The Last Word in Audio DACs

The Bryston BDA-1 is a State-of-the-Art external Stereo D to A converter using fully discrete analog Class-A proprietary Bryston analog circuits, two independent analog and digital linear power supplies and dual Crystal CS-4398 DACs.

Stereophile was so impressed with the BDA-1 that it honored the DAC with a 'Class A' listing in its coveted "Recommended Component" listing for 2010.

A very unique feature of the Bryston BDA-1 External DAC is the ability to disengage the upsampling feature. You can compare an upsampled signal with a non-upsampled signal simply by engaging a switch on the front panel. This feature is available on 44.1K, 88.2K, 48K, and 96K.

The Bryston BDA-1 was honored by being included in The Absolute Sound 2012 High-End Audio Buyer's Guide. According to the magazine, "The Bryston BDA-1 reveals previously unattainable (from digital) worlds of information about both the sound and the specific performance of the music. More that any other DAC AT has heard, the BDA-1 allows listeners to hear how instrumental lines relate to each other, how rhythms trade off, why the composer wrote the music as he did, and why each musician plays his line a particular way."

"Bryston is on a Roll"

"Bryston clearly is on a roll," notes Alan Taffel in the June/July 2009 issue of The Absolute Sound magazine, which honored the BDA-1 with its coveted Golden Ear Award for superior performance. "The BDA-1... represents yet another great audio value from Canada. More importantly, this DAC epitomizes Bryston's commitment to getting the music right."

The BDA-1 also won the "Digital Separates Product of the Year Award" for 2009 in the The Absolute Sound. According to the magazine, "This new DAC, based on Bryston's highly successful BCD-1 CD player, breaks new ground in its price range. It does this with a remarkable ability to resolve information in a musically coherent way, rather than by raw sonic analysis."

"Best-Sounding Digital Playback I've Ever Heard"

"The Bryston BDA-1 let me enjoy the best-sounding digital playback I've ever heard in my listening room," raves Larry Greenhill in Stereophile magazine, February 2010. "At the end of my listening sessions for the BDA-1, I put down my notebook and picked up my checkbook. I give the BDA-1 my heartfelt recommendation for the highest rating in Stereophile's 'Recommended Components.'"

"Tonal Purity, Detail, and 'Polish'"

"One tends to approach a piece of kit like this with high expectations, and we were encouraged to find them almost immediately fulfilled," reports Richard Black in the February 2009 issue of England's Hi-Fi Choice magazine. "In fact, we were really most impressed, not only with the general degree of tonal purity and detail exhibited, but also with the unusual degree of what, for want of a better word, we'll call 'polish' on the sound."

"An Excellent DAC"

"The BDA-1 is an excellent DAC and will produce great results provided your source (and source material) is good enough," observes the February 2009 issue of England's What Hi-Fi? magazine, which awards the Bryston its top rating of Five Stars. "What you get is a tonally neutral presentation of considerable insight and strong dynamics."

"Particularly Fine Rendition of Voices"

"It has admirably even-handed tonal characteristics with particularly fine rendition of voices, maintaining the delicate balance between vowels and consonants without sibilance, chestiness or any of the other all-too-common misdemeanours and it extends effortlessly to the frequency extremes," notes TechRadar.com.

"Solid Mastery of Digital Processing Procedures "

"With their BDA-1, the folks at Bryston have demonstrated their solid mastery of digital processing procedures," notes Cyr-Marc Debien in the February 2009 issue of Quebec's Sound and Image magazine. Before you purchase your next DAC, make sure that you think hard about what may possibly become the heart of your audio system. Then go and take a serious look at the Bryston BDA-1."

Debien admired the BDA-1 so much, Bryston reports that he bought the review unit to keep.

"Vast, Clean, Transparent and Harmonic"

"The Bryston is well worth the money," says the February 2009 issue of Germany's Hi-Fi & Record magazine. "This inconspicuous converter delivers from up to eight digital sources vast, clean, transparent and harmonic results which are even more stunning if the sources are of high resolution material."

"Be prepared to be startled by its dynamic prowess and bass power," notes Edgar Kramer in the June 2009 issue of Australian Hi-Fi magazine. "If you're in the market for a DAC, it's time to open your wallet!"

