Most people who land here have already read a spec sheet and come away more confused than when they started.

Here's our honest position, the same one we'd give you on the phone. Amp matching isn't complicated once you know which two or three numbers actually matter — and we've been pairing amps with speakers since 1981. The rest of the spec sheet is mostly noise.

The short version: sensitivity and headroom decide more than wattage ever will. Get those right and almost any reasonable amp will sound the way it should.

What actually matters when matching an amp to speakers?

Two numbers get all the attention: watts and ohms. The one that matters most is sensitivity— how loud a speaker gets from each watt you send it.

A high-sensitivity speaker needs far less power to fill a room than a low-sensitivity one rated the same size. Check sensitivity first, then make sure the amp's power range covers your speaker's impedance.

Can too much power hurt my speakers?

Rarely, and almost never from an amp used at normal volumes. Real damage usually comes from the opposite problem: an underpowered amp pushed too hard.

When it runs out of headroom, it clips, and that clipped signal is what actually damages a speaker. Most receiver damage we see traces back to that, not to buying too much amplifier.

Most of the "my amp fried my speakers" calls I've taken over the years turned out to be an underpowered amp clipping, not an overpowered one. When you're unsure, sizing up slightly is almost always the safer call.

Do ohms actually matter?

Yes, but it's simpler than the spec sheet makes it sound. Most speakers run at 6 or 8 ohms, and most amps handle that range comfortably.

Trouble shows up mainly when a lower-impedance speaker meets an amp that isn't built for it. Check the amp's rated impedance range before you buy — that one check matters more than any ohm number by itself.

Integrated amp or separates?

An integrated amp puts the preamp and power amp in one box. It's simpler, usually less expensive, and the right call for most people matching speakers for the first time.

Separates split those two jobs into two components. They cost more and take up more space, but they let you upgrade one piece later without replacing the whole system. Most first-time buyers do fine starting with an integrated amp.

Spec sheets make this sound harder than it is. Here's where each common belief actually lands.

MYTH

More watts always sounds louder and better.
