Recommended Component – Stereophile
Fast, Open, and Detailed Sound
Kimber Kable's Illuminations D60 coaxial digital interconnect is praised by reviewers the world over for its fast, open, and detailed sound. Long after its introduction it is still considered to be one of the best available at any price.
The pure silver center core conductor is carefully wrapped in air articulated teflon insulation tape surrounded by a helically wound silver-plated copper shield conductor, which is further shielded by another silver-plated copper shield.
Custom-made 75 ohm RCA connectors are hand soldered in place using silver-bearing solder. As the name suggests, Data Flex Studio is highly flexible, yet maintains a remarkable +/-1.0 ohm impedance from end to end.
Award-Winning Performance
D60 was honored as a Stereophile Recommended Component. "It's hard to get Stereophile writers to agree on anything," observes Vol. 19, No. 10 of the magazine, "but Robert Harley, Johnathan Scull, Kalman Rubinson, Lonnie Brownell, Robert Reina, and Wes Philips all use this as their reference. 'Sometime mercilessly revealing,' Kalman Rubinson maintains, 'but never harsh.' 'Fast, open, and detailed,' raved Johnathan Scull. 'Focused and nuanced,' concurs Wes Philips. 'Smooth yet highly detailed, spacious soundstage, and lack of hardness and edge,' says Robert Harley."
"Smooth, Transparent, with Plenty of Transient Detail"
"The D60 offered up great momentum, a seamless image across the frequency band, bulging bass lines, 3-D imaging, and an ability to dig out detail within detail," raves Cable Guru Robert Schryer, pmamagazine.org, May 7, 2022. "It was very good at portraying the balance that exists between a note’s main sound and the fine sonic gradations of that note’s structure. The overall sound was smooth, transparent, with plenty of transient detail."
"A very clean and dynamic sounding cable," reports stereonet.com, February 11, 2024. "I had to try it out to test the digital outputs of my new Auralic G2.2. This is still a current model. It's a very neutral cable which gives a good sense of "air" and atmospherics to music."
"Quite Simply, This Is the Best"
"Quite simply, this is the best digital interconnect I have ever used in my system. It is also one of the most expensive. But it so clearly outclassed almost all other digital cables I've tried, that its somewhat higher price can be easily justified, observes Doug Schneider, soundstagenetwork.com.
"For bang for buck in my setup, the Kimber seems to be the solution or at least puts an end to searching," notes Theo, forum.audiogon.com, April 24, 2019.
Construction Details
The D60's silver solid core center conductor for maximum conductivity. The dual layer pure silver shielding with 100% coverage is circumferentially bonded to the connector shell for absolute immunity to noise.
An intermediate layer of un-sintered semi-conductive PTFE prevents triboelectric noise from reaching the signal path. This noise is the result of mechanical vibration which can contaminate the digital signal.
Velocity of Propagation
An air-articulated PTFE core results in propagation velocity of 85% for vanishing low delay, essential for ultra-responsive digital signal transmission. The D60 is truly a design to 'push every bit' of musical information.
Other construction benefits include tightly controlled 75Ω impedance and nitrogen-assisted hand soldered termination.
"The bass was robust and full with a very smooth, controlled sound. Deep bass was conveyed with authority and control. Midrange was natural and musical," notes reviewer DM at audioasylum.com.
