Significantly Upgraded Audiophile Automatic Turntable
The AUTOMAT A2 continues the success of pro-Ject's fully mechanical automatic turntables. New on the automatics of the A2, you can now select the 'drop off point' at 45 RPM, allowing the A2's automatic mechanism to distinguish between 7" 45 RPM singles and audiophile 45 RPM 12" LPs.
Pro-Ject has also added 78 RPM to the system, allowing you to dig back into old shellac collections. In typical Pro-ect fashion, the motor is electronically controlled for the most accurate and stable playback speeds.
Press start, and the tonearm is automatically moved to the lead-in groove of the record. Once the record has started to play, the automatics are completely taken out of the equation and do not affecting the playback quality, including the free movement of the tonearm and platter. Because the automatics work entirely mechanically with no additional electronics needed, they neither influence nor degrade sound quality during playback!
MDF Main Chassis and Sub-Chassis
The new heavy MDF main chassis of the A2 is made and designed in Austria and carefully hand painted in a luxurious eight-layer matt black finish. This provides a very sturdy base for the sub-chassis and reduces hollow spaces to avoid resonances.
The A2 employs a sub-chassis construction. The tonearm, platter bearing, and motor are mounted onto a separate floating sub-chassis. This isolates all the most critical turntable elements further and has especially big advantages, when your loudspeakers are very close to your turntable.
Improved Automatic Mechanism
Pro-Ject has invested in a new aluminum diecast top for the entire sub-chassis and automatic mechanism. eliminating plastic parts from the original German automatic design wherever possible, the A2 marks the first time in 50 years that the original automatic design has received this kind of significant improvement.
Improved Tonearm and Cardanic Bearing
The A2 features an 8.3†ultra-light-mass aluminum tonearm with an improved tonearm tube that provides an ideal match for the included Sumiko Rainier phono cartridge.
With this new tonearm, Pro-Ject has retained the super-fast response and transient detail with lots of fine microdynamics, while the Sumiko Rainier adds body and musical warmth. The tonearm bearing is now made out of aluminum and features a four-pin-point cardanic construction with steel tip-ball bearings from Pro-Ject's own production.
Massless Tracking Force Adjustment
The A2 uses a new system for setting the tracking force. First you level out the tonearm with the damped counterweight. Damping the counterweight makes the tonearm more robust and decouples the counterweight reducing resonant frequencies. Then you adjust the tracking force by turning a dial directly on the tonearm bearing. This system is very fast, precise, and efficient, and it keeps the center of gravity directly on top of the bearing center. The spring based anti-skating can also be adjusted directly on the tonearm base.
Push-button Electronic Speed Change
Ultimate convenience is achieved thanks to the built-in electronic speed change. This allows you to change speeds with the push of a button instead of having to fuss around with the turntable belt and pulley. And the electronic speed control gives you extremely accurate speed control at 33-1/3 rpm, 45 rpm, and 78 rpm, allowing you to enjoy all of your records.
Includes Sumiko Rainier MM Cartridge
The AUTOMAT A2 is ready to start enjoying right out of the carton. Included is a factory-installed Sumiko Rainier Moving Magnet Cartridge, which celivers smooth, natural sound reproduction. The ability to upgrade the stock stylus to the Sumiko Olympia or Moonstone models makes Rainier the perfect entry-level cartridge that will not disappoint for years to come.
