What You Need to Know
What Is a Universal Source — and Why Does It Matter?
Most audio components do one thing: a CD player spins discs, a DAC converts digital files, a network streamer handles Spotify and Qobuz. If you want to do all of those things, you typically need three separate boxes, three sets of cables, and three power supplies cluttering your rack.
The Advance Paris X-Stream 9 takes a different approach. It’s what the hi-fi world calls a “universal source” — a single component designed to handle every source you’re likely to play. Stream from your favorite services, spin a CD, tune an FM or DAB radio station, or plug in a computer and play high-resolution files directly. The X-Stream 9 does all of it, from one tidy box.
Advance Paris is a French audio company with over 20 years of experience designing gear for serious music lovers. Their philosophy for the X-Stream 9 was “limitless” — no compromises on sources, and no compromise on sound quality regardless of which source you choose.
The DAC at Its Heart
At the center of the X-Stream 9 is a high-quality digital-to-analog converter, or DAC. A DAC is the component that takes a digital audio signal — the ones and zeros from a CD, a streaming service, or a music file — and turns them into an analog signal that your amplifier and speakers can actually use. The quality of the DAC has a big influence on how natural and detailed your music sounds.
Advance Paris built the X-Stream 9 around AKM’s AK4490 converter, a flagship 32-bit chip from Asahi Kasei Microdevices. The AK4490 is part of AKM’s VELVET SOUND architecture — a platform widely adopted by high-end audio manufacturers for its combination of very low distortion and natural sound character. Five built-in digital filters let you adjust how the DAC processes the signal, so you can tune the presentation to your preference and your system.
According to Advance Paris, the DAC delivers a signal-to-noise ratio of over 120 dB and distortion below 0.005%. In plain terms: the noise floor is extremely low, so quiet passages in your music stay genuinely quiet, and the distortion is low enough that what you hear is a faithful translation of the original recording.
The X-Stream 9 supports high-resolution audio up to 32-bit / 768 kHz PCM and DSD (up to 11.2 MHz via USB), which covers every current high-resolution format available from services like Qobuz or stored on your hard drive.
Network Streaming — Your Music Library, Wireless
The X-Stream 9’s built-in network player connects to your home Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n) or via Ethernet. Once on your network, it gives you access to streaming services including Spotify, Qobuz, and Tidal, plus thousands of internet radio stations. It also works with DLNA and AirPlay, so you can stream from a phone, tablet, or computer on the same network.
Spotify Connect support means you can use the Spotify app directly on your phone to control playback — the X-Stream 9 appears as a playback device in the app, just like a smart speaker would. The free Advance Playstream app (available on iOS and Android) gives you broader control over streaming services, internet radio, and your local music library.
If you have a music library stored on a NAS drive or shared folder on your home network, the X-Stream 9 can browse and play it over DLNA. No computer needs to be running; the player finds your files directly.
CD Player, FM/DAB Radio, and USB Computer Playback
Its built-in CD player uses Tamul servo technology — a precision disc-reading system that ensures stable, accurate playback even with CD-R and CD-RW discs. The mechanism pairs a 16-bit processor with a 24-bit DSP, and it supports standard CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs including discs burned with MP3 or WMA files.
The USB-B input uses an XMOS XU208-256 controller operating in asynchronous mode. “Asynchronous” means the X-Stream 9 controls the timing of the data coming from your computer rather than letting the computer control it. This eliminates a major source of jitter (timing errors that can smear or blur the sound). This input supports up to 32-bit / 768 kHz PCM and native DSD playback.
Who Is the X-Stream 9 Best For?
-
You want to simplify your system. If you currently have separate units for streaming, CD playback, and radio, the X-Stream 9 replaces all of them with a single, well-engineered component.
-
You still love your CD collection. Streaming is convenient, but many listeners prefer the sound of their own discs. The X-Stream 9 lets you do both without switching boxes.
-
You want to explore high-resolution audio. Whether it’s a Qobuz hi-res download, DSD files on a hard drive, or a hi-res stream, the X-Stream 9 handles it all natively.
-
You need balanced outputs. XLR balanced outputs are unusual at this price point and make the X-Stream 9 a strong match for preamplifiers with balanced inputs.
-
You value flexibility for the long term. With five digital inputs, the X-Stream 9 can also serve as the DAC for other digital sources you already own.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
The X-Stream 9 is a source component. You connect it to an integrated amplifier or preamplifier using the analog outputs: unbalanced RCA (2V) or balanced XLR (4V). Both are switchable between fixed and variable output. Digital outputs (optical and coaxial) let you route the signal to an outboard DAC if preferred.
For external digital sources, three optical (Toslink) inputs and two coaxial S/PDIF inputs accept a TV, second CD transport, or any other digital source. A 12V trigger input/output lets the X-Stream 9 power on and off automatically with a compatible amplifier.
Keep in mind: the X-Stream 9 is a source component. You’ll need a separate integrated amplifier or preamplifier and speakers to complete your system. Call us at 800-942-0220 if you need pairing help.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does “universal source” actually mean?
It means the X-Stream 9 replaces multiple separate components in one box. Instead of owning a standalone CD player, a network streamer, a DAC, and a radio tuner separately, you get all four in one unit. Everything routes through the same high-quality DAC and output stage, so you get consistent sound quality no matter which source you’re playing.
Do I need anything else to use this?
You’ll need a separate amplifier and speakers. Connect it to any integrated amplifier using the RCA or XLR outputs. If you’re not sure what to pair it with, call us at 800-942-0220.
Can I use this with Spotify, Qobuz, or Tidal?
Yes. The X-Stream 9 natively supports Spotify, Qobuz, Tidal, and Deezer through the Advance Playstream app (free, iOS and Android). Spotify Connect is also built in for direct control from the Spotify app without needing the Playstream app.
Does it support high-resolution audio?
Yes. The AKM AK4490 DAC supports PCM up to 32-bit / 768 kHz and DSD up to 11.2 MHz. High-resolution streams from Qobuz are fully supported. The USB-B input handles local hi-res files at the same resolutions.
Is Bluetooth built in?
Bluetooth is optional via the X-FTB 01 or X-FTB 02 module (sold separately), which plugs into the dedicated BDD port on the rear. The module uses aptX for near-CD-quality Bluetooth streaming. The X-Stream 9 works perfectly without it using Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or physical inputs.
Can I use this as a standalone DAC for my TV?
Yes. The three optical inputs and two coaxial inputs accept any digital source — a TV, games console, or second CD player. The X-Stream 9 converts the signal through its DAC and sends it to your amplifier.
Will it work with my NAS drive or home music library?
Yes. The X-Stream 9 supports DLNA and can browse and play music libraries stored on a NAS or shared folder on your home network. The Advance Playstream app is the easiest way to navigate your library.
How does it connect to my amplifier?
Via balanced XLR outputs (4V) or unbalanced RCA outputs (2V), both switchable between fixed and variable. Variable output lets you control volume from the X-Stream 9 itself, bypassing the amplifier’s volume control.
How does the X-Stream 9 compare to Advance Paris’s other source components?
The X-Stream 9 is the flagship universal source in the Classic Line. The X-CD9 is a CD-only player with a tube output stage; the X-D500 is a pure CD transport with no built-in DAC. If you want one box for everything, the X-Stream 9 is the answer.
