The Absolute Sound "Best Turntable" 2008/2009

Truly Terrific Entry-Level 'Table

For over 30 years, the British company Rega has been the first name on everyone's lips when it comes to turntables. With the new P1, Rega quality is now available at the lowest price ever.

The new Rega P1 turntable is a dream come true for vinyl junkies who love the true to life sound of analog recordings.

"Musicality and Involvement"

The Absolute Sound magazine rated the Rega P1 as the "Best Turntable" in the Winter 08 / Spring 09 issue, praising it for "musicality and involvement that make analog special."

"Exceptional Value Award"

"The Rega P1 delivers a lot of music for $350," reports Jeff Dorgay in the No. 8, 2007 issue of Tone Audio magazine. "I nominate the Rega P1 for our first Exceptional Value Award for 2007. It's worth every penny…"

Rega has long been the watchword for top-quality phono gear, but no longer do you have to pay a premium for excellence. And if you're new to LPs and wonder what all the fuss is about, wonder no more. The P1 is the way to hop onboard and discover why records can sound better than CDs.

"If you are new to vinyl or the audio world and want to spin records on a budget, I can't imagine a better value than the P1," says Jeff Dorgay in Tone Audio.

The P1 turntable is Rega's first addition to its award-winning Planar series of turntables for some time. And it's definitely worth the wait. It includes a completely new, light and rigid one-piece aluminum RB100 tonearm. The Planar P1 also comes ready-fitted with a great sounding Ortofon OM5e moving magnet cartridge.

The high quality main bearing, sub-platter assembly and stabilized MDF platter deliver the precision speed stability that you need for convincing LP playback. The nicely designed 12-volt AC synchronous motor with belt drive ensures smooth, dependable control. And the P1 looks beautiful, too!

  • Belt-drive turntable
  • Rega RB100 tonearm
  • High quality main bearing
  • Composite subplatter assembly
  • Stabilized MDF platter
  • 12v AC synchronous motor with belt drive
  • Ortofon OM5e moving magnet cartridge
  • Rega sound quality at an unrivalled price

More than I expected
Buying the Rega Pl1 is a no brainer. That was an audio forum entry I read about a year ago. After a years research on entry level audiophile turntables, I settled on the Pl1. It is more than I expected - no plasticizing here but just rugged, well built quality that is giving me more than I counted on in terms of quality sound. It is very impressive in every respect. I had it up and running within a handful of minutes after it arrived. Pure simplicity with the quality where it really counts. After five decades of listening to vinyl on less than $100 tables my records have never sounded so good. It was a no brainer afterall. Money well spent!

The Rega P1 - all I wanted it to be and more!
Buying the Rega P1 is a nobrainer. Those are the words that one net forum contributor said about about this turntable, and those words kept coming back to me as I searched/researched data on an entry level audiophile table for much of a year. This is my 4th table in the last 50 years - the other 3 were the most bottom of the bottom tables in the $50 to $130 range. The table was always the low in my system, and I wanted to get into something that offered more substantial quality in technology and sound. I did research the entry level of Thorens, Music Hall, Pro-ject, and Denon, the Audio Technica PL 120 and the Technics 1200 series. I went through forum after forum, review after review gathering consumer praises and complaints about the various tables. It came down to the Pro-ject Debut III and the Rega P1. In most repects owners had the same ideas about how to upgrade these tables: go with a better platter and up the cartridge and stylus. The nobrainer quote won me over, and my decision was made. The table arrived over a week ago and was up and running within a few minutes: very easy to get going with a few tweaks of the counterweight and stylus pressure bias setting. The stock MDF platter ran very true. The Rega is plugged into the phono of my Marantz SR4021 stereo receiver. However, I was first very impressed with the quality of construction. This is not a cheap, flimsy, plasticized table. Its rugged. The dust cover fit on easily and stays in its up position when I want it to. The belt and cart/stylus will be very easy to change when its time, and to switch the belt for 45 play is simple. Theres also a lever to raise and lower the tonearm over a selected track and a lock for the arm when moving the unit. There is no vibration, hum, or other mechanical sound from the motor - totally silent! For the first few days I used the MDF platter. The sound was very decent - better than Id ever heard before. At the time of my order I also put in for the glass platter upgrade that comes with a better felt mat and which so many forum entries had strongly suggested. After a few days I switched to the glass. This ups the sound quality by many degrees and was well worth the extra money. The supplied Ortophon OM5e cartridge/stylus seems to be somewhat standard on several entry level tables and is doing its job very well. I also read a magazine review on this cart which gave it very high grades for a basic cart/stylus unit, and many consumers said they were very pleased with it as well. Some said they also bought it for other tables they own. In time I will up the cart to a better Ortophon as was reccomended in so many forum entries. In terms of upgrades thats all I intend to do or feel the need to do. Right now Im 100% satisfied! The table is doing exactly what I want it to do. My vinyl has never sounded better! Mission accomplished! No fuss with great sound. Ive no complaints. This is a great entry level investment, and I would do it again without hesitation.
