"Reviewers' Choice" Award Winner - SoundStage!

Pure and Simple Performance

The Bryston BP-6 C-Series preamplifier is a simplified state-of-the-art preamplifier offering four high level stereo inputs. Bryston's BP-6 combines outstanding function with complete musical accuracy. It provides an exact duplication of the original recording experience, without distortion or coloration.

"The BP-6 Peeled Open the Soundstage"

"The Bryston BP-6 C-Series has done it again," reports Tim Shea in his November 2008 review for SoundStage! "It accurately portrays more meaningful detail of the recorded event and brings me significantly closer to it - or, rather, it closer to me."

Tim was so impressed with the BP-6, that he gave it the coveted SoundStage! "Reviewers' Choice" Award. "The clarity and resolution of the BP 6 C-Series fleshed out individual instruments and 'peeled open' the soundstage."

Fully Discrete Signal Circuitry

Bryston proprietary Class A Discrete Operational Amplifiers are used throughout the construction of the BP-6. All signal circuitry is fully discrete to avoid the compromises, phase shift and nonlinearities inherent in ICs. Controls are practical and convenient: source switching, tape monitoring, mute, balance and volume.

The BP-6 features four high level inputs. Output is provided by two pairs of single-ended RCA outs. A headphone output on the front panel allows for monitoring and private listening. A motor driven volume up / down hand held remote control is also available as an option if required.

No internal wiring is designed into Bryston's preamp circuitry. Components plug directly into boards, eliminating variations in signal travel and wire interaction. Volume controls are laser trimmed to within 1/4 dB accuracy for a firm image balance between the left and right channels.

Low output impedance and high current availability allow you to run long cables between the preamp and power amp without any loss of frequency response, so you can position your amp as close to your speakers as possible.

"Reviewers' Choice" Award Winner - SoundStage!

"In my listening notes, I wrote that the clarity and resolution of the BP 6 C-Series fleshed out individual instruments and 'peeled open' the soundstage, and that's exactly what it did."

"The sound was clear and organized, with less distortion and grit getting in the way."

"Turning up the volume with the BP 6 C-Series certainly made things louder, but it seemed to do it in three dimensions, much like you would hear at a live performance."

"I've been planning on purchasing power conditioning for my system for quite a while, because I know how big an improvement it can make across the board, and I promised myself that this would be my next purchase no matter what. I already broke that promise once when I ran into the Stereovox Colibri-R interconnects, which provided a lot of the benefits I hoped to achieve by adding a power conditioner in the first place: a quieter and clearer background, increased overall clarity, improved depiction of detail, and a more voluminous and dimensional soundstage - among others. My rationale was, hey, if I'm getting all these improvements without power conditioning, think how good this will sound when I finally do have clean power fueling my system."

"Well, the Bryston BP 6 C-Series has done it again for virtually the same reasons. It accurately portrays more meaningful detail of the recorded event and brings me significantly closer to it – or, rather, it closer to me. Were it in the family budget I would certainly add this preamplifier to my system right now and worry about power conditioning later, so dramatic and unmistakable are the improvements it brings. As with the picture on my new HDTV, I find the clean and clear HDHF sonic picture as portrayed through the Bryston BP 6 C-Series to be simply and irresistibly intoxicating."

- Tim Shea, SoundStage!, November 2008

How are components selected and installed in a Bryston product?

Starting with a bare circuit board each component is hand selected and installed, every wire is cut and bent by hand, every connection is hand soldered. Although Bryston could do the job much faster by employing wave-soldering machines typically used in large assembly operations, that would mean exposing the entire board to a molten-metal bath. This is a source of extreme heat shock that could result in long-term reliability problems. Bryston's focus on excellence just doesn't allow for these kinds of short-cuts.

How many hours does it take to build a Bryston product?

The skilled technicians that build Bryston products are not pressured by schedules or quotas. On average, it takes 30-35 person hours to assemble a single Bryston amplifier or preamplifier. The company believes in quality, not quantity.

What kind of product testing does Bryston do?

Frequent inspection and extensive testing are a critically important part of the Bryston assembly process.

