So Good, It "Borders on the Surreal"
If you're looking for a compact, cost effective speaker, but you don't want to compromise sound quality for space, the PSB Alpha B1 is the answer.
The PSB Alpha B1 was honored by being included in The Absolute Sound 2012 High-End Audio Buyer's Guide. According to the magazine, "One of the high-end's most venerated featherweights, the recently redesigned and curvaceous Alpha B1 combines mind-bending dynamics and rich mids in a speaker barely a root tall."
The December 2007 issue of Stereophile awarded the PSB Alpha B1 its "Budget Product of the Year" honors. "The PSB Alpha B1 is exactly the kind of product this hobby needs -- one that brings the High End down to earth, makes hi-fi attainable for just about everyone, and, beyond all, reminds us how much fun this hobby should be."
"Articulation and Extension"
The Absolute Sound magazine rated the PSB Alpha B1 as the "Best Stand-Mounted Speakers " in the Winter 08 / Spring 09 issue. "With a predominantly honest voice that strikes a judicious balance between articulation and extension, the B1's midbass has remarkable power and pitch."
"Mind-Bending Dynamics"
The October 2007 issue ofThe Absolute Sound magazine awarded the PSB Alpha B1 its "Editors' Choice" recommendation. "Yet another 'how-does-he-do-it?' loudspeaker from the prolific mind of Paul Barton. The new, more curvaceous Alpha combines mind-bending dynamics and rich mids in a speaker barely a foot tall."
"I can't remember the last time that a speaker weighing just under 10 pounds dripping wet made me want to listen to so much music," reports Neil Gader in the March 2007 issue of The Absolute Sound magazine. "At its humble price, the Alpha B1 is so much more than just a good little speaker - it's an achievement that borders on the surreal."
Is it "Craziness"?
"It might seem craziness to use a $279 / pair of speakers in a system costing more than 20 times as much," suggests John Atkinson in the May 2007 Stereophile. "The little PSB didn't disgrace itself in such exalted company, doing (within its dynamic limits) much of what I need from a speaker at any price… I very much enjoyed my time with this unassuming but attractive-looking speaker."
"Champagne Performance"
"The old and generally well-regarded PSB Alpha monitor gives way to the Alpha B1," observes Mark Fleischmann in the February 2007 issue of Home Theater magazine. "The new model offers greater detail than the old, while retaining the original's generous and musically adept soundstage. Altogether, you get a classic champagne-performance, beer-budget speaker system."
"PSB has succeeded in providing an excellent 5.1 system at a great price point. The speakers all blend very well together," writes Mark Smith in his review of a PSB Alpha system that includes the B1 for the December 2006 issue of Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity.
"Whether you're just starting out in hi-fi or building your second system, the Alpha B1s offer excellent value," observes S. Andrea Sundaram in his October 2006 review for SoundStage! online.
"There Should Be a Pair in Every Home"
The February 15, 2007 review for GoodSound by Philip Beaudette lists the Alpha B1 as a "GoodSound Great Buy." According to Beaudette, "The B1 offers across-the-board performance that compares to much more expensive speakers, offers much more than a hint of what Paul Barton’s best designs sound like, and is a continuation of PSB’s tradition of offering exceptional value for money. For what the B1 costs, there should be a pair in every home."
"Canada’s PSB continues to offer some terrific loudspeaker bargains," observes Mike Quinn in his Alpha B1 review JazzTimes for September 2006. "Chief designer Paul Barton is recognized for his uncanny ability to create astounding musical reproduction from speakers that might be priced much, much higher by other manufacturers."
Hand-built Drivers and Crossover
The Alpha B1 begins with a solid modular bass-reflex cabinet and loads it with PSB's newly designed, hand-built drivers and crossover network. The 5.25-inch injection molded metalized polypropylene cone woofer with damped rubber surround woofer paired with a single .75-inch ferrofluid-cooled tweeter creates a two-way design that is truly remarkable.
Match the Alpha B1 to one of our compact subwoofers to create a powerful soundstage and discover for yourself why the Alpha B1 is one of PSB's best selling speakers. It sounds superb, and it's just plain cool. A keyhole slot lets you wall-mount these beauties, and a 1/4-20 threaded brass insert is also included for ultra-rigid mounting.

The end result is an affordable speaker with a modern, yet simple look that has already received accolades from professional reviewers.