"So what do you get for your $1995?" asks Ken Wong in his June 2009 review for StereoMojo. "Clear pure tonal accuracy. Highly detailed treble. A large recessed soundstage which fills the rear corners. Eight digital inputs. Upsampling on the fly. Exceptional jitter reduction. And a touch of warmth… "

Inputs Galore, All Types

The BDA-1 provides inputs for SPDIF coaxial, optical, or AES EBU, plus a USB interface input. The 6 digital inputs, which are selected by a front panel switch. This digital signal contains data at over 1 million bits per second that requires a bandwidth of 5 to 10 million hertz (cycles per second). At these high frequencies it is very important to maintain the quality of the signal by having the correct termination at the digital inputs. The BDA-1 provides for this termination in the best possible manner using high quality devices call impedance matching transformers.

Impedance matching transformers provide the optimal interface to the incoming source under all sorts of signal conditions. Lesser quality terminations will degrade the signal, which will cause increased jitter.

Two Independent DACs

The two independent DAC chip's used in the BDA-1 are the Crystal CS-4398, which operates in one of three oversampling modes based on the input sample rate. Single-speed mode supports input sample rates up to 50 kHz and uses a 128x oversampling ratio. Double-speed mode supports input sample rates up to 100 kHz and uses an oversampling ratio of 64x. Quad-speed mode supports input sample rates up to 200 kHz and uses an oversampling ratio of 32x. This allows for filters, which are out of the audible range.

Audiophile Power Supply

The quality of power in an audiophile class piece of equipment is imperative to superb performance. The BDA-1 uses two independent power transformers for the initial stages of filtering and regulation. Each stage in the digital chain (s also independently regulated to prevent any interactions and to provide rock solid power supplies for any up-sampling/ over-sampling process. The DAC chip also requires a very clean digital power supply if it is to function at its optimum.

The DAC requires a high quality analog power source, too. The analog signal is at its lowest magnitude in and coming out of the DAC so any added noise or distortion will be greatly amplified by later stages. Again a separate, heavily regulated and filtered power supply with carefully routed grounds is provided. This sort of care with the power supplies is one of the reasons for the superior sound of BDA-1.

The most critical part of the circuit in the Bryston BDA-1 DAC is that the output from the D to A is directly connected to a pair of Bryston proprietary Class A Discrete Operational Amplifiers rather than the typical IC chips employed in most other products. This makes a huge difference in transparence, resolution and dynamic performance.

Discrete Class-A Analog Stage

Getting the Digital side of the equation correct is only the start. Once the signal leaves the DAC it is buffered and increased in strength by operational amplifiers. In the Bryston BDA-1 these are constructed from discrete devices (individual transistors, resistors, and capacitors) instead of the commonly used integrated circuits. The use of discrete devices allows the design of a circuit that exactly matches the needs of the DAC. They also allow for more powerful outputs from operational amplifiers since the heat from the output driver transistors is separated from other devices.

Hand-Assembled With Care

Bryston hand assembles and individually tests each and every product we manufacture. Its traditional adherence to the use of proprietary parts, sophisticated construction, and refined testing techniques, guarantees that your Bryston BDA-1 DAC will perform superbly, without any problems, for many, many years.

The final arbiter of this exercise is to provide products that are as transparent and accurate a window on the performance as the current technology allows. The BDA-1 DAC captures this transparency without compromise.

"Digital Separates Product of the Year Award" 2009 - The Absolute Sound Magazine

"This new DAC, based on Bryston's highly successful BCD-1 CD player, breaks new ground in its price range. It does this with a remarkable ability to resolve information in a musically coherent way, rather than by raw sonic analysis. The way instrumental lines relate to each other, how rhythms trade off, why the composer wrote the music as he did, and why each musician plays his line a particular way are all beautifully laid out by the BDA-1. Significantly, the BDA-1 requires no 'decoding' by the listener to appreciate these qualities. Rather, the Bryston effortlessly makes these musical values evident."

- The Absolute Sound, 2009 Awards Issue

"Golden Ear Award" 2009 - The Absolute Sound Magazine

"Bryston clearly is on a roll... The BDA-1... represents yet another great audio value from Canada. More importantly, this DAC epitomizes Bryston's commitment to getting the music right."

- Alan Taffel, The Absolute Sound, June/July 2009

"The Bryston BDA-1 let me enjoy the best-sounding digital playback I've ever heard in my listening room, outshining even Bryston's own BCD-1 CD player. This might be related to the fact that the BDA-1 has two Crystal CS4398s vs the BCD-1's single chip."

