"You Can't Go Wrong" with This Preamp

Parasound's NewClassic Model 2100 is a versatile two-channel preamplifier that's equally expert with venerable and modern technology, from vinyl to MP3. A low-noise phono input provides the correct gain and load for both MM and MC cartridges. The Model 2100 also enables you to upgrade your present surround sound system for serious two-channel, audiophile-quality listening.

"The Parasound 2100 and 2250 [power amplifier] offer sound quality across the board so good, I would have thought you'd have to pay at least $3,000 to get it," reports Chris Groppi in his June 2008 review for Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity. "If you have $2K to spend on a preamp and amp, you can't go wrong with the Model 2100 and 2250."

"The NewClassics make a fine upgrade for those wanting to ditch their mass-market receivers and step in to the world of hi-fi separates," writes Clarke Robinson in his November 2007 review of the Parasound Model 2100 preamp and Model 2125 power amp for EnjoyTheMusic.com. "I am very easily excited by the music they produce. For that they get my recommendation."

Front-panel iPod / MP3 Input

The NewClassic's front-panel MP3 input makes connecting your iPod or other portable player really convenient. The Model 2100 even increases level automatically via a 12dB auto gain offset whenever you plug your portable MP3 player into the front panel jack to make sure it plays at the same volume as your other sources.

Left, Right, and Sub Bypass

Left, right, and sub bypass jacks make it simple to use the Model 2100 and your surround sound receiver in the same system, even if your system has a subwoofer and small left and right speakers. This great feature lets you keep the 2100 directly in the signal chain and play either stereo or surround sound without messing with wires. Automatic pass-through is activated as soon as you turn off the 2100. And bypass input can be selected via remote.

Built-in subwoofer control is another key feature. Parasound really thought of it all with the Model 2100. An adjustable subwoofer crossover provides analog bass management for your stereo sources, and you can adjust the subwoofer level on the front panel. Also included are separate output jacks for full range (large speakers), and 80 Hz high pass filtered (small speakers). This lets you push only frequencies about 80 Hz to your satellite speakers, without needing an expensive external crossover.

Switchable Phono Stage / Line Stage Input

The Parasound has seven inputs and a built-in phono stage. One input pair can be switched for MM or MC phono cartridge with correct input impedance. But if you're not a vinyl junkie, the input isn't wasted. Just flip the switch, and it becomes a line-level input. Needless to say, the built in phono stage sounds superb, but you would expect nothing less from the fuss-budgets at Parasound.

Custom Installation Features

The Model 2100 offers a 2-way RS-232 serial port connection for integration with Creston and other whole-house controllers. It also provides external IR repeater input and loop out jacks, as well as a remote control with discrete codes for Off and On. Two auto turn on modes (AC power, 12v trigger) add to the flexibility. And selecting automatic turn on / off defeats the front panel power button.

Other features include headphone jack with auto mute for line out jacks, a motor-driven analog volume control, a balance control, bass a treble controls with defeat button, wireless remote with tone control on / off button, and a detachable IEC AC cord. The Model 2100 uses a high-current power supply and accepts both 115v and 230v AC. Voltage is automatically selected.

Sounds good, fit and finish medicore for $650
My Yamaha C85 preamp finally died after 27 yrs. I read alot of great things about the Classic 2100 and purchased one. After unpacking and setting up in my system I noticed the following: the AC recepticle was loose, all the knobs on the front panel do not line up at 12 oclock when in center position, the input selector knob is loose, and the Parasound name is slanted on the face plate. The unit looks cheap, and feels cheap. Suprisingly, the sound is quite good - especially the phono stage. I wish the fit and finish would have been better. Most likely will not purchase Parasound again.

Perfect Integration!
Ive had this in my system since July 2010, and I couldnt be happier with its performance. It has ntegrated perfect with my Onkyo TX-NR906 and Emotiva XPA-2 set up, to deliver remarkable 2 channel from my Emotiva CD player and Music Hall 7.1 Turntable. I cant believe how open my records sound now, and volume is limitless! Like most preamps Ive dealt with, this seems very neutral in sound, and really lets recordings shine through good and bad. Dead silent sound floor... no hiss or circuit noises such as volume control interference. Be ready to tweak around with the sub crossover settings on the back, it took a couple weeks of listening to really dial it in. A must have if you use full-range towers in your main theater along with a beefy 2-channel amp - - and are longing for good stereo sound to let them shine!

Great product
Love this pre-amp. Traded in my 20 yr. old Carver gear for this item and a another power amp. It was an easy set up and honestly discovered new life in my CDs. Found my self listening to my collection with a new breath of detail, without being exhausting and depth of sound, for which I strongly recommend a sub-woofer, which is enhanced by the amps front control fine tune ability. I was only disappointed by the lack of lighted volumne control knob, to be able to view the exact position of the volume from across the room. Recommended

Lots to love about this preamp
The 2100 not only has a unique set of features in a preamp but also sounds excellent without breaking your budget. The lowpass sub crossover works wonderfully which makes this an excellent choice for a 2.1 setup. I did find the fixed 80Hz high pass preamp outputs to suffer sonically. Either the HP filter is much higher than 80Hz or something else is wrong because when using those outputs the sound from the speakers is lifeless and flat. I just utilize the full range preamp outputs to my amp and the sound is alive and well. If you are trying to have your HT setup pull double duty as a serious 2ch rig and you feel your processor does not do justice to the analog stereo inputs, the HT bypass feature on the 2100 is a nice way to integrate a dedicated stereo preamp into you setup. The remote is very simple, reliable and I love how smooth the volume control is. Discreet on/off and input buttons make using a universal remote a breeze as well. I have not tried the phono on it but I do like the fact you can switch it off and use it as another line level input.