Individual components, completed circuit-boards, sub-assemblies and final assemblies are all put through rigorous inspection and testing procedures. Are the soldering joints all clean? Is every component aligned properly? Is the internal wiring laid-out symmetrically and neatly? During every stage of production, quality and performance are checked - and rechecked - against exacting tolerances and specifications.

At the point of final assembly, many manufactures immediately pack their amplifiers into boxes for shipment. However, at Bryston, each of the fully assembled products is connected to what the company calls a "burn-in table." For example, during 100 hours of continuous testing, Bryston amplifiers are monitored through a range of input cycles and thermal stress levels to duplicate a broad spectrum of operational loads. If any failures occur, the company catches them here, before you begin using our product.

Then, and only then, are Bryston products sent to the final quality inspection area for a comprehensive and carefully documented test of all their functions. The printed results of this computer-aided analysis are actually shipped with each unit. During this intensive procedure, Bryston rejects any product that falls outside of advertised specifications, or an even narrower band of specifications used for internal testing. As a result, you can expect each Bryston product to perform as least twice as well as the advertised specifications.

What kind of manufacturer's warranty do Bryston products have?

The Bryston manufacturer's warranty is unprecedented in the consumer electronics market.

Bryston analog audio circuits are warranted to be free from manufacturing defects for twenty (20) years from the original date of manufacture. The warranty includes parts and labor.

Bryston Digital circuits and cables are warranted for five years from the original date of manufacture. The warranty includes parts and labor.

Bryston products having motorized moving parts, excluding motorized volume controls, are warranted for three years from the original date of manufacture. The warranty includes parts and labor.

In the event of a defect or malfunction, contact Bryston's repair centers for return authorization.

Wonderful sound for a little over $2K
I purchased the BP-6 to replace my beloved Melos SHA-Gold tube preamp. While not quite as smooth as the Melos, the BP-6 is clean, transparent and very musical for a non-tube preamp. Ive been listening to my sample for a month now and am very pleased with the sound overall. Female voices come alive with this preamp and the sound stage is very broad and natural. Easy to pick out different instruments and their placement. Percussion instruments sound quick and right there. Unlike most pre amps Ive auditioned over the years, the BP-6 just relays to the amp whatever signal you feed it with very little editorializing. When you turn up the volume, it just gets louder, rather than congested and flat. With plenty of inputs, a tape loop and two outputs, the device offers plenty of flexibility. The 20 year warranty also swayed me to purchase a Byston product. The biggest drawback by far is the cost of the optional remote. If the remote was less expensive, I would rate the unit 5 stars, but the high cost of the remote causes me to down rate the product. Perhaps Bryston could produce a more cost effective remote solution for their lower priced gear?

great $2k preamp
The unit is pretty stripped down, but has the right features to be flexible, with 2 pre-outs, and a tape loop. At only 8 pounds, you are paying for performance, not outrageous build quality. How does it sound? I have yet to put any material through that it has failed to satisfy. My taste in ‘band music’ is predominately progressive rock, which is generally pretty demanding of a system. I have heard music I have had for 30 years in their full glory for the first time. Almost everything I put on that is Italian is full of surprises. The unit gives a very musical sound. I have seen that a big part of that is ‘rhythm and pace’. A good check for this is the band Yes I had all but quit listening to them, because I found the sound ‘edgy.’. The song “Siberian Khatru” has always been a favorite of mine, but the last two minutes or so were grating. Not so with the BP-6. The end section is quite sweet, actually. The definition of highs is extended nicely. There are no glitches to the sound, as harshness, grain, etcetera, that I have noticed. Tone on all instruments I have found satisfactory. In classical music, I have heard 2 different voiced instruments horns playing together, and could hear them distinctly as separate voices. Human voices are at the same volume level relative to instruments as I heard through previous equipment, but the clarity and understanding of lyrics is much enhanced from my previous unit.. I don’t believe you can get this level of performance in any less expensive equipment. If this unit is in your price range, I believe you will be quite satisfied with this unit in your system. Definitely gives hi-end sound when coupled with Parasound Halo amp
