What a soundbar is good for — and what it's not

A soundbar is a tool built for a specific job. Used for that job, it's excellent. Asked to do a different job, it struggles — and no amount of money changes the physics. Here's the straight version.

✔ Movies and TV. Clear dialogue, real impact, and a huge step up from the thin speakers built into any television.

✔ Keeping the room clean. One slim box under the TV, one HDMI cable. No speaker stands, no wires across the floor.

✔ Everyday music. The three soundbars below stream over Wi-Fi at full quality — background music, dinner music, and casual listening all sound genuinely good.

✔ Growing later. Add a wireless subwoofer for deeper bass, or wireless rear speakers for true surround, one piece at a time.

— True stereo separation. Speakers a few inches apart in one cabinet can’t spread a band across the room the way two speakers six feet apart can. That’s physics, not a flaw to fix with a pricier model.

— Serious, sit-down music listening. If music — not movies — is the main event, a real stereo at the same price will beat any soundbar. Every time.

— Deep bass on its own. A slim cabinet can only move so much air. Big movie moments really want the matching wireless subwoofer.