"The Bryston BDA-1 has become an essential part of my listening expe- rience. Mated to my Quad ESL-989 loudspeakers and used with Bel Canto's USB Link 24/96, the BDA-1 let me enjoy hi-rez files downloaded from the Internet, producing open highs, de- tailed imaging, deep soundstaging, and well-defined and authoritative bass that connected me to those crucial elements of music: pace, rhythm, and emotion."

"And, yes, the BDA-1 also let me enjoy a higher level of musical dimensionality and realism. As Bob Reina did when he added the Audio Research Reference 110 amplifier to his reference system, at the end of my listening sessions for the BDA-1, I put down my notebook and picked up my checkbook. I give the BDA-1 my heartfelt recommendation for the highest rating in Stereophile's 'Recommended Components.'"

- Larry Greenhill, Stereophile, February 2010

"One tends to approach a piece of kit like this with high expectations, and we were encouraged to find them almost immediately fulfilled."

"In fact, we were really most impressed, not only with the general degree of tonal purity and detail exhibited, but also with the unusual degree of what, for want of a better word, we'll call 'polish' on the sound."

"There is a legitimate question over the value of any expensive DAC (or CD player, really) when devices such as the Cambridge DacMagic at one-tenth the price can achieve remarkably good results. It would be ridiculous to claim that the BDA-1 is ten times as good, but if you are not afraid of the good old Law of Diminishing Returns there is certainly a rewarding step-up in quality from even the best budget units in a fine component like this."

"As with so many things in life, the finest and rarest come at a price, but we thing the arguments the BDA-1 makes for itself are exceptionally convincing."

- Richard Black, Hi-Fi Choice, February 2009

Five Stars

"The BDA-1 is an excellent DAC and will produce great results provided your source (and source material) is good enough."

"Build is as solid as you'd expect from a company like Bryston. Its products are born of the Pro-world where ruggedness and long life carry infinitely more weight than fancy looks."

"As far as DACs go, this is no stripped-down unit. It has eight inputs, a digital bypass, should you want to do any extra signal processing, and both balanced and unbalanced stereo outputs."

"Almost two grand for a plain metal box may not sound like a sensible exchange, but if you love music, have a tired-sounding CD player or a large music collection on a hard drive, the BDA-1 is a great buy."

- What Hi-Fi?, February 2009

"Upsampled high bit rate lossy MP3s offered an improvement though the BDA-1, as did many CDs. High resolution digital of course sounds considerably better than any CD or MP3 no matter how up-sampled but we all have some low resolution music so it is good to know this DAC makes the best of them sound very good."

"I recommend the Bryston BDA-1 DAC for your high resolution music files if you use the upsampling feature as at every sample rate the string tone is smoother and there is considerably more ambiance up-sampled. Also if you have very high resolution music files, such as 176.4K and 192K confirm that your computer will output these rates first and if you already have a Firewire to AES Interface this may be the DAC you are looking for…"

- Teresa Goodwin, Positive Feedback Online, Issue 49

"So what do you get for your $1995? Clear pure tonal accuracy. Highly detailed treble. A large recessed soundstage which fills the rear corners. 8 digital inputs. Upsampling on the fly. Exceptional jitter reduction. And a touch of warmth that a well executed discrete class A output stage can deliver. In this price range, it is a must audition for those looking to upgrade their existing digital player whether it be a stand alone CD player or computer based."

- Ken Wong, StereoMojo, June 2009

"During my considerable time with Bryston's BDA-1 I put it through a myriad of music challenges, and it impressed on every one. Externally, it's a simple design that nevertheless provides comprehensive connecting options. Internally, it showcases Bryston's engineering and superb technical ability."

"Musically, the BDA-1 resolves dense mixes in a way that maintains the integrity of the music. Its smooth midrange and treble performance allow long non-fatiguing listening sessions, but the BDA-1 does not compromise detail, dynamics and immediacy in doing so. In fact, be prepared to also be startled by its dynamic prowess and bass power. If you're in the market for a DAC, it's time to open your wallet!"

- Edgar Kramer, Australian Hi-Fi magazine, June 2009

"The BDA-1 is incisive, clean and detailed. In the cello passage you can distinctly hear two of the three breaths that the cellist takes (there are three … keep reading)."

"You can appreciate the DBA-1's remarkable control over bass frequencies .. no fuzziness. Each instrument remains distinct without creating a feeling that all is analytic and cold."

