What You Need to Know
What Is the ZEN Air Blue, and What Does It Do?
The iFi ZEN Air Blue is a Bluetooth audio receiver with a built-in DAC (digital-to-analog converter). In plain terms, it takes the wireless Bluetooth signal from your phone, tablet, or computer and turns it into a clean analog audio signal that you can send to an amplifier, headphone amp, or powered speakers through a standard RCA cable.
If you have a stereo system, a vintage receiver, a pair of powered bookshelf speakers, or a desktop headphone amp that does not have Bluetooth built in, the ZEN Air Blue adds that ability. Just pair it with your device, connect it to your gear with RCA cables, and you are streaming wirelessly.
What makes the ZEN Air Blue different from basic Bluetooth adapters is that iFi treats it as a serious audio component. Instead of using a single all-in-one chip (which is what most cheap Bluetooth receivers do), the ZEN Air Blue uses separate stages for Bluetooth reception, DAC conversion, and amplification — each handled by dedicated, high-quality components.
Better Bluetooth — How iFi Gets More from Wireless Audio
Standard Bluetooth audio can lose a significant amount of quality compared to a wired connection. iFi designed the ZEN Air Blue to close that gap. The Bluetooth receiver uses a Qualcomm QCC5100 series chip running Bluetooth 5.1 for stable, long-range connections. It supports every major high-definition Bluetooth audio codec on the market: LDAC (Sony’s high-quality codec, up to 96kHz), aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, aptX Low Latency, AAC (used by Apple devices), LHDC/HWA (Huawei), and SBC (universal). Whatever phone or tablet you use, the ZEN Air Blue will connect at the highest quality your device supports.
The Bluetooth signal is then passed to a separate ESS Sabre Hyperstream DAC chip for the digital-to-analog conversion. ESS Sabre DACs are respected across the audio industry for their low distortion and high dynamic range. The ZEN Air Blue achieves a 109dB dynamic range and less than 0.0015% total harmonic distortion — impressive numbers for any DAC, let alone one at this price. iFi also applies their GMT (Global Master Timing) femto-precision clock to reduce jitter (tiny timing errors in digital audio that can blur the sound).
The output stage uses Texas Instruments low-noise op-amps and TDK C0G ceramic capacitors — components chosen for their low noise and stability. The result is a clean, detailed analog signal at 2.05 volts from the gold-plated RCA outputs on the back.
What Are Reviewers Saying?
AVForums reviewer Ed Selley tested the full ZEN Air range. He praised the ZEN Air Blue for managing what he called the all-important trick of elevating Bluetooth to something that sounds like proper hi-fi, noting strong performance with scale, weight, and authority. He observed that aptX and LDAC codecs brought clear improvements over AAC.
Headfonics reviewed the ZEN Air Blue and found that when paired with a desktop amplifier using LDAC, performance was very close to a direct digital feed from a wired DAC. The reviewer praised the low noise floor, vivid dynamics, and clean high frequencies, and recommended it for anyone wanting to add Bluetooth to an existing system without sacrificing sound quality.
Bloom Audio tested the ZEN Air Blue paired with an iFi ZEN CAN headphone amplifier and found it delivered detail and imaging that was a clear step up from listening directly through a phone or computer. They called the ZEN Air Blue a success at making audiophile-quality streaming even more affordable.

Features & Specifications
Every Bluetooth Codec Covered — Works with Any Device
The ZEN Air Blue supports every major Bluetooth audio codec available today: LDAC, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, aptX Low Latency, aptX, AAC, LHDC/HWA, and SBC. This means it will connect at the highest quality your phone, tablet, or computer supports — regardless of whether you use Android, Apple, or any other platform. iFi’s Bluetooth engine can also be updated over the air, so future codecs can be added as they become available.
ESS Sabre DAC — Audiophile-Grade Conversion at an Entry-Level Price
Instead of relying on the Bluetooth chip’s built-in DAC (as most budget receivers do), the ZEN Air Blue routes the digital signal to a separate ESS Sabre Hyperstream DAC chip. This chip features an integrated Time Domain Jitter Eliminator and delivers 112dB of dynamic range. The measured system performance is 109dB dynamic range and less than 0.0015% THD+N — numbers that translate to clean, distortion-free sound.
