Five Stars - What Hi-Fi? Magazine

"One of the Finest Power Amps Available for the Money"

The TToby stereo power amplifier from Chord Electronics may be ideally suited to compact living environments, but don’t let that fool you. Its performance is huge. With similar legendary amplification derived from Chord's pricier SPM range, TToby doesn’t compromise on power or on providing you with the purest audio experience possible.

"The TToby surprised us. We weren’t expecting such a balanced and musical performance from something so compact," notes England's What Hi-Fi? magazine, which award the TToby its top rating of Five Stars. "It just goes to show that everything should only be judged after listening. Despite appearances, this is one of the finest power amps available for the money."

    "A Stunning Achievement"

"The TToby is a stunning achievement by John Franks and the Chord Electronics team," reports Jay Luong, audiobacon.net. "The more time I spend with the unobtrusive TToby, the more impressed I am at how natural recordings sound. From jazz to orchestral, to pop, and even rap. You’re able to 'hear the lips and lungs behind the microphone.' It’s difficult to believe this is coming from a tiny Class A/B amplifier."

Jay Luong concludes, "Although the Chord TToby is not inexpensive, it won’t take you long to realize it performs at the top of its class. Give the Chord TToby a listen, especially if you have a Chord Electronics DAC. It’ll be too alluring to resist."

Proprietary Amplification Technology and Design Know-How

The TToby has been designed to complement Chord's desktop DAC/headphone amplifier, the Hugo TT 2 and it shares the same compact form factor as its stablemate. The combination of Chord's 1M-tap digital upscaling device, the M Scaler, plus the Hugo TT 2 and the TToby provides a high-quality hi-fi system, with desktop dimensions and a space-saving footprint. Despite its size, the TToby sets new standards for small amplifiers and takes full advantage of Chord Electronics’ proprietary amplification technology and design know-how.

TToby is a Class AB Sliding Bias design for superb sound quality, using Chord MOSFET construction with fully falanced circuitry and an HF switch mode power supply. The frequency response is 5 Hz – 100kHz +/- 0.5dB with a signal-to-noise ratio of better than -83dB.

Effortlessly Drives a Wide Range of Speakers

The addition of TToby, enables owners of the Hugo TT 2 to fully exploit the Hugo TT 2 as a ‘digital preamp’, effortlessly driving a wide variety of loudspeakers, large or small, in addition to the Hugo TT 2’s headphone prowess. The TToby is a 100-watt design, featuring both an unbalanced and balanced input, to take advantage of the Hugo TT 2’s XLR output.

TToby features two of Chord's famous high-frequency power supplies. It benefits from forced air-cooling through the aluminum casework by means of a sonically closed anechoic miniature multi-speed quadruple-fan plenum chamber. This enables the external design to be free of sharp heatsinks and, therefore, carry a stunning aesthetic. The M Scaler/Hugo TT 2/TToby combination offers both class-leading DAC and amplification technology via headphones and loudspeakers, giving complete flexibility for however you choose to listen.

"The TToby is a stunning achievement by John Franks and the Chord Electronics team. He obviously wasn’t willing to compromise sound quality for size or design. Most designers won’t consult with other ears when designing products, which baffles me. Mr. Franks, on the other hand, gets the team together for listening tests and takes feedback seriously. I have no doubt this is one of the reasons why the TToby is voiced so beautifully."

"This is an exceptionally good power amplifier – it just happens to be small, which will no doubt expand the possibilities for its use beyond partnering its matching HugoTT DAC/headphone preamp. To think of it as a great desktop choice is to do it a disservice – yes, it will perform that function very well, but this miniaturised version of Chord's might power amplifiers has lost none of its heritage in the process."