"With their BDA-1, the folks at Bryston have demonstrated their solid mastery of digital processing procedures. This unit has its place at the heart of every system which places a high value on transparency. This exceptional transparency from the BDA-1 let me perform all my tests (even if they're not exhaustive) and also discern both the subtle and the not-so-subtle differences in the sources or digital files."

"Before you purchase your next DAC, make sure that you think hard about what may possibly become the heart of your audio system. Then go and take a serious look at the Bryston BDA-1.

- Cyr-Marc Debien, Quebec's Sound and Image magazine, February 2009

Note: Debien admired the BDA-1 so much, Bryston reports that he bought the review unit to keep.

"The Bryston is well worth the money. This inconspicuous converter delivers from up to eight digital sources vast, clean, transparent and harmonic results which are even more stunning if the sources are of high resolution material."

"The Bryston is not a flatterer who sings like Orpheus and makes even stones melt. No, it acts with Swiss precision. It expands the soundstage, which now moves much further back and out and makes instruments highly palatable."

"Soloists have a shocking presence. This is because of the BDA-1's dynamic expansion, which compared to many other players- places the instruments perfectly in the soundscape."

"With the BDA-1's ability to uncover the details it calls our attention to another aspect: the background. One example: on Kenny Drew's unbelievably tight ''Undercurrent' (recorded in 1960) the drum hits a beat behind the saxophone on the right side. Some D/A converters only show a narrow soundstage here. The BDA adds space and resolves the rhythmic nuances. The Bryston really makes the inner detail of a recording audible."

- Saubermann, Germany's Hi-Fi & Record magazine, February 2009

"1. Channel separation is excellent, with the BDA-1 returning a best result of 141 dB at 1 kHz, while the result of 113 dB at 20 kHz is one of the best I have seen at such a high frequency.

"2. The Bryston's overall signal-to-noise ratio was also excellent, with Newport Test Labs measuring 116 dB A-weighted. This, too, is one of the best results I've ever seen from a DAC.

"3. One reason for these low noise levels is evident on the spectrograms, where the noise floor continues flat right down to 0Hz, with no evidence of any mains noise creeping into the circuitry. Also, the noise floor is sitting down at -130 dB, which is a fabulous result! No wonder that overall THD+N was tested at 0.007%.

"4. As for linearity, the figures tabulated in the table speak for themselves, with the Bryston delivering only imperceptibly small errors all the way down to the measurement signal limit of -90.31 dB. Distortion performance at these low signal levels is excellent... Without dither, the BDA-1's noise floor is lower than -140 dB. Adding dither to the test signal sees the noise floor increase to -130 dB, but as expected, the distortion visible in Graph 3 disappears entirely.

"5. Output from the unbalanced outputs was around 2.3 volts, and the balance between the left and right outputs was within 0.01dB, which is terrific."

- Australian Hi-fi Magazine

How are components selected and installed in a Bryston product?

Starting with a bare circuit board each component is hand selected and installed, every wire is cut and bent by hand, every connection is hand soldered. Although Bryston could do the job much faster by employing wave-soldering machines typically used in large assembly operations, that would mean exposing the entire board to a molten-metal bath. This is a source of extreme heat shock that could result in long-term reliability problems. Bryston's focus on excellence just doesn't allow for these kinds of short-cuts.

How many hours does it take to build a Bryston product?

The skilled technicians that build Bryston products are not pressured by schedules or quotas. On average, it takes 30-35 person hours to assemble a single Bryston amplifier or preamplifier. The company believes in quality, not quantity.

What kind of product testing does Bryston do?

Frequent inspection and extensive testing are a critically important part of the Bryston assembly process.

Individual components, completed circuit-boards, sub-assemblies and final assemblies are all put through rigorous inspection and testing procedures. Are the soldering joints all clean? Is every component aligned properly? Is the internal wiring laid-out symmetrically and neatly? During every stage of production, quality and performance are checked - and rechecked - against exacting tolerances and specifications.

At the point of final assembly, many manufactures immediately pack their amplifiers into boxes for shipment. However, at Bryston, each of the fully assembled products is connected to what the company calls a "burn-in table." For example, during 100 hours of continuous testing, Bryston amplifiers are monitored through a range of input cycles and thermal stress levels to duplicate a broad spectrum of operational loads. If any failures occur, the company catches them here, before you begin using our product.

