Dual-Plinth Acrylic Turntable with New Tonearm, Heavyweight Platter, and Electronic Speed Control
The Musical Fidelity M8xTT set an extremely high standard for turntables to meet. And now comes the new dual-plinth M6xTT, which maintains the design philosophies of the legendary M1 turntable in Musical Fidelity's M6 product line.
The M1 design was created by Musical Fidelity founder Antony Michaelson and Heinz Lichtenegger - back then Musical Fidelity distributor and now brand owner.
The design of the M1 was very carefully considered. It had to match the style and quality of the mechanically stunning amplifiers. The main idea was to combine the inert mass of metal alloys with zero-resonating acrylic. The motor was effectively decoupled from the tonearm and platter with the dual chassis construction.
The M1 was a great success. And now, after the M8xTT, the new M6xTT is second in line to bring a more affordable version of this design philosophy to the market. The features set, performance, and build quality are extremely impressive at its price range and well beyond.
"Smaller and Lighter"
Reviewer John Darko at darko.audio summarizes the high points of the M6xTT in his December 12, 2024 preview.
"In the wake of Musical Fidelity’s M8xTT turntable comes the smaller and lighter M6xTT. The new model aims to bring the flagship’s design philosophy down to a more affordable price point. And that design philosophy starts with a twin-layer ‘zero resonating’ acrylic plinth kept apart by Teflon spacers, each directly connected to the four thermoplastic elastomer-damped aluminum feet below. The tonearm is fitted to the top layer and the motor to the bottom layer."
New 9" Tonearm with Conical Aluminum Tonearm Tube
The M6xTT's new 9" tonearm is the same design as in the M8xTT, but with a shorter tonearm tube, a streamlined headshell design, and a direct 5P DIN output for connection to a phono preamp, integrated amp with built-in phono stage, or other compatible gear.
The tonearm incorporates Musical Fidelity's ultra low resonance design with transparent acrylic bearing ring and conical aluminum tonearm tube. The tonearm is fully VTA and azimuth adjustable and comes with two counterweights to use it with a wide range of cartridges. The counterweights are TPE damped to prevent resonances.
The Motor and 14.5-Pound Platter
The motor is mounted on special isolation foam in the lower-level acrylic plinth to decouple it from the platter and the tonearm, so that no vibrations are able to enter the signal chain from the motor. The electronic speed control allows you to switch between 33-1/3 rpm and 45 rpm with the push of a button. This is the same sophisticated DC-driven, AC generator speed control technology found in the more expensive M8xTT.
The motor is powered by a precision DC-driven AC generator for the utmost in precision of speed and stability. This means the frequency and voltage for the motor are completely generated from scratch by our control electronics and you are not handicapped by the quality of your mains power when it comes to achieving perfect playback speeds.
A one-piece belt manufactured without any gluing smoothly connects the motor and the TPE damped platter. The platter is made of aluminum and weighs a hefty 14.5 pounds.
TPE-Damped Aluminum Feet
Four heavyweight TPE-damped aluminum feet provide excellent isolation. You can adjust the height by turning the middle part of the feet for leveling the turntable.
And speaking of isolation, magnetic supports connect the two acrylic plinths with Teflon spacers in between.
Necessary Accessories Included
Necessary accessories are thoughtfully included to maximize your enjoyment. A heavyweight solid aluminum puck stabilizes your records while playing to achieve the best possible tracking. The leather turntable mat provides a superior base for vinyl records, reducing noise and offering a special sound characteristic. To connect your M6xTT to your preamplifier, a semi-balanced phono interconnect cable with gold-plated connectors is also included.
Optional Dust Cover
To keep your turntable looking like new and to protect it from airborne dust and grime, an optional clear acrylic dustcover will be available separately.
