Clear Beyond Takes the Bigger-Is-Better Approach
A power cable carries the last few feet of AC from the wall into a component. It can't add power a component doesn't draw, but a poorly shielded one lets noise ride in on that current.
Cardas designed Clear Beyond to take current delivery and power filtration to the next level, taking what the company calls a bigger-is-better approach: larger 10 AWG conductors and Cardas's largest power filter, right at home on both front-end components and giant monoblock amplifiers.
Grade 1 Copper on a Golden Ratio Gauge
Cardas specifies Grade 1, 99.9999% pure oxygen-free tin-plated copper for Clear Beyond, with gauge sizes scaled to Golden Ratio proportions and a cross-field layer geometry, insulated in a PTFE jacket. The gauge runs 3x10 AWG for an outside diameter of 0.650 inches, or 16.51mm, noticeably heavier than Clear's 11.5 AWG.
Cardas says larger conductors deliver more power and its largest filter scrubs the power line clean, while remaining completely neutral and transparent, an approach it built to power both front-end components and large mono block amplifiers from a single cable.
Cardas E-5 Plugs, Hand-Terminated in Bandon, Oregon
Clear Beyond is double shielded with tin-plated copper and magnet wire, in a twisted triad mixed with PVC air tubes bound with FEP tape wrap, inside a super-flexible TPR outer jacket. Cardas solders and crimps its premium E-5 power plugs, with silver/rhodium-plated solid copper contacts, terminating every cable by hand in Bandon, Oregon.
The Connectors, Explained
Clear Beyond terminates in Cardas's E-5 power plug, hand-soldered and crimped with silver/rhodium-plated solid copper contacts, which plugs into the IEC inlet on your amplifier or component, and a standard NEMA 5-15 three-prong plug for the US wall outlet at the wall end.
What Reviewers Are Saying
HiFi+ named Cardas power cables an Editor's Choice in April 2024, calling the sound "a revelation" after living with them in a reference system.
Positive Feedback's Gregory Petan wrote in June 2022 that Cardas power delivered "open, stratospheric extension" in his listening notes.
Stereo Times's Dave Allison named Cardas power his number-two favorite power cable of the cables he tested in June 2023.
Who Is This Power Cable Best For?
- You are powering a large monoblock amplifier or a demanding front-end component — Cardas built Clear Beyond specifically for both ends of that range from one cable
- You already own a Clear and want the next step in conductor size — Clear Beyond moves from 11.5 AWG to a heavier 10 AWG, scaled to Golden Ratio proportions
- You want Cardas's hand-terminated E-5 plugs with silver/rhodium-plated contacts — every Clear Beyond cable is terminated by hand in Bandon, Oregon, to that standard
- You read the reviews above and want that combination of scale and neutrality — HiFi+, Positive Feedback and Stereo Times all praised Cardas power cables in this tier
- Your component draws light, steady current and Clear already covers it — Cardas Clear is the lower-priced cable one rung down
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Plug the E-5 end into the IEC inlet on the back of your amplifier, DAC or other component, and the male end into a wall outlet or power conditioner outlet.
Then power up the system as usual. Other and longer lengths available. Call for prices.
Pairs Well With
A power cable is one link in the chain from the wall to your gear. It usually joins these categories.
- Power Conditioners — filter the whole circuit; the cable feeds the last few feet after it
- Integrated Amplifiers — the high-current load most power cables are built to feed
- Stereo Amplifiers — another high-current destination for the heavier gauges in this range
- Digital-to-Analog Converters — a low-current source component that still benefits from clean, quiet AC
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does shielding matter on an AC cable?
Cardas builds its power cables to keep radio-frequency and electromagnetic noise from riding in on the AC line and reaching sensitive circuits. A ground wire without that shielding can act like an antenna, pulling in exactly the noise a power cable is supposed to keep out.
Is Clear Beyond only for amplifiers?
Cardas says the cable is right at home powering front-end components as well as giant mono block amplifiers, calling it completely neutral and transparent regardless of the load.
Do power cables wear out?
Every metal conductor oxidizes over time; it is unavoidable chemistry, not a defect. What varies is the rate. Denser, better-shielded conductors with quality plating oxidize far more slowly, so a well-made cable performs the same way for years instead of drifting.
Will this affect my system's ground safety?
No change to your safety ground. Every cable in this line keeps the full three-conductor path, hot, neutral and ground, exactly as building code requires. What differs from a stock cord is conductor quality and shielding, not the wiring topology.
Is there a step up?
Cardas Clear Beyond XL is the next rung, and the top of the Cardas power line. Cardas scaled up Clear Beyond's conductors, shielding and filtering, and extended the ground path to three times the cable's own length.
