What You Need to Know
What Is a Subwoofer Cable, and Why Use One Designed for the Job?
A subwoofer cable is an RCA interconnect — a single conductor with a shield around it and an RCA plug at each end. What makes a “subwoofer cable” different is what it has to put up with.
The signal it carries is the LFE channel — Low Frequency Effects, the dedicated low-frequency mono signal a home theater receiver, processor, or 2-channel preamp sends to a powered subwoofer. The run is usually long, and the path often passes close to AC and to the subwoofer’s own switch-mode power supply.
A cable engineered for that job uses heavier shielding and rugged connectors. Mechanically, the Boxer can also be used as a regular RCA interconnect anywhere else in your system.
Where Does This Cable Belong in the AudioQuest Subwoofer Line?
The Boxer sits in the upper tier of AudioQuest’s dog-named subwoofer cable family — the line goes Black Lab, Greyhound, Irish Red, Boxer, Husky. The Boxer is the first cable in the family to add the Carbon-Based Noise-Dissipation System and the patented 72V Dielectric-Bias System on top of solid Perfect-Surface Copper conductors.
What’s Different About This One?
The Boxer uses solid Perfect-Surface Copper conductors. Perfect-Surface Copper (PSC) is high-purity copper drawn through a process that leaves the surface unusually smooth, which helps with corrosion resistance over the cable’s lifetime. Solid-core construction means a single piece of copper rather than many small strands — eliminating strand-to-strand interaction in the conductor.
The dielectric — the insulation surrounding the copper — is a polyethylene air-tube. The conductor sits suspended inside a tube of polyethylene, with air around most of its length. Air is the lowest-loss dielectric available short of vacuum.
The shield is the Carbon-Based Noise-Dissipation System (NDS) — a carbon-loaded layer that absorbs radio-frequency noise picked up by the cable instead of letting that noise drain back into the audio circuit’s ground. It’s a meaningful step beyond the simple shields used lower in the line.
The RCA terminations are silver-plated and cold-welded. Cold-welding bonds the conductor to the connector under high pressure rather than soldering — no flux residue, no eutectic alloy in the signal path, and a mechanically stable joint that doesn’t relax over time.
Bill Low founded AudioQuest in 1980, and his “Do No Harm” philosophy still drives the line — the cable’s first job is to get out of the music’s way.
DBS Explained — The 72V Dielectric-Bias System
The Boxer carries AudioQuest’s patented Dielectric-Bias System (DBS) — a small battery pack on the cable that applies a constant 72-volt electrostatic field to the dielectric (the insulation around the conductors). The idea is to polarize the dielectric so it doesn’t absorb and re-release small amounts of energy back into the signal as the audio current changes.
DBS is patented (US Patent #7,224,108). The battery pack has a test button with an LED on it, so you can confirm the battery is alive at any time — just press the button and look for the light. Battery life is rated for multiple years of normal service. AudioQuest specifies the exact battery life on the Boxer’s manufacturer page; verify the current rating there.
Where Does This Cable Belong in Your System?
The Boxer is matched to upper home theater systems and serious 2.1 setups, where the chain around the subwoofer cable justifies AudioQuest’s signature technologies.
- Good fit: upper home theater systems, AVR or processor LFE-out feeding a high-quality powered subwoofer, 2-channel preamp sub-out feeding a 2.1 subwoofer in a system with high-end electronics.
- Not ideal: entry or basic mid-tier systems where the rest of the chain doesn’t yet justify the step up — those systems are better matched by Greyhound or Irish Red.
- Different configuration? If your subwoofer has two RCA inputs labeled L and R, you want the Boxer Y-cable version instead.
Single Sub or Dual Subs?
Most home theater subwoofers have a single RCA input labeled “LFE.” A standard single-end subwoofer cable like this one connects directly. Some subs — particularly REL models and certain 2-channel-music-focused designs — have stereo L/R RCA inputs that internally sum to mono. For those, the Y-cable version is the natural choice.
Single-End or Y-Cable — Which One Do I Need?
The answer comes down to what’s on the back of your subwoofer. Most home theater subs have a single RCA input labeled “LFE” — single-end is what you want. Some subs (REL and certain 2-channel-music subwoofers) have stereo L/R RCA inputs that internally sum to mono — for those, the Y-cable version is the right choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a subwoofer cable actually do?
Carries the LFE channel from receiver/processor/preamp to powered subwoofer. Engineered for long runs in noisy AV environments.
Can I use a regular RCA interconnect instead?
A well-built regular RCA will work mechanically. The Boxer adds Carbon-Based shielding, 72V DBS, silver-plated cold-welded RCAs, and long lengths specifically for subwoofer service.
What length do I need?
Measure the actual cable route, not straight-line distance. Add slack. When in doubt, go one length up.
What if my sub has two RCA inputs (L and R)?
You want the Y-cable version of the Boxer.
How long does the DBS battery last?
Multiple years of normal service. Press the test button on the battery pack — if the LED lights, the battery is alive. The pack is replaceable.
How does this compare to the Irish Red below it?
Same PSC conductor and silver-plated cold-welded RCAs. The Boxer adds Carbon-Based NDS and 72V DBS.
What’s the warranty?
Non-transferable, original-owner limited lifetime warranty. Audio Advisor is an authorized AudioQuest dealer.
