One Box, Nearly Every Source Covered
The Parasound Halo HINT 6 packs a power amp, preamp, DAC, and phono stage into a single chassis. Legendary designer John Curl's Class A/AB circuitry drives the amplifier section.
It delivers 160 watts per channel into 8 ohms. That climbs to 240 watts into 4 ohms. A 45-amp peak current reserve per channel keeps that power ready for sudden dynamic swings.
Total harmonic distortion stays under 0.01% at normal listening levels. A damping factor above 800 at 20Hz gives it tight, authoritative control over your speakers' woofers.
The HINT 6 comes in black or silver, so it can match either a modern or classic-looking rack.
A DAC and Phono Stage Worth Having Built In
An ESS Sabre32 Reference DAC chip handles digital duties. Over USB, it decodes PCM up to 384kHz/32-bit. It also handles native DSD64, DSD128, and DSD256.
Coaxial and optical inputs handle PCM up to 192kHz/24-bit. That covers a CD player, TV, or older digital source just as well as a modern streamer.
The built-in phono stage switches between moving magnet and moving coil cartridges. Moving-coil input impedance can also switch between 47k ohms and 100 ohms. That lets you match it to your specific cartridge.
A Texas Instruments TPA6120A chip powers the headphone output, rated to drive headphones up to 600 ohms. Bass and treble controls are on hand too, with a relay bypass to remove them from the signal path entirely.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Ken Micallef reviewed the HINT 6 for Stereophile on May 16, 2019. He wrote that it "worked well with every speaker I threw at it, delivering an upfront, slightly cool, dynamic sound, LP after LP."
His overall take: "even at its higher price of $2995, the Halo Hint 6 offers good value in true Swiss Army knife fashion."
Maxwell Geiger reviewed it for Audiophilia on October 25, 2022. He said "every note, delicate or forceful, seemed to have immense potential energy behind it."
He closed by calling it "as close to a universally recommendable amplifier as I've experienced."
Who Is This Amplifier Best For?
- Anyone who wants to simplify a system into one component. Amp, preamp, DAC, and phono stage all live in a single chassis.
- Vinyl listeners with a moving magnet or moving coil cartridge. The built-in phono stage covers both, with switchable MC loading.
- Streamers and computer-audio listeners. The onboard DAC handles high-resolution PCM and native DSD without an outboard box.
- Headphone listeners who want real power on tap. The TPA6120A headphone amp drives up to 600 ohms.
- Not the right fit if you already own separates you love. The HINT 6's value comes from consolidation, not from replacing a system that already works.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Five RCA line inputs and one balanced XLR input cover most sources. A front-panel aux input makes it easy to plug in a portable player. You won't need to reach around back.
Connect a turntable to the built-in phono input, wired for MM, MC, or moving-iron cartridges. USB, coaxial, and optical digital inputs connect a computer, streamer, or disc player to the internal DAC.
Balanced XLR and RCA preamp outputs, plus dedicated subwoofer outputs, let the HINT 6 anchor a larger system. A home theater bypass input routes a surround processor straight to the power amp. That skips its own volume and preamp stage entirely.
Pairs Well With
Building your system? Here are some great companions for the Parasound Halo HINT 6:
- Turntables to take advantage of the built-in MM/MC phono stage
- Floorstanding speakers to make full use of its power and damping factor
- Headphones to enjoy the onboard TPA6120A headphone amp
- Speaker cables to connect to its binding posts
- Audio racks to give it a stable, permanent home
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it work with a moving-coil cartridge?
Yes. The phono stage handles moving magnet, moving coil, and moving-iron cartridges, with switchable MC loading between 47k ohms and 100 ohms.
Can I stream high-resolution files through it?
Yes. The built-in ESS Sabre32 DAC decodes PCM up to 384kHz/32-bit over USB, along with native DSD64, DSD128, and DSD256.
Will it drive hard-to-power headphones?
Its TPA6120A headphone amp is rated to drive headphones up to 600 ohms, well beyond most consumer headphones' impedance.
Can it integrate with a home theater system?
Yes. A home theater bypass input lets a surround processor drive the HINT 6's power amp section directly, bypassing its own volume and preamp stage.
What's the warranty?
Parasound covers the Halo HINT 6 for five years, parts and labor.
