A Complete ELAC System for a Desk or a Small Room

The Debut ConneX DCB41 is ELAC's compact powered speaker system. The active cabinet holds two 50-watt Class D amplifiers, a phono preamp, a USB DAC, HDMI ARC, optical and aptX Bluetooth, and the passive cabinet connects with speaker cable. Each carries a 0.75-inch soft dome tweeter and a 4.5-inch polypropylene woofer.

ELAC's Debut line is its entry range. The ConneX adds the electronics, so a TV, a turntable and a computer all plug straight into the speakers. What Is Built In

HDMI ARC carries TV sound and lets the TV remote control the volume. USB takes a computer at up to 24-bit and 96 kHz. The phono input is switchable to line level, with a ground screw for the turntable. ELAC's XBass Enhancer adds low-end weight and can be switched off, and an infrared remote is included.

The Numbers, and What They Ask of You

ELAC quotes 66 Hz to 25 kHz anechoic and 50 Hz to 25 kHz in a room, with distortion at or below 0.2 percent. Each cabinet measures 5.5 inches wide, 9.6 tall and 8 deep. The active speaker weighs 7.6 pounds and the passive one 6.3, and the rear port is folded into an S shape to cut port noise.

Those are desk and small-room numbers, and the reviewers treated them that way. SoundStage! Simplifi used the DCB41 for desktop audio in a home office and in a basement family room, and What Hi-Fi? called the system neat and compact. A subwoofer output is there for the bass a 4.5-inch woofer cannot reach.

Power and Finish

The internal supply runs on 120 to 240 volts, so there is no external brick. Finishes on the store are walnut, orange, blue and black. Firmware updates load over USB. The active and passive speakers must be a pair, because the amplifiers for both live in one cabinet.
