I'm confused about DACs and streamers
I'm Caleb. These two words trip up a lot of good people — the words more than the gear. Let me make them simple, and tell you when you don't need to buy one at all.
WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED TO KNOW
First — what is a DAC?
DAC stands for digital-to-analog converter. Your music files and streams are just numbers. A DAC turns those numbers into sound your amp can play.
Here's the catch. You already own several. Your phone, laptop, and most amps have one built in. The question is whether a better one is worth it.
A DAC is a translator. It turns the digital file into the analog signal your amp and speakers actually play.
Before you buy a separate DAC, tell me what you're plugging it into. Your amp or active speakers may already have a good one inside.
And what's a streamer?
A streamer is just a smart source. It pulls music over your home network — from Spotify, Tidal, Qobuz, Apple Music, or files on a drive.
Think of it as the CD player for the streaming age. It finds the music and hands it to a DAC, which makes the sound.
One plain note on quality. Standard streaming drops some data to save space. Lossless plans, on Tidal, Qobuz, or Apple Music, keep more of it.
A streamer is the source. It fetches the music and passes it to a DAC. Some streamers include the DAC inside.
Do you already have one?
This is the question I ask first, and it saves people money.
Active, or powered, speakers often have a DAC and a streamer built in. Many integrated amps stream too. Check what you own before you add a box.
If your system already streams, you may need nothing. If it doesn't, you usually need one box, not two.
Check before you buy. Active speakers and many amps already stream. Another box can be money you don't need to spend.
One box, or two?
If you're starting fresh, simpler is better. A streaming DAC — sometimes called a network player — does both jobs in one box.
Two separate boxes give you more room to upgrade later. One box keeps it clean and easy. Many people are satisfied with just one box. Serious audiophiles or music enthusiasts usually go for two.

Two calls taught me most of what this page is trying to say. Here's how each one went.
He didn't need the box at all
A customer called, set on a costly DAC for his system. I asked what he was running. His active speakers already had a capable DAC inside. He didn't need a separate DAC at all. Start with what you have. Then we add only what's missing — nothing more.
LET'S CLEAR A FEW THINGS UP
What usually doesn't matter
These four beliefs send people shopping for the wrong box. I'd rather you didn't.
A pricey DAC transforms your sound.
A competent DAC matters. Past a sensible point, doubling your spend will deliver steadily increasing but not huge improvements.
Higher numbers — "hi-res" — always sound better.
The recording quality and your speakers matter more than the file's numbers. Yes, hi-res sounds better when you have the right gear in front of it.
Bluetooth is fine for serious listening.
Bluetooth is handy, but it compresses the signal. A wired connection transfers the full signal without compromise. Many people don't mind the difference. If you do — wired is the way to go!
Every source needs its own separate DAC.
Your amp, active speakers, or streamer may already have a good one. Check before buying another.