GMT Femto-Precision Clock — Jitter Under Control
Jitter is the term for tiny timing errors in digital audio that can smear or blur the sound. The ZEN Air Blue uses iFi’s GMT (Global Master Timing) femto-precision clock to keep the digital signal locked in step with extreme accuracy. The result is tighter, cleaner audio — especially noticeable in the clarity of vocals, the snap of percussion, and the precision of instruments in the stereo image.
Quality Components Throughout
TDK C0G capacitors (Class 1 ceramic) reduce capacitor-induced distortion to very low levels. Texas Instruments low-noise op-amps in the output stage provide wide bandwidth, low noise, and high output drive capability. These are the same types of components used in more expensive audio equipment.
Compact Desktop Design
The ZEN Air Blue measures just 158 × 100 × 35 mm (6.2” × 3.9” × 1.4”) and weighs 295 grams (0.65 lbs). It is small enough to sit on top of a speaker, tuck behind an amplifier, or sit on a desktop shelf. The Black edition features a sleek dark finish that blends into any setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the ZEN Air Blue work with iPhones?
Yes. The ZEN Air Blue supports AAC, which is the Bluetooth codec used by all Apple devices. It will connect and stream from any iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Keep in mind that Apple devices do not support higher-bandwidth codecs like LDAC or aptX HD, so you will be limited to AAC quality from Apple products. AAC still sounds very good — it is a significant step above basic SBC Bluetooth.
Do I need a separate amplifier or speakers?
Yes. The ZEN Air Blue is a Bluetooth receiver and DAC only. It outputs an analog audio signal via RCA jacks. You will need to connect it to something that amplifies and plays sound — such as a stereo amplifier with speakers, a headphone amplifier, or a pair of powered (active) speakers with RCA inputs. If you need help choosing, give us a call at 800-942-0220.
Can I use the ZEN Air Blue as a Bluetooth receiver for my own external DAC?
No. The ZEN Air Blue only has analog RCA outputs. It does not have digital outputs (no optical, coaxial, or USB audio out). If you want to use a Bluetooth receiver to feed a separate external DAC, take a look at the full iFi ZEN Blue, which includes digital outputs.
What is the difference between the ZEN Air Blue and the full ZEN Blue?
The ZEN Air Blue is the more affordable model. It uses a polymer (plastic) case instead of aluminum, and it only has RCA analog outputs. The full ZEN Blue adds a metal chassis, digital outputs (optical and coaxial), a balanced 4.4mm Pentaconn analog output, and an external Bluetooth antenna for extended range. Internally, they share the same ESS Sabre DAC architecture. If you only need analog RCA output, the ZEN Air Blue delivers excellent value.
Does the ZEN Air Blue include a power adapter?
No. The ZEN Air Blue includes a USB-to-DC cable, but it does not include a USB power adapter. You can use any standard 5V USB power source, such as a phone charger or a powered USB port on your computer. For the best sound quality, iFi recommends their iPower2 or iPower X ultra-low-noise power supplies, which are sold separately.
Are RCA cables included?
No. You will need to supply your own RCA-to-RCA cable to connect the ZEN Air Blue to your amplifier or speakers. We carry a range of interconnect cables — browse our audio cables or give us a call for a recommendation.
How far is the Bluetooth range?
The ZEN Air Blue uses Bluetooth 5.1, which offers excellent range and stability. In typical home use, you can expect reliable connectivity throughout a large room — roughly 20 to 30 feet in most setups. Walls and obstacles may reduce range. The ZEN Air Blue does not use an external antenna (unlike the full ZEN Blue), but reviewers have reported strong, stable connections in normal home listening conditions.
What do the LED lights on the front mean?
The ZEN Air Blue has two LEDs on the front panel. The left LED indicates the sampling frequency — blue for 44/48kHz, white for 88/96kHz (hi-res). The center iFi logo changes color to indicate which Bluetooth codec is active: yellow for AAC, blue for aptX, magenta for aptX HD, green for aptX Adaptive, red for aptX Low Latency, cyan for LDAC, white for LHDC/HWA, and off for SBC.
Can I pair multiple devices at the same time?
The ZEN Air Blue can remember up to eight previously paired devices, but only one device can be connected and playing at a time. When you power on the ZEN Air Blue, it automatically searches for the most recently used device. If you want to switch to a different paired device, just disconnect from the current one and connect from the new device.
