A Class A Icon, Faithfully Reborn
An integrated amplifier is the heart of a stereo system. It takes the signal from your sources — turntable, CD player, streamer, even your phone — and boosts it so your speakers can fill the room. One box holds the preamp and power amp, so setup stays simple.
The Musical Fidelity A1 is a faithful revival of the amplifier that helped put the brand on the map back in 1985. This 2023 reissue keeps the same circuit and classic look, in a slightly larger chassis that handles heat more safely and meets modern standards.
It delivers 25 watts per channel of pure Class A power into 8 ohms. When the music demands more current than Class A can supply, the circuit slides — never switches abruptly — into Class B, so the transition stays smooth and unnoticed.
Pure Analog, By Design
The A1 skips digital inputs, Bluetooth, and streaming entirely. That's deliberate: this is an all-analog design built around five stereo RCA line inputs and a built-in MM/MC phono stage with automatic impedance matching for moving-coil cartridges.
A "Direct" switch bypasses extra gain stages for the shortest, cleanest signal path from your source to your speakers. A motorized volume control and included remote handle everyday adjustments.
One more thing worth knowing: true to the original, the A1 runs hot. Its finned top plate is essentially a heatsink, so give it open space and don't set anything on top of it.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Herb Reichert of Stereophile called the phono stage the best he's heard in any integrated amplifier, praising its "enormous" soundspace and "bold and highly visual" presentation. What Hi-Fi? found the sound "bold, smooth and effortlessly musical," noting it favors emotional engagement over clinical detail.
Who Is This Amplifier Best For?
- You want the real Musical Fidelity Class A sound that helped define the brand, updated for modern reliability.
- You run efficient bookshelf speakers in a small-to-medium room — 25 watts of Class A power suits these well, not large or power-hungry speakers.
- You want a built-in MM/MC phono stage and an all-analog signal path, with no digital inputs to worry about.
- You have room to let it breathe — this amp runs hot by design, so it needs open space around it.
- If you want digital inputs, Bluetooth, or more power, Musical Fidelity's B1xi, M5xi, or M6xi may suit you better.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Five stereo RCA line inputs and one MM/MC phono input handle your analog sources, with automatic impedance matching for moving-coil cartridges.
There are no digital inputs and no Bluetooth — the A1 is built entirely around analog sources like a turntable, CD player, or preamp.
On the output side, you get a preamp output, a tape output, and a single pair of speaker binding posts, plus the included remote for volume control.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the A1 have a built-in phono stage?
Yes — a built-in MM/MC phono input handles most turntables directly, with automatic impedance matching for moving-coil cartridges.
Does it have Bluetooth or digital inputs?
No. The A1 is an all-analog design, with no Bluetooth, streaming, or digital inputs of any kind.
Why does this amp run so hot?
It operates in pure Class A, which runs hotter than other amplifier designs by nature. The top plate acts as a heatsink, so give it open space and avoid setting anything on top of it.
Can it drive large or power-hungry speakers?
Not ideally. At 25 watts per channel, it's best matched with efficient bookshelf speakers in a smaller room.
What does the "Direct" switch do?
It bypasses extra gain stages for a shorter, cleaner signal path from your source to your speakers.
What finish is available?
The A1 comes in black.
