Onkyo A-50: A Full Hi-Fi System's Worth of Parts in One Chassis
The Onkyo A-50 Network Integrated Amplifier is part of Onkyo's Icon Series. It combines a Class AB power amplifier, a preamp, a DAC, a phono stage and a network streamer in one box.
Onkyo rates it at 110 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 180 watts into 4 ohms. It comes in Black or Silver.
Class AB Power With a Three-Stage Output
The amplifier uses a three-stage Inverted Darlington output stage, which Onkyo says drives high current with low distortion. Custom 10,000 µF capacitors and a copper bus bar feed it.
There is no cooling fan, so nothing whirs during quiet passages. An extruded aluminum heat sink and a 5 mm aluminum front panel help keep vibration down.
A 32-Bit DAC With Onkyo's DIDRC Circuit
Digital sources run through a 32-bit/768 kHz stereo DAC. Onkyo's patented DIDRC circuit sits in the DAC's analog filter and is designed to reduce high-frequency noise from digital sources.
Dirac Live Room Correction Built In
Dirac Live measures your room using the setup-mic input and corrects the response at your listening seat. A limited version is included, and the full version is available as a separate license.
How the A-50 Fits Your System
It drives speakers rated from 4 to 16 ohms, from bookshelf models to large floorstanders. Three pairs of RCA inputs and a moving magnet or moving coil phono input cover analog sources.
For digital, there is HDMI ARC for a TV, one coaxial input, two optical inputs and a USB-A port for music files on a storage drive. It streams over Wi-Fi or Ethernet and accepts Bluetooth with aptX HD.
Built-in services include Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Amazon Music, Qplay, TuneIn, AirPlay 2 and Chromecast. It is also Roon Ready, and the Onkyo Controller app runs it from your phone.
What it will not do: it has no balanced XLR inputs, and it is not rated for speakers below 4 ohms. It is a two-channel amplifier, not a surround receiver.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Ed Selley, The EAR (April 2026): "This is a truly formidable offering and one that is likely to be tricky to beat."
Gene Hopstetter, Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity (July 2026): "The first words that came to mind when I was listening to the Onkyo were "authoritative" and "effortless."" He summed it up: "And its gorgeous sound matches its gorgeous looks."
Who Is This Integrated Amplifier Best For?
- Vinyl listeners — the built-in phono stage handles both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges.
- Streamers — Roon Ready, AirPlay 2, Chromecast and the major Connect services are built in, with no extra box.
- TV and music in one system — HDMI ARC brings your TV's sound through your stereo speakers.
- Rooms that sound uneven — Dirac Live corrects the response for your room and seat.
- Not for — anyone who needs balanced XLR inputs or surround sound.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
- Connect your left and right speakers to the speaker terminals.
- Plug in your sources: turntable to the phono input, CD player or other analog gear to the RCA inputs, and your TV to HDMI ARC.
- Join it to your network by Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then set it up in the Onkyo Controller app.
- Run Dirac Live room correction using the setup-mic input.
The A-50 comes in Black or Silver.
Pairs Well With
Build the rest of your system around the A-50:
- Bookshelf speakers — for smaller rooms and desktop systems.
- Floorstanding speakers — 180 watts into 4 ohms gives larger speakers plenty to work with.
- Turntables — plug straight into the MM/MC phono input.
- Speaker cables — to connect it all.
