What You Need to Know
What Is This Product and What Does It Do?
A multi-channel power amplifier takes the processed audio signal from your surround processor or AV receiver and sends it to your speakers with enough power to fill the room. The quality of that amplification shapes everything you hear — every movie moment, every music performance, every spatial detail.
The Bryston 9B³ is the five-channel version of Bryston’s legendary 9B series. It delivers 200 watts per channel. And unlike most multi-channel amplifiers, it is not a single large amplifier divided into five sections.
Each of the five channels is a fully independent, self-contained module — its own circuit board, its own power supply, its own toroidal transformer. No channel shares power with any other. The five channels are independent in the same way that five separate monoblock amplifiers would be.
Why Independent Power Supplies Matter
In most multi-channel amplifiers, all channels share one power supply. When one channel demands a surge of power — a loud film effect, a bass transient — it draws from the same pool as the others. That competition shows up as compressed dynamics and a flattened sense of space.
The 9B³ eliminates this problem. Each channel draws from its own dedicated supply. A loud moment on the center channel has no effect on what the left or right channels can deliver. All five channels can run at full rated power at the same time.
The Salomie Circuit — Bryston’s Patented Innovation
Every Cubed Series amplifier uses Bryston’s patented Salomie input circuit, developed with the late Dr. Ioan Alexandru Salomie. According to Bryston, the circuit uses an array of 12 active devices at the first gain stage to act as a super-linear input buffer.
The buffer’s job is to catch and remove distortion and noise before they enter the main signal path. In most amplifiers, anything that gets into the input gets amplified right along with the music. The Salomie circuit stops that before it starts.
Bryston describes the results as dramatically less input-stage distortion, improved rejection of electromagnetic and radio-frequency noise, and standby power below 500mW. The 9B³ is the first five-channel Bryston amplifier to include this circuit.
Modular Design — Built for the Long Term
The 9B³ is orderable in three-, four-, or five-channel versions. Additional channel modules can be added later as your system grows. And if a channel ever needs service, it can be removed and replaced independently — without returning the whole amplifier.
This modular serviceability is rare in multi-channel amplifiers. Most competing designs require the entire unit to be returned for even a single-channel repair. The 9B³’s construction makes long-term ownership significantly more practical.
Network Monitoring and Control
The 9B³ has a built-in Ethernet port that hosts its own web page. From any browser on your network, you can monitor each channel’s temperature, see clipping alerts, mute individual channels, and power the amplifier on or off. Firmware updates can also be applied this way.
For custom installation and home automation, an RS-232 serial port integrates with Crestron, Control4, Savant, and similar platforms. A DC trigger input and output handle automated power switching with processors and other components in your system.
SoftStart — Protection Built In
SoftStart is a microprocessor-controlled startup sequence. When the 9B³ powers on, it gradually ramps up its current draw instead of pulling full load all at once. This protects your speakers from startup transients and prevents tripping household circuit breakers — a real concern with a 65-pound amplifier drawing significant startup current.
Build and Finish
The chassis is machined and anodized aluminum. The black faceplate carries green LED status indicators — one per channel. The 19-inch version includes front-mounted handles for rack installation. The amplifier is fully convection cooled: no fans, no noise in operation.
Every 9B³ is built by hand in Dwight, Ontario, Canada. Bryston backs it with a 10-year parts-and-labor warranty.
Who Is This Best For?
Home theater builders who won’t compromise — A shared-power amplifier will always make dynamic tradeoffs under load. The 9B³ does not. Each channel has its own supply and delivers full rated power regardless of what the others are doing.
Surround sound music listeners — Multi-channel SACD, Dolby Atmos Music, and high-resolution surround formats deserve amplification that preserves every spatial detail. The Salomie circuit brings Bryston’s reference input performance to all five channels.
Custom installation professionals — Network control, DC trigger, SoftStart, optional rear trim pots (PRO version), and modular serviceability make the 9B³ straightforward to integrate and maintain in any installation.
Buyers building a system over time — Start with three or four channels and add the fifth module when you’re ready. The chassis accommodates the expansion without any additional hardware.
Long-term thinkers — Modular construction means individual channel repair without returning the whole amplifier. Bryston’s 10-year warranty and Canada-based service back it up.
Pairs Well With
The 9B³ is a power amplifier — it needs a surround processor or AV preamplifier to feed it signals. Here are pairings worth considering.
- AV Surround Processor — The 9B³ needs a processor with dedicated pre-out connections — one per channel, balanced XLR preferred. Balanced connections preserve the 9B³’s noise-rejection advantage from processor to speaker.
- Bryston 4B³ Stereo Amplifier — For systems with more than five channels, a Bryston 4B³ handles the additional channels while staying matched in power, topology, and character with the 9B³.
- Bryston 7B³ Monoblock Amplifiers — Dedicate a pair of Bryston monoblocks to your front left and right channels for maximum two-channel performance. Use the 9B³ for center, surrounds, and height channels.
- High-Performance Speakers — 200 watts per channel removes most amplifier-related speaker limitations. If you’ve been holding back on speaker choice because of insufficient amplification, the 9B³ changes that.
- Power Conditioner — A quality power conditioner provides clean, stable AC power and protects your investment. Worthwhile with an amplifier at this level.

