speaker, red to red and black to black. Jumpers link the two pairs of posts for a single cable run. These are passive speakers, so nothing plugs into the wall.
Put the B600 on a stand with the tweeter near ear height, and leave several inches behind the cabinet for the rear port. The isolation feet grip the stand top, so the speaker sits without spikes or pads.
Pairs Well With
What completes the system. These are the categories most Synchrony B600 owners shop next.
- PSB Synchrony SST-24 stands — 24 inches tall, designed to mate with the B600's isolation feet
- Integrated amplifiers — choose one rated for 4 ohm loads with 50 watts or more
- PSB SubSeries BP8 subwoofer — for film, or for the last few hertz below 35
- Speaker cables — one run per side, or two for bi-wiring
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this listing for one speaker or a pair?
One speaker. Order two for a stereo pair, or one to add a center or surround channel to a Synchrony system. Check the title of this listing for the finish.
How much power do they need?
PSB recommends 15 to 150 watts per channel. Because the impedance dips to 4 ohms, choose an amplifier rated for 4 ohm speakers, and give it 50 watts or more.
Do I need a subwoofer?
Not for music. PSB quotes 50 Hz within 3 dB and a 35 Hz cutoff, and SoundStage! Hi-Fi measured deeper bass than that in a small room. For film, a subwoofer adds the bottom octave.
What do the isolation feet do?
IsoAcoustics designed them for PSB. They keep cabinet vibration from reaching the stand, and floor vibration from reaching the speaker. PSB credits them with clearer detail and more precise imaging.
How is the B600 different from the Imagine B50?
The B600 has a 6.5-inch woofer instead of 5.25, reaches 35 Hz, weighs twice as much and adds the aluminum baffle and isolation feet. The B50 is sold as a pair; the B600 is sold individually.
Where are they designed?
PSB designs and measures its speakers at Canada's National Research Council acoustics lab, where founder Paul Barton has worked since the 1970s.
