A Three-Way Concentric Standmount, Not a Two-Way

The Uni-Fi Reference UBR62 is unusual for a bookshelf speaker: it is a true three-way. A 1-inch soft dome tweeter sits at the center of a 4-inch aluminum midrange cone, and a 6.5-inch aluminum woofer handles the bass below 260 Hz.

Andrew Jones designed it as the top of ELAC's Uni-Fi line. Both the concentric driver and the woofer use new cast chassis, the woofer cone is a single piece of compound-curvature aluminum, and the cabinet carries full perimeter bracing and dual-flared slot ports.

Why Concentric Matters

Putting the tweeter at the apex of the midrange means the two drivers radiate from the same point. The sound stays consistent as you move off axis, so the sweet spot is wide and the room has less influence.

ELAC quotes 41 Hz to 35 kHz, 85 dB sensitivity at 2.83 volts and a 6 ohm nominal impedance, with a maximum input of 140 watts. Crossovers sit at 260 Hz and 1,800 Hz. At 85 dB, these want a capable amplifier; think 60 watts or more with real current.

How Much Room It Takes

Each cabinet is 8.2 inches wide, 14.1 tall and 13.2 deep, and weighs 23.5 pounds. That depth and weight make them stand speakers, not shelf speakers. Bi-wire 5-way binding posts are fitted.

How Do They Connect to Your System?

Speaker cable runs from your amplifier to the bi-wire binding posts on each cabinet, red to red and black to black. Leave the jumpers in place for a single run. These are passive speakers, so there is nothing else to power or configure.

Nagle used 24-inch stands, which ELAC recommends. Give the cabinets room behind them, toe them in slightly, and allow a few weeks of playing before judging the bass.

How much amplifier do they need?

Sensitivity is 85 dB into 6 ohms and maximum input is 140 watts. We suggest 60 watts or more from an amplifier rated into 4 ohms. A small receiver will play them but will not show what they can do.

Can I bi-wire or bi-amp them?

Yes. The UBR62 has bi-wire 5-way binding posts. For a normal single run, leave the supplied jumpers in place.

Do I need a subwoofer?

Not for music. The UBR62 reaches 41 Hz, below the lowest note on a bass guitar. For film soundtracks a subwoofer adds the last octave.

What finishes are available?

What is different from the Uni-Fi 2.0?

The Reference version adds cast chassis to both drivers, a new woofer and concentric driver, more bracing, a revised crossover and the two-tone finishes. Sensitivity and impedance are similar, so the same amplifiers apply.
