FIRST, DECODE THE JARGON

Every system does four jobs. That's it.

All the confusing box names — streamer, DAC, preamp, network player — describe pieces of the same four-job chain. Once you see the jobs, the shopping gets easy:

1 · Fetch

Pull the music in — from streaming services, internet radio, or your files. This is the streamer’s job.

2 · Convert

Turn digital back into music. This is the DAC’s job (the chip that does the converting).

3 · Control

Choose the source and set the volume. This is the preamp’s job.

4 · Power

Drive the speakers with real muscle. This is the amplifier’s job.

Here's the part that makes starting fresh so pleasant: modern gear combines these jobs beautifully. Your whole decision is how many boxes you want those four jobs living in — and there's no wrong answer, just the right fit for you.

A streamer with a built-in DAC

This is the one-box answer that works with every amplifier ever made — including a 1970s receiver. The streamer's built-in DAC (the chip that turns digital back into music) converts everything internally and sends ready-to-play analog sound out of ordinary red-and-white jacks, straight into any free input. A streaming DAC + an integrated amp

Split the jobs in half: a streaming DAC(sometimes called a network player) fetches and converts, then hands the music to an integrated amplifier that controls and powers. Why bother? Upgrade freedom. Years from now you can improve either half without replacing the other — and mix brands to taste. It's one more box and one more cable for a system that can evolve with you.

Full disclosure: we love separates — a dedicated streamer, DAC, preamp, and power amp, each box doing one job superbly. It's what most of us run at home. But we'll be honest with you the way we'd be with a friend: it's not where to start. Begin with one or two great boxes, live with the music, and if the bug bites, the deep end will still be here — and so will we.