Then, and only then, are Bryston products sent to the final quality inspection area for a comprehensive and carefully documented test of all their functions. The printed results of this computer-aided analysis are actually shipped with each unit. During this intensive procedure, Bryston rejects any product that falls outside of advertised specifications, or an even narrower band of specifications used for internal testing. As a result, you can expect each Bryston product to perform as least twice as well as the advertised specifications.

What kind of manufacturer's warranty do Bryston products have?

The Bryston manufacturer's warranty is unprecedented in the consumer electronics market.

Bryston analog audio circuits are warranted to be free from manufacturing defects for twenty (20) years from the original date of manufacture. The warranty includes parts and labor.

Bryston Digital circuits and cables are warranted for five years from the original date of manufacture. The warranty includes parts and labor.

Bryston products having motorized moving parts, excluding motorized volume controls, are warranted for three years from the original date of manufacture. The warranty includes parts and labor.

In the event of a defect or malfunction, contact Bryston's repair centers for return authorization.

Almost perfect
Love mine but am hugely inconvenienced by the outdated USB input which is limited to 48k. Even at this resolution Stereophile mag wasnt pleased with USB performance. Ive heard rumors of an upgrade/update coming.

really good, and worth the price
I own and just did an A/B/C/D comparison between my Musical Fidelity VDAC, PS Audio DL-III, and my Bryston BDA-1 vs the built in DAC in a couple sources. The VDAC sounded great and was an obvious improvement in quality over the onboard DACs...until I tried the DLIII...which sounded better yet until I tried the BDA-1 which really brought a new level of magic. The BDA-1 isnt perfect, its a little reticent at the upper frequencies my wife said it was a bit reserved or polite. That remained true when I redid the A/B/C/D test via several systems; an SET with several nice speakers, a SS can amp and Sennheiser 580s, etc. Roughly, the sound matched the pricepoint as it should, but seldom does in this biz. The DLIII sounded much less harsh than the VDAC; definitely better but it does cost 2-3x more. The improvement in switching from the DLIII to the BDA-1 was much more subtle with a tremendous delicacy, space around the notes, further refinement in timbre but incredibly clear and actually worth the $$. The BDA is more revealing and easier on the ears than any of the others I have tried. Im keeping all three; VDAC for the Audio Engine pc speakers, DL-III for living room, BDA for my listening rig. They are each good at their price point. But dont underspend on the DAC to get expensive but only marginally nicer amp or speakers. I think its one of the most critical pieces to get right.

Exceptional DAC!!!
I just upgraded from the Bel Canto eOne DAC3 to the Bryston BDA1. After about 100 hours of play for the Bryston, I compared it with the 3 year old Bel Canto. I find the Bryston to be clearly superior in bass and the overall sound quality. The Bel Canto is very good but a bit analytical. The Bryston is more musical. The Bryston is also more convenient for integrating into a system. It has far more inputs plus its remote gives you the capability to issue discrete commands to change input which means you can automate your remote control options. I am exceptionally pleased with the BDA1 and give it an absolutely superb rating and highest recommendation. THANKS AudioAdvisor!

One of the most polite DACs Ive heard
I have owned lots of DACs but was on a quest for modern one that got me close to LP/analog sound... while preserving the dynamic and dark noise floor of digital. My favorites have been from ARC but this DAC takes a the lead, and at 40% of the cost. I just played it side by side with the Benchmark and the Ayre; and this one has the sweet analog mojo; very musical, very smooth, very easy to live with.

Excellent Product
- Extensive A/B Testing has been done comparing the Bryston to the DAC in my preamp, CD player and my bluray. The only device that was even close to providing comparable performance is the DAC’s in the B&K. Initially the difference was subtle but still noticeable. After using the DAC for a few weeks the difference is now more pronounced. The best I can describe it is that the music just comes to life. Soundstage is lively, dimensional and silky smooth. When I switch back to the preamp … it is flat, grainy and narrow. In short it is an amazing DAC … it has a bit of a long break-in period but each night I turn it on … it sounds better and better. To get Audiophile access to your digitally stored music I highly recommend.

Great for Various Source Components
I ripped a song from a great CD in WAV format and loaded it onto a Memory Stick plugged into a laptop and connected to the BDA-1 via USB. At the same time, I played the original CD connected to the BDA-1 via the AES/EBU input. The difference between the two was so small, that no one could tell the two apart.
