Musical Fidelity's Entry Point Into Reference Turntable Design
The M6xTT brings Musical Fidelity's flagship M8xTT design philosophy down to a more affordable tier, tracing back to the early-2000s M1 turntable created by founder Antony Michaelson with Heinz Lichtenegger, once its distributor, now its owner. That original idea still holds: combine the inert mass of metal alloys with zero-resonating acrylic, decoupling the motor from the tonearm and platter entirely.
The M6xTT's 9-inch tonearm shares its low-resonance design with the M8xTT's, in a shorter tube with a streamlined headshell and a direct 5-pin DIN output. A transparent acrylic bearing ring and conical aluminum tonearm tube keep resonance to a minimum, and two TPE-damped counterweights are included to balance a wide range of cartridges.
This package ships without a cartridge, leaving that choice up to you. Electronic speed control switches between 33⅓ and 45rpm at the push of a button, driven by the same DC-generated AC motor control found in the pricier M8xTT.
Dual-Plinth Acrylic Construction, Refined From the Flagship
Two Acrylic Plinths, Decoupled by Design
Twin layers of zero-resonating acrylic are held apart by Teflon spacers and joined magnetically. The tonearm mounts to the upper plinth, the motor to the lower one. Isolation foam under the motor keeps its vibration from ever reaching the tonearm or platter through the shared structure.
Four TPE-damped aluminum feet support the whole assembly, each height-adjustable by turning its middle section — the same kind of careful isolation Musical Fidelity built into the original M1 two decades ago.
A DC-Generated Motor and a 14.5-Pound Platter
The motor runs on a precision DC-driven AC generator. Its frequency and voltage are built from scratch by the turntable's own control electronics, not pulled from your wall current. Push a button to switch between 33⅓ and 45rpm.
A one-piece belt, made without any gluing, connects the motor to a TPE-damped aluminum platter weighing a substantial 14.5 pounds — mass that helps keep speed steady once the platter is spinning.
What Reviewers Are Saying
"It strikes an elegant balance between excitement and poise that serves nearly every musical genre well," Hi-Fi Choice concluded after testing the M6xTT with an Ortofon Cadenza Blue cartridge. "A turntable that sounds every bit as classy as it looks."
SoundStage! Australia's Mark Busby, listening with a Kiseki Blue moving-coil cartridge, called the M6xTT "a very welcome addition to the vinyl replay world," concluding that it "balances elegance and playability" and is "highly recommended."
Who Is This Turntable Best For?
- You want the M8xTT's design philosophy at a friendlier price — the same dual-plinth, decoupled-motor concept, refined for the M6 line
- You want a tonearm built for a wide range of cartridges — VTA and azimuth adjustable, with two TPE-damped counterweights included
- You want push-button electronic speed switching — generated independently of your home's mains power quality
- Serious vibration isolation matters to your setup — dual acrylic plinths and TPE-damped feet work together to keep it quiet
- You want the cartridge to be your choice — the tonearm is ready for anything in our phono cartridges
How Does It Connect to Your System?
The M6xTT has no built-in phono preamp, and this package includes no cartridge. Two choices come first: an MM or MC cartridge for the tonearm, and a phono preamp with gain and loading matched to whichever you pick.
Once both are in place, the included semi-balanced phono interconnect cable (5-pin DIN to gold-plated RCA) runs from the tonearm to your amplifier or receiver's phono input, or to a separate outboard phono preamp.
Pairs Well With
Where the M6xTT goes from here:
- Phono cartridges — the adjustable tonearm and two included counterweights are ready for a wide range of MM and MC designs
- Phono preamplifiers — required for playback, matched in gain and loading to whichever cartridge you choose
- Integrated amplifiers — with a phono input suited to your cartridge type, or paired with a separate phono preamp
- Audio racks — a rigid, level shelf lets the dual-plinth isolation and TPE-damped feet do their job
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the M6xTT include a cartridge?
This package doesn't include one, so you can choose an MM or MC cartridge to match your system and budget.
Does it have a built-in phono preamp?
It needs an external phono preamp with gain and loading matched to whichever cartridge you install — there's no phono stage built in.
How do I change speeds?
Push a button. Electronic speed control switches between 33⅓ and 45rpm, generated by the turntable's own DC-driven AC motor control rather than your home's mains power.
Is a dust cover included?
A clear acrylic dust cover is available separately, not included in this package.
What cartridges will the tonearm accept?
A wide range, thanks to the two included TPE-damped counterweights sized for different cartridge weights, plus full VTA and azimuth adjustment.
How is the M6xTT related to the M8xTT?
It shares the M8xTT's dual-plinth, decoupled-motor design philosophy and DC-generated speed control, in a more affordable package with a shorter tonearm tube and streamlined headshell.
