Two Hundred Watts, and Almost Every Input You Own

The RA-1592MKII is Rotel's full-size Class AB integrated amplifier. It delivers 200 watts per channel continuously into 8 ohms, and 350 watts a channel into 4 ohms at maximum. Behind that sits a toroidal transformer Rotel winds in its own factory, feeding an array of slit-foil capacitors.

The connection count is the other half of the story. Balanced XLR inputs sit alongside the RCA line inputs. There is a moving-magnet phono stage, coaxial and optical digital inputs, and a PC-USB port for a computer.

The damping factor is 600 and distortion measures below 0.008%. Read together, those two numbers describe an amplifier built to grip a difficult speaker and stay clean while it does the gripping.

The Ethernet Port Is Not for Streaming

This matters enough to say plainly. The RA-1592MKII has an Ethernet port, RS232 and 12V triggers on the back. All three exist for control-system integration in a custom install. None of them plays music.

Wireless audio comes from Bluetooth, which supports aptX and AAC. For Tidal, Qobuz or a NAS library you add a streamer to one of the inputs. Andrew Robinson put it bluntly in his review: the Rotel "relies solely on Bluetooth."

What the Digital Section Accepts

Conversion runs through a Texas Instruments DAC good for 32-bit and 384kHz. The coaxial and optical inputs take SPDIF up to 24-bit 192kHz. PC-USB goes further, to 32-bit 384kHz in USB Audio Class 2, though that mode needs a driver installed on the computer first.

MQA and MQA Studio decode up to 24-bit 384kHz. The amplifier is also certified Roon Tested over PC-USB. Digital signal-to-noise measures 102dB and the digital frequency response runs 10Hz to 90kHz.

A front-panel USB socket takes an iPhone, iPad or iPod directly. The device stays awake while it plays, so you keep searching and skipping tracks from the phone in your hand rather than the amplifier.

Two Subwoofers, Two Speaker Pairs, and Tone Off by Default

There are two mono subwoofer outputs. They carry the left and right signals summed, and they run in parallel, so you can drive a pair of subs rather than one. A separate PRE OUT feeds a power amplifier at 1.9 volts.

Speaker terminals come in two sets, A and B, selected from the front panel or the remote. Worth knowing: plugging in headphones does not mute the speakers. Rotel's manual tells you to switch the speakers off with the A-B selector on the front instead.

The bass and treble controls ship disabled. Rotel bypasses them at the factory so the signal path stays as short as possible, and the display reads TONE DISABLED until you enable them in the menu yourself.

What Reviewers Are Saying

Andrew Everard reviewed it for Sound Advice in March 2022 and called it "big, bold and magnificent: this is an amp able to drive even big, demanding speakers as hard as most of us could ever sensibly want."

Andrew Robinson at Of Sound Design found the Rotel "effortlessly detailed and focused" and "the epitome of neutral with respect to its midrange performance." On imaging he was blunter: "my god is this integrated good when it comes to soundstage!"

Robinson names two practical gaps. He rates the Rotel as having "everything the modern audiophile needs save for maybe HDMI, which is a shame." He also notes the digital inputs are not equal, and that the highest bit rates arrive "through its USB inputs rather than its coax and optical ones."

How Does It Connect to Your System?

Speakers go to the A terminals, a second pair to B. A turntable goes to phono with its ground wire on the screw terminal beside it. CD players and other line sources fill the RCA inputs, and a balanced source takes the XLRs.

A computer connects over PC-USB, and a disc player or television over coaxial or optical. Subwoofers take the two mono outputs on the back. Headphones use the 3.5mm jack on the front panel.

If the amplifier joins a home theater, enable HT BYPASS in the setup menu. The 12V trigger then becomes an input, the amplifier powers itself on, and it selects your chosen bypass source at a fixed volume.
