Product of the Year 2025, Best Wired Over-Ear Headphones Over £200 – What Hi-Fi? Magazine
Superlative Tonal Balance, Dynamics, Imaging, and Realism
With its metal housing, the SR325x brings a surgical precision to your music that you won’t find in the rest of the Prestige Series. It is a true top-of-the-line headphone. Better imaging of the space between the instruments paints a clearer picture of your music in their soundstage.
Some of the marvels of a Grado driver are the clarity and range, revealing new notes and details in songs heard hundreds of times. With superlative tonal balance, dynamics, imaging, and realism, the SR325x lays out an extremely detailed presentation.
Award-Winning Performance
The SR325X received a Product of the Year Award from What Hi-Fi? magazine, recognizing it as Best Wired Over-Ear Headphones Over £200 for 2025. According to the review, “The best just got that bit better: Grado's SR325x open-back headphones remain a class leader at this level."
"These Grados once again prove that evolution is arguably a more reliable way of making things better than a headline-grabbing design revolution."
"While there is plenty of new competition at this £200-£400 price level, we find that nothing quite beats the Grado for communicating all elements of music faithfully and with such enthusiasm."
Grado X-Series Drivers
Fourth Generation Grado drivers are here. Specifically tuned for the SR325x, this new speaker design features a more powerful magnetic circuit, a voice coil with decreased effective mass, and a reconfigured diaphragm. Reengineering these components for Grado's 44mm drivers improves efficiency, reduces distortion, and preserves the harmonic integrity of your music. Drivers are matched to 0.05dB compared to 0.1dB matching for the SR60x, SR80x, and SR125x Prestige models. The new F cushion opens up the sound to more textured tones.
New Cables and Headband
Along with the speakers, the cables and headband have been redesigned for the SR325x. Now housed in a more durable exterior, the eight-conductor cable features a super annealed copper wire for improved purity of the audio signal. The new leather headband features white stitching exclusive to the SR325x in the Prestige Series.
Hand-Built in Brooklyn
Each SR325x is hand-built by Grado's team in Brooklyn. This headphone goes from workbench to workbench until it’s ready for your ears. Grado started building on a kitchen table in 1953, and every experience since then has led to the creation of the SR325x.
"Every Song Feels Like a Live Performance"
"Buy these if you're looking for a mid/upper-mid focused sound signature where every song feels like a live performance / being in front of the stage, with a decent bass punch/texture (although it's not a basshead headphone by any means), intimate vocals, great distorted guitars, and fast transients," reports Flicoco, head-fi.org, February 7, 2024.
"Exemplary for a Headphone in This Price Range"
"To begin with, the comfort of the Grado SR325x is exemplary for a headphone in this price range, light with just enough clamping force to keep it secure, and though they are on-ear headphones the foam earpads are high enough density as to not be irritating," reports Gary Alan Barker, headphone.guru, April 2, 2024
"When it comes to sound the Grado SR325x provides performance you would expect from a headphone at two to three times the price, dynamic and musical, with a linear neutral tonal balance, and deep bass without boom or bloom and extreme clarity without being bright or abrasive."
The New Grado X-Driver Prestige Headphones
Grado Labs new Prestige Series feature the first X Drivers. These newly built speakers are the fourth generation of drivers the Brooklyn company has designed since the introduction of the first Grado headphone in 1991. Along with the superior sound these new drivers produce, the five headphones in the Prestige Series (SR60x, SR80x, SR125x, SR225x, SR325x) are now built with a new durable cable and new headbands.
In twenty years Grado Labs has only released four generations of drivers, the speaker inside the headphone. Avoiding yearly update cycles, Grado has made sure to only place new drivers inside their headphones when there is a significant upgrade. The X Drivers bring a completely redesigned speaker and new harmony to the inner workings of the Prestige Series.
Each X Driver is specifically tuned for headphone they’re built into. Grado has increased the magnetic power of the speaker while decreasing the effective mass of the voice coil. Along with the reconfigured diaphragm, this unison creates a speaker that represents the truest presentation of the original source.
"The Prestige Series means the world to our family", says Jonathan Grado. "It’s the first series we ever released, and includes not only our first-ever headphone (SR80) but also our first metal pair as well (SR325). Our goal was to increase the efficiency of our drivers while not only maintaining, but also improving the purity of the original recording and the mid-range we’re known for. Without the Prestige Series, we wouldn't be here."
"Solid All-Rounders"
"For me, though, the standout are the Grado Labs SR325x headphones. They are solid all-rounders with a truly balanced and attractive sound," notes Stephen Dawson, addictedtoaudio.com.au. "On [Michael Jackson's] 'Beat It', all sense of the thinness was banished by the SR325x headphones. The snare wires are now part of the snare drum, contributing to its sound, not overpowering it. The driving bass is tight and controlled."
"The tonality on display showcases a gorgeous colouration; it’s a snappy and immediate sound with satisfying energy. With its newfound balance and lower-register warmth, the SR325X is more genre versatile than ever," observes Ryan Soo, everydaylistening.net, June 1, 2021.
