A Hybrid Amplifier — The Best of Both Worlds

An integrated amplifier is the heart of a stereo system. What makes the Vincent Audio SV-237MKII special is its hybrid design. It uses vacuum tubes in the preamplifier stage and solid-state transistors in the power amplifier stage. Why does that matter? The circuit was designed by German engineer Frank Blöhbaum, and it uses one 12AX7 tube along with two 6N1P-EV tubes in the preamplifier section. The power amp section features four transistors driven by a heavy-duty toroidal transformer, delivering 150 watts per channel into 8-ohm speakers and 250 watts per channel into 4-ohm speakers. That's enough power to drive virtually any pair of speakers, including large floorstanding models and demanding planar or electrostatic designs.

One noteworthy detail: the first 10 watts are delivered in pure Class A mode. Class A is widely considered the best-sounding amplifier topology because the output transistors are always "on" — there's no switching between positive and negative halves of the signal, which eliminates a common source of distortion called crossover distortion. Since most of your everyday listening happens at levels that use fewer than 10 watts, you'll be enjoying Class A sound the vast majority of the time.

Modern Features in a Classic Design

The MKII version brings the SV-237 into the modern era with some welcome updates. There's now a built-in Bluetooth 5.0 receiver, which lets you stream music wirelessly from your phone, tablet, or computer. It's a great way to enjoy Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, or any other streaming service without any extra equipment.

For higher-quality digital connections, the SV-237MKII includes both an optical (Toslink) digital input and a coaxial digital input, each feeding an upgraded Burr Brown PCM 5102 DAC (digital-to-analog converter). A DAC is the chip that translates the ones and zeros of digital music back into the analog signal your speakers need. The PCM 5102 supports high-resolution audio up to 24-bit/192kHz, which means it can handle studio-quality music files with ease.

The front panel also includes bass and treble tone controls — a feature borrowed from the golden age of hi-fi that lets you fine-tune the sound to your room and your preferences. If you prefer a completely uncolored signal, a tone bypass switch takes the controls out of the circuit entirely. There's also a loudness button, which gently boosts bass and treble at low listening volumes so your music doesn't sound thin when you're playing quietly late at night.

The SV-237MKII gives you plenty of ways to connect your gear. On the analog side, there are three stereo RCA line-level inputs — enough for a CD player, a phono preamp (for your turntable), and one more source. Keep in mind there is no built-in phono stage, so if you're a vinyl listener, you'll need a separate phono preamplifier between your turntable and this amp.
