Editor's Choice Award 2024 – hi-fi+ Magazine
The Classic Affordable Reference Speaker Cable Now with VariStrand Conductors
In 1979 this classic design put Kimber Kable on the map. After improvements over time, Kimber's 4PR is still considered a reference standard for affordable loudspeaker cables. Millions of feet of this remarkable cable have been sold.
Kimber Kable 4PR loudspeaker cable is a braided cable with 2 x 13awg conductors consisting of 8 strands of OFE copper (Oxygen-Free Electrolytic). Kimber's patented Varistrand™ technology incorporates seven specifically selected strand gauges within each conductor. This cable uses polyethylene dielectric.
Award-Winning Performance
England's hi-fi+ magazine honored the 4PR with an Editor's Choice Award for 2024.
"The Kimber Kable 4PR and 8PR cables are in the 'base' series of Kimber Kable's offerings. They serve as a solid foundation for audio enthusiasts looking to climb the peaks of audio quality."
"Overall, the Kimber Kable 4PR and 8PR loudspeaker cables are highly recommended for those seeing a quality audio experience. They offer a combination of energy, dynamism, and refinement, making them a popular choice among audiophiles building their first system."
"Detail, Bass Extension, and Sweetness"
"4PR impressed us in a very positive way with its combination of detail, bass extension, and sweetness," notes Richard Black, techradar.com, July 19, 2011. "It has a very convincing way with deep bass, keeping it under tight rein while allowing it to blossom when needed and maintaining precise pitch and duration in a way few budget cables can match."
"The Kimber 4PR and 8PR, although pricey, probably offers some of the highest quality-to-value ratios I've seen in exotic cables. Not only does Kimber not refute the importance of quantifying the performance of their products, but they provide you with very conservative measurements to boot. They don't wrap their products in warm or fuzzy technobabble," reports Gene DellaSala, Audioholics.com, May 19, 2009.
"There is a warm coherency from top-to-bottom... The speaker drivers, a slightly strange term to use with Magnepans, seemed to now play as one. The lowest bass, never a strong point on the Magnepans, was better too," says Paul Westwood, 6th Street Bridge tube blog, February 22, 2010.
Now Featuring Patented VariStrand Conductors
In 1979, Ray Kimber created his first speaker cables, the 4PR and 8PR. These models quickly became an industry favorite and were found in home systems and dealer showrooms around the world. His next speaker cable innovation came years later with the introduction of VariStrand conductors and with it the creation of 4VS and 8VS speaker cables.
As raw materials and manufacturing expenses have risen, the cost to produce PR has increased to be nearly that of Kimber Kable's VS speaker cable line. In order to simplify its speaker cable offerings and to mitigate the confusion of having two product lines essentially priced the same, Kimber Kable has combined the two products by creating PR with VariStrand conductors. Combining the PR and VS product lines in this way gives the performance of VS while maintaining the more recognizable name of PR.
Back-to-the-Roots Red and Black Colors
In order to help distinguish this new version of PR with VariStrand conductors from the previous version with regular stranding, Kimber Kable is going back to its roots and using the original Red and Black colors that were used when Ray Kimber launched PR back in 1979.
