What You Need to Know
Why the Center Channel Speaker Matters Most
In a surround sound system, the center channel speaker carries more of the audio signal than any other speaker in the room. It handles nearly all dialogue, most lead vocals in music, and the critical front-stage action in movies. If your center channel is weak or mismatched, you’ll ride the volume control constantly trying to follow what characters are saying. When it’s right, dialogue is clear and effortless even at moderate listening levels, and the front soundstage feels wide and cohesive.
The Bowers & Wilkins HTM6 S3 is designed to be that center channel — the one that solves the dialogue problem once and for all, while matching the tonal quality and sonic character of the 600 Series S3 speaker family it was built to anchor.
The HTM6 S3 — What It Is
The HTM6 S3 is a 2-way, vented-box center channel speaker from Bowers & Wilkins, part of the 600 Series S3 range. It uses three drivers: one 25mm Titanium Dome tweeter flanked by two 130mm (5-inch) Continuum cone bass/midrange drivers. This configuration — a tweeter centered between two matching bass/midrange drivers — is sometimes called an MTM or D’Appolito arrangement, and it is specifically chosen for center channels because it widens the listening sweet spot. More people in the room can hear clear dialogue without sitting directly in front of the speaker.
Bowers & Wilkins launched the 600 Series S3 in 2023. It sits at the entry level of B&W’s speaker hierarchy — below the 700 Series and far below the flagship 800 Series — but the S3 update brought genuine technology trickle-down from those more expensive ranges into an accessible, compact package. The HTM6 S3 retails at $900.
Titanium Dome Tweeter — Trickle-Down from the 700 Series
The HTM6 S3’s most significant upgrade over its predecessor is the all-new Decoupled Double Dome Titanium tweeter. Titanium is a harder, lighter material than the aluminum domes used in many competing speakers at this price. A harder dome can be pushed to higher frequencies before it “breaks up” — meaning it deforms under the pressure of producing sound — and a lighter dome responds faster to sudden transients. The result is a tweeter that handles high frequencies with greater resolution and smoothness than an aluminum equivalent.
The “decoupled” aspect is important too. The tweeter is mechanically isolated from the cabinet using a tube-loading system. Cabinet vibrations — from the bass/midrange drivers working nearby — cannot travel through the cabinet walls and into the tweeter assembly. That isolation reduces distortion at the tweeter itself, which is one of the reasons the HTM6 S3 can render subtle vocal nuances that other center speakers miss.
The tweeter also features an acoustically transparent grille mesh first developed for Bowers & Wilkins’ Signature models. Rather than a conventional solid grille with perforations, this fine mesh minimizes the acoustic interference between the grille and the tweeter for cleaner high-frequency output.
Continuum Cone Bass/Midrange — Trickle-Down from the 800 Series
The Continuum cone is Bowers & Wilkins’ proprietary bass/midrange driver material, originally developed for their flagship 800 Series — speakers that cost many multiples of the 600 Series price. The Continuum cone is a woven composite material. Conventional speaker cones made from aluminum or basic polymer tend to have resonance modes — frequencies at which the cone material itself flexes or rings — that cause audible coloration in the sound.
The Continuum composite is engineered to avoid those abrupt resonance transitions. It stores and releases energy more smoothly, which translates to a more open, neutral midrange — the frequency range where voices and instruments live. The S3 update also brings a more powerful, lower-distortion motor assembly to the Continuum drivers, improving clarity and reducing coloration particularly in dense, complex program material.
For a center channel speaker, this matters enormously. Voices are reproduced in the midrange. A driver that adds coloration to that range will make dialogue sound unnatural, honky, or recessed. The Continuum cone minimizes those colorations, which is why the HTM6 S3 is praised for how naturally it renders the human voice.
Flowport — Bass Without Boom
The HTM6 S3 uses a rear-firing Flowport — Bowers & Wilkins’ dimpled bass port design. A standard bass port is a simple cylindrical tube. At high output levels, air turbulence at the port opening creates a chuffing noise that adds coloration to the bass. The Flowport’s dimpled internal surface reduces that turbulence, allowing the port to move more air quietly. The result is cleaner, more controlled bass extension that pairs well with a subwoofer in a typical 5.1 or 7.1 system.
Two foam port plugs are included. If the HTM6 S3 must be placed very close to a wall or inside a cabinet with limited rear clearance, the plugs reduce the bass port output to prevent excessive room boom. Not all center channel speakers include this — it is a practical, useful addition.
700 Series-Derived Terminals — Clean Signal Path
The HTM6 S3’s rear panel uses speaker terminals derived from the 700 Series range — an improved layout with a cleaner internal signal path compared to previous 600 Series designs. The terminals support bi-wire connections: two pairs of terminals per speaker, allowing you to run separate speaker cables for the high-frequency and low-frequency sections of the crossover. Bi-wiring can improve transparency and reduce interference between the two signal paths.
