Where to put your speakers
Good sound is not just the speaker. Where you put it matters a lot — and getting it right is free.
Why it matters
Placement is free
You don't need to spend more money to get better sound. You just need to move your speakers to the right spot.
A few small changes can make a big difference. Let's do them one at a time.
Four easy steps
Set them up right
Pull them off the wall
Move each speaker 18 to 24 inches away from the wall. This keeps the bass clean.
Aim at your seat
Turn each speaker so it points at where you sit. Make a triangle with you and the two speakers.
Match ear height
Try to get the speakers level with your ears when you sit down. Use stands if you need to.
Give them space
Keep some room around each speaker. Don't squeeze them into a corner or behind a couch.
Move them a few inches at a time and listen. Stop when it sounds best to you.
Multi-column
Easy Mistakes
Watch out for these
Jammed in a corner. Corners make the bass too loud and muddy.
Flat against the wall. Most speakers need a little space behind them to sound their best.
Pointing straight ahead. If they don’t aim at you, the sound feels flat and off to the side.
