What a Record Clamp Actually Does
A record clamp does one thing: it presses your record firmly and evenly against the platter. That might sound simple, but the effect on playback is anything but. Most records aren't perfectly flat, and even a slight dish or warp creates tiny gaps between the record and the platter mat. Those gaps allow the record to flex and resonate as it spins — and your stylus picks up every bit of that vibration as noise.

The Low Profile Record Clamp will physically fit under Rega dustcovers, but Rega turntables use a shorter spindle than most other designs. Rega's smooth spindle is simply too short for the clamp to get a proper grip. We don't recommend this clamp for Rega turntables. Do I really need a record clamp, or is this just an audiophile tweak?
It depends on your setup and your records. If you have a high-quality cartridge and a well-tuned turntable, a clamp can be one of the most cost-effective upgrades you make — because it improves the mechanical foundation that everything else depends on. If your records are perfectly flat and your platter mat already provides excellent coupling, the improvement may be more subtle. But for most listeners, the improvement in bass tightness and background noise floor is immediately noticeable.
How does a clamp differ from a record weight?
A record weight simply sits on top of the spindle and uses gravity to press the record down. A clamp threads onto the spindle and applies active clamping pressure — it grips rather than just rests. This generally produces a firmer, more consistent coupling between the record and the platter, especially toward the outer edges of the record. Which is better depends on your turntable's bearing design — some are engineered for added weight, others are not. Check your manufacturer's recommendations if you're unsure.