Three Finishes — Black, White, Oak
The HTM6 S3 is available in three finishes that match the rest of the 600 Series S3 range: Black, White, and Oak. All three finishes carry magnetic grilles (Black and Grey grille colors available) that snap on and off easily without visible attachment hardware. The Oak finish uses a light-colored baffle for a warmer, more traditional furniture appearance. The Black and White versions have a clean, contemporary look suited to modern home theater rooms.
Compact Enough to Fit Anywhere, Powerful Enough to Perform
At 160mm tall, 480mm wide, and 255mm deep (approximately 6.3” × 18.9” × 10”), the HTM6 S3 is compact enough to sit below most televisions without blocking the screen or dominating the room. It weighs 7.7 kg (17 lbs) — substantial enough to feel well-built, light enough to place on standard AV furniture without concern. Power handling is 30–120W at 8 ohms, compatible with the vast majority of AV receivers and surround sound amplifiers.
What the Experts Say
What Hi-Fi? tested the HTM6 S3 as part of a full 600 Series S3 surround package alongside the 606 S3 and 607 S3 speakers. They praised the overall package as “nothing short of spectacular in the sonic department,” noting they found themselves “grasping at straws when it comes to finding things to complain about.” The HTM6 S3 was described as a robust, compact center channel that contributes naturally to a cohesive, immersive front soundstage. The package built around it was rated among the strongest surround speaker options at its price.
AVForums reviewed the full 600 S3 home theater system with the HTM6 S3 at its center. They noted the HTM6 S3 uses the same Titanium tweeter as the flanking 603 S3 towers and confirmed its power handling of 30–120W at 8 ohms and an 87dB sensitivity. The reviewer described a system that delivered clear, engaging performance across music and movies, with excellent driver integration between the center channel and the main speakers — a key test of a center channel’s quality in a real home theater context.
Richer Sounds described the HTM6 S3 as delivering “crystal-clear dialogue” and noted that the Titanium tweeter “teases out vocal nuances that are easily missed with other centre speakers.” They highlighted the Continuum midrange driver as delivering “cleaner sound with less distortion so you can hear every word clearly even when the soundtrack is at full blast” — precisely the real-world test a center channel must pass.

Frequently Asked Questions
What speakers does the HTM6 S3 pair with best?
It is purpose-built to match the 600 Series S3 family — the 603 S3 floorstanders, 606 S3 standmounters, and 607 S3 bookshelf speakers. Bowers & Wilkins specifically positions it as “powerful enough to partner with the 603 S3” for larger rooms. For smaller rooms, the 606 S3 or 607 S3 as main speakers work beautifully. That said, the HTM6 S3 can also work in mixed-brand setups — its tonal character is neutral and it integrates well in many systems. Call us and we can advise on your specific situation.
Do I need a subwoofer with the HTM6 S3?
For home theater use, yes — a subwoofer is strongly recommended. The HTM6 S3’s useful bass response starts at about 72Hz (±3dB), which means it does not extend into the deep bass frequencies of movie soundtracks. Your AV receiver will direct those low frequencies to a subwoofer via the LFE channel. B&W’s own ASW610 or ASW608 subwoofers are natural partners. For music-only use without a subwoofer, the HTM6 S3 extends to 42Hz at −6dB, which is adequate for many applications but will lack the very lowest octave.
Does the HTM6 S3 need a powerful amplifier?
Its 87dB sensitivity is lower than average for a center channel — many competing speakers are 88–92dB. This means it needs a bit more amplifier power to play at the same volume compared to a higher-sensitivity speaker. At 8 ohms nominal (4.3 ohms minimum), it is not a difficult load for any modern AV receiver. Look for at least 50W per channel at 8 ohms for comfortable everyday listening; 80–120W will get more dynamic headroom for loud movie scenes. If you are using a receiver near the lower end of its power spec, call us and we can confirm compatibility.
Can I place the HTM6 S3 in an enclosed cabinet?
With caution. The HTM6 S3 has a rear-firing Flowport bass port, which means it needs clearance behind the cabinet to function properly. B&W recommends leaving adequate space between the rear of the speaker and any wall or shelf. If you must place it very close to a rear surface, use the included foam port plugs to reduce bass port output and minimize boom. Check the depth dimension carefully: 283mm / 11.2” including the grille and terminals.
Can I bi-wire the HTM6 S3?
Yes. The HTM6 S3 has two pairs of binding post terminals for bi-wire connections. Bi-wiring runs separate speaker cables from your amplifier to the high-frequency and low-frequency sections of the crossover, which can improve transparency. Single-wire connection with a jumper link is also possible if your amplifier has only one set of speaker outputs per channel.
What’s the difference between the three finishes?
The Black finish has a matte black cabinet — the classic choice for a dedicated home theater room. White has a lighter, more contemporary look that blends well in modern living spaces. Oak uses a woodgrain vinyl wrap on the cabinet sides with a lighter-colored baffle for a warmer, more traditional furniture appearance. All three finishes accept the same magnetic grilles (available in Black or Grey). Choose whichever best matches your room and the finish of your other 600 Series S3 speakers.
Does it come with a grille?
Yes — one magnetic grille is included. Grilles are available in Black or Grey. The magnetic design means no visible attachment hardware and easy, tool-free removal.
