Outstanding Product Award – Hi-Fi News Magazine
Perfect 10 Award – 10audio.com
"Huge, Immersive with a Great Amount of Detail"
The MoFi UltraPhono MM/MC phono preamp with built-in headphone amp replicates the wide bandwidth transparency that Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab mastering engineers demand. Tim De Paravicini, the designer responsible for the Mobile Fidelity Gain2™ Ultra Analog cutting system, assisted with the internal circuitry to ensure your analog system at home faithfully reproduces the music buried in the grooves of your LPs.
Award-Winning Performance
"Thanks to its various balanced/SE inputs and outputs, excellent range of adjustments and some novel new features, MoFi's smart-looking MasterPhono is a pleasure to use. More importantly it's a superlative performer, able to deliver all the detail, punch and musical emotion of your vinyl collection," reports Adam Smith in his January 8, 2024 review for England's Hi-Fi News magazine, which honored the UltraPhono with an Outstanding Product Award.
And it won a Perfect 10 Award from 10audio.com. "This is one of the two best conventional phono preamplifiers this lifelong audiophile has heard due to its seemingly perfect tonal linearity and consistent resolution all across the musical spectrum," observes Jerry Seigel, 10audio.com, October 2024. "For another $47,000 or so, you might enjoy incremental sonic improvements, but the MP doesn’t disappoint with its excellent resolution and very enjoyable – very consistent – sound."
"Soundstage was Huge, Immersive"
"Soundstage was huge, immersive and with the perception of a great amount of detail," raves audio-head.com, May 26, 2021. "The sound is unashamedly upfront, and even depth is portrayed very clearly and explicitly. The upper mids and high end are certainly not shy though this amp, but I didn’t feel that they were over overblown or harsh. This is a very tastefully done forward tuning with lots of excitement."
Class-A Headphone Amplifier
UltraPhono includes a powerful Class A headphone amplifier perfect for quiet nights when you want to keep the records spinning in private. And with a 31-step volume control built into the unit, all you need to do is directly plug-in your headphones and turn it up! It's the easiest way to achieve high-fidelity vinyl playback without speakers and electronics.
Adjustable Gain and Loading
UltraPhono has been engineered to work with a wide array of phono cartridges on the market today. Because phono cartridges require special impedance and gain settings, you should configure UltraPhono to suit the cartridge of your choice.
With selectable gain and loading, you will be able to tailor UltraPhono to match nearly any moving-magnet or moving-coil cartridge on the market. A readily accessible bank of toggle switches can be found on the unit’s underside to quickly make adjustments without the need for any tools.
"Intoxicating Levels of Power and Clarity"
"With the MasterPhono, this wild, stunning disc made me feel like I was the one pounding the piano. Piano sustain and percussive drum sounds were presented solidly, right there in front of me," raves Herb Reichert, stereophile.com, December 18, 2023.
"The Bartók sonata came through the MasterPhono with intoxicating levels of power and clarity, but that was nothing compared to the high-energy excitements of René Saorgin playing toccatas by Georg Muffat."
"Highly Recommended"
"The made-in-America MoFi MasterPhono is among the easiest, most versatile, and fun-to-use phono preamps available today, and it’s also among the most pleasing sounding for its price and well beyond. Highly recommended," concludes Michael Fremer, The Absolute Sound, February 27, 2024.
"Unlike some phonostages I have used in the past, the MoFi Masterphono made LPs sound lively and fun – a veritable toe-tapping, head-bobbing enterprise," notes John Wilson, futureaudiophile.com, February 26, 2024. "I would not hesitate to recommend a thorough audition of this phonostage to anyone interested in a component at this level of cost. Because, in all fairness, the MoFi Masterphono is simply a well-designed and exceptional phonostage."
Mono Mode and Subsonic Filter
UltraPhono includes mono mode and a subsonic filter. The former is expressly tailored for mono LPs of any vintage. You'll hear more front-to-back layering, richer tonalities, and greater solidity when using the mono switch with your mono vinyl. If you're a fan of mono recordings, vintage or reissues like The Beatles in Mono box set or the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab Bob Dylan Series, the mono mode will come as a revelation. It will improve image stability and generate richer tone.
The equally beneficial subsonic filter helps correct deficiencies associated with warped LPs or vibrational feedback when playing music at higher volume. No matter what kind of record you play, UltraPhono delivers the level of wide-bandwidth transparency and dynamic responsiveness demanded by the finest records. An external, balanced power supply furthers this aim by keeping noise away from the delicate audio signal and contributing to a super-low noise floor.
In-House Manufacturing in Michigan
Prestige doesn't come easy – or cheap. To meet all its specific needs and demands, Mobile Fidelity established a new, dedicated facility in Michigan to build the majority of its products in the USA. While it's an uncommon and expensive endeavor in today's audio industry, in-house manufacturing is the only way to maintain total quality control and create products that live up to the exacting standards Mobile Fidelity established over the past four decades with music releases. The approach cuts both ways, giving you the security and confidence that the Mobile Fidelity product you own is built to perform at the highest specifications.
"I Can't Think of a Better Buy"
"The Master Phono seemed to widen the versatility of both the ZYX and Koetsu Sky Blue cartridges, as I played all genres of music with both of them to great satisfaction and enjoyment. The breadth of their capabilities, via the Master’s transimpedance circuit, covered the full range of all the music I play from folk, traditional jazz, jazz fusion, big band and Tex-Mex vocal, classical, and rock," observes Garrett Hongo, pt.audio , June 16, 2024.
"The meters and mono features further stretch the unit’s versatility and value. If you’re in the market for a reasonably affordable piece of analog electronics, I encourage you to start with this phono stage aptly named the Master. At its price point, I just can’t think of a better buy than the MoFi Master Phono."
MoFi Electronics
Drawing on 40 years of making records at Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, the new MoFi Electronics division is focused on improving the sonic integrity of audio reproduction in the home. MoFi products are the result of multiple collaborations with some of the world’s best audio designers, stemming from decades of experience in the studio.
The new StudioPhono and UltraPhono phonostages replicate the wide bandwidth transparency mastering engineers demand. The circuits are based on ideas first applied to the GAIN 2™ mastering chain at Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab.
