"The trouble with the most common outlets in most homes is poor design and cheap parts," explains Pangea Audio Design Engineer, Jay Victor. "They are made from a cheap plastic that's a poor insulator and from thin, low-grade metals. Hold one of these outlets in your hand. They're flimsy. I designed the new Pangea Audio outlets from the ground up [pun intended!] to be superior in every way to standard outlets to make sure you get the best performance possible from your sensitive electronics."
An 'Overkill' Outlet Insulator
"Another problem with standard AC wall receptacles is that they use a cheap nylon as an insulator in the outlets," Jay explains. "From my years developing components for X-Ray equipment, I knew of an advanced polymer which has a much lower dielectric constant, making it a far better insulator. It also has a much higher voltage standoff. In fact, I've used it in X-Ray cable connectors that had to handle 250,000 volts."
"Sure, 250,000-volt standoff capability may sound like overkill," Jay admits. "But audiophiles would demand nothing but the best when it comes to supplying power to their sensitive audio gear. So that's what I decided to use."
Firmly Gripping High-grade Copper Contacts
Another pet peeve that Jay has with standard AC outlets is that "almost all manufacturers use cheap thin brass for their AC contacts. Only a select few of those are even nickel plated to prevent corrosion in wet environments. This isn't really an improvement. I believe that nickel plating is detrimental to performance."
"For our entry-level Premier AC receptacle I used extra-thick contacts made of copper-plated phosphor bronze. They firmly grip male AC plug prongs without letting go," said Jay. "It's a 20-amp outlet design – overkill, again, in some cases, I admit – but the outlet works perfectly with either 15-amp or 20-amp AC plugs. So Premier provides that extra versatility, too."
Receptacle Mounting Bracket
"Speaking of pet peeves," Jay continued. "Take a look at the flimsy mounting bracket most outlets feature to bolt the outlet to the wall box. I couldn't bear to have any of my outlets insecure, so I included a very thick metal mounting bracket instead. Nothings going to shake this outlet loose from the wall," Jay told us, "except maybe an earthquake."
