A Complete Headphone System in One Beautiful Box
Most headphone rigs are a stack: streamer, DAC, amplifier, preamp, and the cables between them. The Naim Uniti Atom Headphone Edition replaces the whole stack. It's a high-end streaming DAC and headphone amplifier from one of Britain's most storied hi-fi makers, with every major music service built in and a gorgeous 5" color display showing what's playing.
Streaming covers essentially everything: Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Bluetooth, internet radio, and UPnP network playback, plus full Roon Ready certification. Files play at up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD128. The Focal & Naim app runs it all from your phone, or use the big rotary volume dial and display up close.
The headphone stage delivers 1.5 watts into 16 ohms through three outputs: balanced 4.4mm Pentaconn, balanced 4-pin XLR, and a 6.35mm jack. Naim designed it for headphones from 16 ohms up, covering everything from IEMs to demanding planars.
Naim Engineering, Aimed at Headphones
The Headphone Edition isn't a standard Uniti Atom with extra jacks. Naim removed the speaker amplification entirely and rebuilt the output stage around headphones, borrowing from its flagship Statement amplifier's design principles. The result, in What Hi-Fi's words, is a presentation that "opens up over the Atom," with "greater separation of instruments and extra space for even more superb levels of detail."
It also serves as a full system preamp: balanced XLR and RCA outputs feed powered speakers or a power amplifier, so the Atom HE can anchor a complete system, headphones by night, speakers by day. Inputs include analog RCA, two optical, and one coaxial, so a TV or CD transport connects easily.
What Reviewers Are Saying
What Hi-Fi awarded it five stars in a July 15, 2021 review, calling it "a unique but no less successful addition to Naim's Uniti range," where "the soundstage is broader and more refined, detail levels go up a notch, and rhythmically things are that bit tighter and more disciplined." Matty Graham of Headfonia, in a May 17, 2021 review scoring it 4.2 out of 5, wrote that it "puts you right into the music, with a believable and enjoyable sense of spatial cues," calling its headphone performance "absolutely terrific" and the unit "a stone-cold winner."
Who Is This System Best For?
- You want one box instead of a stack — streamer, DAC, headphone amp, and preamp in a single elegant chassis.
- You stream your music — Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify, AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Roon, and Bluetooth are all built in.
- You own balanced headphones — both 4.4mm Pentaconn and 4-pin XLR outputs are on the front panel.
- You want it to run speakers too — balanced preamp outputs feed powered speakers or a power amp.
- If you never stream and just need an amp for one wired source, the Atom HE's connectivity is wasted — a dedicated DAC/amp costs far less.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Connect it to your network over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and the app takes it from there. Headphones plug into the front's 4.4mm, 4-pin XLR, or 6.35mm outputs. A TV, CD transport, or other source connects through the optical, coaxial, or RCA inputs, and the XLR or RCA outputs feed powered speakers or an amplifier.
The 5" display shows album art and status, the signature illuminated volume dial handles level, and firmware updates arrive over the network to keep services current.