Features & Specifications
200 Watts Per Channel — All Five at Full Power
The 9B³ delivers 200 watts per channel into 8-ohm speakers, or 300 watts per channel into 4-ohm loads. Because each channel has its own power supply and transformer, these figures are available on all five channels simultaneously. Demanding speakers on every channel do not reduce what any individual channel delivers.
Five Independent Modular Channels
Each channel is a removable assembly with its own circuit board, power supply, toroidal transformer, inputs, and speaker outputs. No channel shares components with any other. If one channel needs service, it can be pulled and replaced without taking the rest offline.
Modules can be purchased separately and added later. Start with a 3- or 4-channel unit and install the additional module when your system is ready for it.
Patented Salomie Input Circuit
Every channel uses Bryston’s patented Salomie input circuit — 12 active devices at the first gain stage that act as a super-linear buffer. According to Bryston, this removes distortion and filters out EMI and RFI interference before they reach the amplification stage. Standby power is less than 500mW.
Switchable Gain — 23dB or 29dB
A front-panel switch selects between two gain levels. 23dB suits processors with a higher output level. 29dB suits lower-output sources or when extra sensitivity is needed. Correct gain selection keeps the processor’s volume control in a comfortable, usable range and avoids amplifying the noise floor along with the signal.
Balanced XLR and Single-Ended RCA Inputs
Each channel has both a balanced XLR input and a single-ended RCA input. Balanced connections reject common-mode noise picked up along the cable run between processor and amplifier — the longer the run, the more relevant this becomes. Noise at the XLR input measures -110dB; the RCA input measures less than -108dB.
Network Monitoring and Control
An Ethernet port on the rear panel connects the 9B³ to your local network. The built-in web interface lets you monitor per-channel temperature, view clipping alerts, mute individual channels, power the unit on or off, and install firmware updates — all from a browser on any device.
RS-232 serial control integrates the 9B³ with Crestron, Control4, Savant, and similar home automation platforms. DC trigger input and output handle automated power sequencing with other components in your system.
SoftStart and DC Trigger
SoftStart is a microprocessor-controlled startup sequence that ramps current draw gradually at power-on. This prevents speaker-damaging transients and stops the amplifier from tripping circuit breakers — a genuine concern with a high-power amplifier drawing large startup current. DC trigger in and out provide automated power switching with processors and control systems.
Convection Cooled — Fanless
The 9B³ uses convection cooling exclusively. There are no fans. This means no fan noise during quiet passages in film or music. It also means no fan motors to wear out over the life of the amplifier. Adequate ventilation clearance is still required — see the FAQ below for placement guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What else do I need to use the 9B³?
The 9B³ is a power amplifier — it needs a separate surround processor or AV preamplifier to feed it signals. Your processor needs dedicated pre-out connections, one per channel. From there, the 9B³ drives your speakers directly. You’ll also need speaker cables from each output to each speaker. Balanced XLR connections are recommended.
Is the 9B³ compatible with my speakers?
At 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 300 watts into 4 ohms, the 9B³ handles the vast majority of home theater speakers, including demanding low-efficiency designs. Because each channel has its own independent supply, all five can run at full power simultaneously. Call us at 800-942-0220 if you’d like help confirming a match.
Can I start with fewer than five channels?
Yes. The 9B³ is available in three-, four-, or five-channel configurations. If you start with three or four channels, you can add modules later. The chassis and internal infrastructure are already in place. Bryston sells individual channel modules separately for this purpose.
What is the Salomie circuit?
It is Bryston’s patented input circuit, developed with the late Dr. Ioan Alexandru Salomie. According to Bryston, 12 active devices at the first gain stage act as a super-linear buffer, removing distortion and filtering EMI and RFI noise before they reach the signal path. The 9B³ is the first five-channel Bryston amp to use it.
Why does modular construction matter for service?
Each channel module is a self-contained, removable assembly. If a channel needs repair, that module can be pulled and replaced without returning the whole amplifier. This matters over a 10-year ownership horizon. Most competing multi-channel amplifiers require a full return for any single-channel failure — the 9B³ does not.
Does the 9B³ work with home automation systems?
Yes. The built-in Ethernet interface provides a web page for monitoring and control from any browser. RS-232 serial integrates with Crestron, Control4, Savant, and similar platforms. DC trigger in and out handle automated power sequencing. Network control allows per-channel temperature monitoring, clipping alerts, muting, and firmware updates.
What is the difference between the 17-inch and 19-inch versions?
The 17-inch faceplate fits standard home audio furniture. The 19-inch version adds front handles and suits rack installation. A 19-inch PRO version is also available — it adds a rack-mountable dress panel and rear per-channel trim pots for fine level adjustment.
The amplifier electronics and specs are identical across all faceplate options. Both versions’ dimensions are listed in the spec table above.
What does SoftStart do?
SoftStart is a microprocessor-controlled power-on sequence. Instead of pulling full current at startup, the 9B³ ramps up gradually. This protects your speakers from the transient that would otherwise occur at power-on, and prevents the amplifier from tripping household circuit breakers — a practical concern with a large, high-power amplifier.
Does the 9B³ need ventilation? Can I rack-mount it?
Yes, it needs ventilation. The 9B³ runs warm and uses convection cooling — heat rises through the chassis naturally. Leave clearance above and around the unit. Do not install it in a sealed enclosure.
For rack use, leave at least one rack unit of open space above the amplifier, or use a rack with active ventilation. The 19-inch PRO version is the correct rack-mountable configuration.
