120 Grams of Tungsten, for a Cartridge the Standard Weight Cannot Balance
This is Rega's heavy tungsten counterweight, sold each, at 120 grams. It is the option for a cartridge too heavy for the standard weight to balance — and like all tungsten weights, it carries that mass in a smaller body than steel would need.
A counterweight does two jobs at once. Its mass sets tracking force, and its position on the stub sets how much inertia the arm carries. Change the weight and you change both, which is why a counterweight is a component rather than a lump of metal.
More Mass, Still Compact
Fit and Materials
The weight is 120 grams in tungsten. Mass is the reason to choose it: a heavy cartridge shifts the arm's balance point forward, and beyond a certain cartridge weight a standard counterweight simply runs out of stub to slide along.
Because tungsten is far denser than steel, 120 grams here is a smaller object than 120 grams of steel would be. That keeps the mass close to the arm tube's centerline and leaves clearance behind the arm, which a heavy steel weight would not.
It fits Rega tonearms. Check the mass of your cartridge against what your arm's standard weight can balance before ordering — if the standard weight copes, the 100-gram tungsten version gives you the same density benefit without the extra mass.
Who Is This Counterweight Best For?
- Your cartridge is too heavy for the standard weight — 120 grams is there to balance what 100 cannot
- You have fitted a substantial moving coil — the usual reason a Rega arm runs out of adjustment
- You want the mass without the bulk — tungsten puts 120 grams in a smaller body than steel manages
- Clearance behind the arm is tight — a compact weight helps under a close-fitting dust cover
- Your standard weight balances the cartridge already — then the extra mass is unnecessary; the 100-gram tungsten is in turntable parts and add-ons
How Do You Fit It?
Slide the old counterweight off the stub and the new one on. Balance the arm level with the stylus guard fitted and the cueing lever down, then set tracking force from that zero. With a heavier weight the balance point sits further forward on the stub than you may be used to.
Pairs Well With
What most owners fitting a tonearm part shop next.
- Cartridge alignment tools — anything that moves the cartridge means re-checking geometry
- Stylus force gauges — and re-setting tracking force afterwards
- Phono cartridges — the component all of this is in service of
- Test records — for hearing whether the change landed
Frequently Asked Questions
How many do I need?
One. A tonearm takes a single counterweight.
How do I know if I need 120 grams rather than 100?
If your arm's standard counterweight will not balance the cartridge with the stub it has, you need more mass. If it balances comfortably, the lighter tungsten weight gives the same density advantage without the extra.
Why tungsten?
It is far denser than steel, so 120 grams occupies a smaller body. The mass sits closer to the arm's centerline and leaves more clearance behind it.
