The Recessed Record Platter — A Retrofit for Earlier Record Doctor V Machines
A replacement record platter, sold singly, with a small mounting recess machined into it so an LP sits flatter while it is being cleaned. It is the platter fitted to later Record Doctor V machines, available separately as an upgrade for earlier ones.
The dividing line is specific: if you bought a Record Doctor V before January 1, 2015, your machine has the older flat platter and this is a genuine improvement rather than just a spare part.
Fit and Function
What the Recess Does
It gives the record label somewhere to sit. Without a recess, the raised label area holds the playing surface slightly off the platter, and a record that is not lying flat is harder to brush evenly and harder to seal against.
Which Machine It Fits
It fits the Record Doctor V. On a machine bought before January 2015 it is a retrofit; on a later one it is the replacement part for the platter already fitted.
The change is straightforward by design. The published instruction is simply to slip the existing platter up and off over the spindle, replace it with the new one, and carry on cleaning — no tools, no dismantling.
Who Is This Platter Best For?
- Your Record Doctor V predates January 2015 — that is the machine this was introduced to improve
- Your existing platter is worn or damaged — it is the replacement part either way
- You want records to lie flatter — the recess is there so the label does not lift the playing surface
- You want a five-minute upgrade — it lifts off over the spindle with no tools
- Your machine is a VI or an X — those are different machines with their own platters, in record cleaning accessories
How Do You Fit It?
Unplug the machine. Slip the existing platter up and off over the spindle, wipe down what is underneath while you have it open, and drop the new one into place. Check the record sits flat and the label sits down into the recess before you run a cycle.
Pairs Well With
What most owners keep alongside.
- Record cleaning solutions — the fluid the machine is there to remove
- Record cleaning accessories — the rest of the spares and consumables
- Record cleaning machines — if you are still choosing one
- Record brushes — for the dust that never needs a machine
Frequently Asked Questions
Will it fit my machine?
It fits the Record Doctor V. If yours was bought before January 1, 2015 it will have the older platter, which this replaces directly.
How many do I need?
One per machine, sold singly. It is a fitting rather than a consumable, so no spare is needed.
Do I need tools to change it?
None. The platter lifts up and off over the spindle and the new one drops on, which is why this works as a retrofit rather than a workshop job.
