A 2 Millimeter Three-Point Spacer in Black Aluminum, for the RB808 and Others
This is Rega's three-point arm spacer, sold each, in 2 millimeter black aluminum. It raises a three-point-mount Rega tonearm such as the RB808 at the base. Rega's own guidance: on a Rega turntable, spacers should not be necessary.
Arm height sets vertical tracking angle — the angle at which the stylus meets the groove. Records were cut at a nominal angle, and a stylus arriving at a different one is tracing the modulation from a slightly wrong perspective for the whole side.
Three-Point Mounting, and Two Reasons to Raise an Arm
Fit and Materials
The spacer is machined from black aluminum at 2 millimeters and follows the three-point mounting pattern the RB808 and its relatives use, rather than the single circular boss of the older arms. The two patterns are not interchangeable.
Rega gives two cases for fitting one. The first is a Rega arm on another maker's turntable, where plinth and platter heights differ. The second is subtler: a cartridge with a deeper body than a Rega's own may need the extra height simply to keep its rear clear of the record.
At 2 millimeters this is a step rather than a fine adjustment, and it lifts the whole arm. Work out the height you actually need before ordering, since correcting an overshoot means taking the arm off again.
Who Is This Spacer Best For?
- You run an RB808 or another three-point-mount Rega arm — this is the pattern those arms use
- You have fitted a Rega arm to a non-Rega turntable — the main case Rega describes
- Your cartridge body is deeper than a Rega's — the rear can foul the record without the extra height
- Your arm tube slopes down toward the platter — the visible sign that arm height is wrong
- Your arm uses the older circular mount — the RB250, RB300 and RB600 take a circular spacer instead, listed in turntable parts and add-ons
How Do You Fit It?
Fit the stylus guard before you start. Loosen the three mounting bolts and lift the arm clear of the board. Place the spacer so its three holes line up, refit the arm and tighten evenly rather than one bolt at a time. Re-check overhang, offset and tracking force afterwards.
Pairs Well With
What most owners fitting a tonearm part shop next.
- Cartridge alignment tools — anything that moves the cartridge means re-checking geometry
- Stylus force gauges — and re-setting tracking force afterwards
- Phono cartridges — the component all of this is in service of
- Test records — for hearing whether the change landed
Frequently Asked Questions
How many do I need?
One per arm in most cases. Each spacer adds 2 millimeters, so establish the height you need before ordering a second.
Which tonearms does it fit?
Rega arms using the three-point mounting pattern, the RB808 among them. Arms with the older single circular boss take the circular spacer instead.
Do I need one on a Rega turntable?
Rega says spacers should not be necessary on its own turntables, since arm and deck are designed together. The exception is a cartridge with a deeper body than Rega's own.
