Kimber Kable 8PR Speaker Cable
Kimber Kable 8PR is a braided speaker cable that Kimber calls a high current loudspeaker cable. Each leg combines eight strands of 19.5 AWG oxygen-free electrolytic copper, which Kimber rates at about 10 AWG per leg. The conductors sit in polyethylene dielectric, and the cable is black and red.
Kimber terminates every 8PR cable itself. Its own feature list for 8PR includes "Nitrogen assisted hand soldered termination". Each listing is named for the connector on each end, so check the title for the connector you want.
What Is Inside the Braid?
Kimber winds 16 strands of 19.5 AWG copper in what it calls a "16 wire counter opposed helix". It lists VariStrand copper conductors as a feature. Kimber describes the copper as having "industry leading conductivity", rated at 102% IACS.
How Much Resistance Does It Add?
Kimber publishes a dc loop resistance of 0.008 Ohm per meter for 8PR with standard termination. Kimber also notes a low series induction design. Resistance is only one measure, but it is a figure Kimber prints.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Gene DellaSala reviewed 8PR for Audioholics on May 19, 2009. He wrote that "the package as a whole is of excellent quality and design".
TechRadar compared speaker cables on September 19, 2007. It reported, "We found this Kimber cable the most involving, enjoyable, and musical here", and added that combining good tonality, detail and long-term listenability at this price is a smart trick.
Who Is This Speaker Cable Best For?
- You want about 10 AWG per leg — Kimber rates each leg of 8PR at about 10 AWG
- You want low loop resistance — Kimber publishes 0.008 Ohm per meter
- You want a cable terminated by its maker — Kimber terminates every 8PR cable
- You are cabling one speaker at a time — single listings are one cable, and pair listings are two
- Your speakers have two pairs of binding posts and you want a bi-wire cable — these listings are standard cables, not bi-wire, so look elsewhere for that
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Connect one end to your amplifier's speaker outputs and the other to your speaker's binding posts, red to red and black to black. Do the same for the second speaker.
The Measuring Mistake That Leaves You Inches Short
Speaker cable is cut for one room. Measure the path the cable will really take, around furniture and along the baseboard. Then add a little slack. As Cardas puts it, "A cable that's just long enough usually turns out to be just not long enough." Keep the left and right runs the same length, as Cardas recommends, even when one speaker sits closer.
Which Connector Holds Up Best Over the Years?
Spades clamp under a binding post and hold tight. Bananas push straight in, so they connect fastest. Bare wire fits almost anything, but we suggest avoiding it. Bare copper oxidizes quickly, and Cardas notes that copper oxide is not a good conductor. If you use bare wire, re-strip the ends when the copper darkens.
Kimber fits its standard 1/4-inch silver spade, which it calls SPADE, or its silver banana, which it calls SBAN. Kimber says the SBAN uses a nickel plated beryllium copper spring.
Tighten the connections, power up, and play something you know well.
When Is It Time to Upgrade?
Speaker cable often stays put for years. Look again when something else changes. Moving from bookshelf speakers to floorstanders is the big one. In our experience, about nine in ten people who make that move keep their old speaker cable. A stronger amplifier or darkened ends are other signs.
Pairs Well With
A speaker cable joins your amplifier to your speakers. These are the categories on either end of it.
- Floorstanding Speakers — the best time to rethink your speaker cable
- Bookshelf Speakers — the speaker end in a smaller room
- Integrated Amplifiers — the amplifier end in most stereo systems
- Stereo Amplifiers — the amplifier end when you run separates
Frequently Asked Questions
Who terminates this cable?
Kimber does. Kimber terminates all of its cables, and its feature list for 8PR includes nitrogen assisted hand soldered termination. The connectors are named in each listing’s title.
What gauge is 8PR?
Kimber lists 16 strands of 19.5 AWG copper, combined as eight strands per leg for about 10 AWG per leg.
Which connectors does it come with?
Kimber’s standard 1/4-inch silver spade (SPADE) or its silver banana (SBAN), as named in the listing title. Bare wire listings have no connector.
What is the difference between a pair and a single?
Kimber says a pair of speaker cables goes from an amplifier to a pair of speakers, and a single speaker cable goes from an amplifier to a single speaker.
Is there a warranty?
Kimber offers a lifetime warranty on all of its factory-terminated cables with proof of purchase from an authorized dealer. Audio Advisor is an authorized Kimber dealer.
