What You Need to Know
What Is the SourcePoint 8?
The MoFi Electronics SourcePoint 8 is a premium standmount (bookshelf) loudspeaker sold in pairs. It was designed by Andrew Jones, one of the most respected speaker engineers in the world, with decades of celebrated work at KEF, TAD, Pioneer, and ELAC behind him.
The SourcePoint 8 shares the same design DNA as its larger sibling, the acclaimed SourcePoint 10, but in a more compact form factor. Where the SourcePoint 10 uses a 10-inch driver and weighs nearly 50 pounds per speaker, the SourcePoint 8 uses an 8-inch driver and comes in at about 28 pounds — making it a much easier fit for small to medium-sized rooms, nearfield listening setups, and spaces where the larger model would feel overwhelming.
Like the SourcePoint 10, the SourcePoint 8 uses a concentric driver design. That means the 1.25-inch soft-dome tweeter is mounted right in the center of the 8-inch paper-pulp woofer. Both drivers radiate from the same point in space, creating what engineers call a “point source.” The practical benefit? A remarkably wide sweet spot, consistent sound whether you’re sitting dead center or off to one side, and pinpoint stereo imaging.
What Makes It Special?
At the heart of the SourcePoint 8 is MoFi’s Twin-Drive high-flux neodymium magnet system — the same motor technology used in the larger SourcePoint 10. This uses two opposing neodymium magnets with copper sleeves to create a perfectly symmetrical magnetic field, resulting in extremely low intermodulation distortion. In plain terms, the motor that drives the speaker produces fewer unwanted sounds, so your music comes through cleaner and more accurate.
The 8-inch paper-pulp woofer uses a brand-new corrugated surround (rather than a conventional half-roll rubber surround) that allows for improved linear excursion while minimizing diffraction effects on the tweeter’s output. The woofer cone also serves as a waveguide for the tweeter, which helps match the directivity between the two drivers and maximizes tweeter efficiency.
The crossover uses laminated-steel core inductors and is tuned at 1.6 kHz — the same crossover frequency as the SourcePoint 10. Andrew Jones designed the crossover slopes to seamlessly blend the woofer and tweeter output, minimizing out-of-band anomalies both on-axis and off-axis.
The cabinet itself is built from 3/4-inch-thick MDF panels wrapped in real wood veneer, with a sculpted, multi-faceted 1.5-inch-thick front baffle designed to reduce diffraction. Two rear-firing bass ports extend the low-frequency response. At 87 dB sensitivity and a nominal 8-ohm impedance, the SourcePoint 8 is easy to drive with virtually any amplifier rated at 30 watts or more.
What Are Reviewers Saying?
Kalman Rubinson reviewed the SourcePoint 8 for Stereophile and concluded it is a balanced, wide-range speaker that is enjoyable at all practical volume levels. He praised the wide, deep soundstage and noted it is notably transparent and detailed. John Atkinson confirmed excellent measured performance, easy amplifier load, and the specified 87 dB sensitivity. The speaker earned Stereophile’s Recommended Component status for 2025.
Neil Gader at The Absolute Sound (February 1, 2025) called the SourcePoint 8 the most satisfying compact he’d heard all year. He praised the forceful, controlled, and pitch-accurate bass, and noted the speaker settled the ear with its honest reproduction. He described it as a Golden Ear-worthy loudspeaker destined to stand the test of time.
Darko Audio (May 2024) praised the SourcePoint 8’s ability to handle both delicate and aggressive material with equal skill. The reviewer found orchestral works handled with aplomb, and the speaker equally at home with rock and electronic music at high volumes, calling it a real sonic communicator that conveys nuance whatever the genre.
Erin’s Audio Corner (erinsaudiocorner.com) conducted objective measurements and found the SourcePoint 8 to be subjectively better than the SourcePoint 10 in some respects, noting it does not exhibit the high-frequency lift present in the larger model. He described it as a more neutral speaker overall, with slightly less bass extension.
Steven Stone at futureaudiophile.com (July 2023) used the SourcePoint 8 as his primary nearfield reference for a month and was reluctant to remove them. He praised the midrange for its detail, harmonic complexity, and imaging precision, calling the speaker beautiful for nearfield listening.
The SourcePoint 8 won the EISA Standmount Loudspeakers 2023–2024 award. EISA called it a technically innovative and stylish speaker with a smoothly integrated, full-range performance and confident, engaging listen suited to both small and medium-sized rooms.
Dave Berriman at the-ear.net awarded the SourcePoint 8 a top rating of Five Stars.
Who Is the SourcePoint 8 Best For?
You want the SourcePoint family’s concentric-driver sound quality but need a more compact speaker for a smaller room or nearfield setup.
You listen to a wide variety of music — from acoustic and classical to rock and electronic — and want a speaker that handles everything with equal skill.
You value precise imaging and a wide sweet spot that works for more than one listener at a time.
You own a tube or solid-state amplifier rated at 30 watts or more and want an easy, amp-friendly speaker.
You want an award-winning, critically acclaimed speaker at a more accessible price point than the SourcePoint 10.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
The SourcePoint 8 uses a single pair of 5-way binding posts on the back panel. These accept banana plugs, spade connectors, or bare wire. Bi-wiring and bi-amping are not supported.
Two rear-firing bass ports provide bass extension. MoFi recommends keeping the speakers at least two feet from rear walls for best bass response. If your room requires closer placement, foam port bungs (if included) or aftermarket foam plugs can help tame bass reinforcement.
These are passive speakers — they need a separate amplifier or integrated amplifier to power them. With 87 dB sensitivity and a nominal 8-ohm impedance (6.4 ohms minimum), they work well with amplifiers from 30 to 150 watts. Reviewers have noted they sound excellent with everything from modest integrated amps to high-end tube amplifiers. If you need help choosing an amp, give us a call.
Darko Audio and Andrew Jones both recommend positioning these speakers with no toe-in (firing straight ahead) for the best treble balance, as the concentric driver design has slightly different on-axis vs. off-axis characteristics. Some experimentation with your room will help you find the sweet spot.

Features & Specifications
Concentric Driver Design
One Driver, One Point of Sound — The 8-inch paper-pulp woofer and 1.25-inch soft-dome tweeter share the same axis. This concentric (coaxial) arrangement means both drivers radiate from a single point in space. The practical benefit is a remarkably wide sweet spot, consistent sound from various listening positions, and precise stereo imaging that multiple reviewers have praised.
Twin-Drive Neodymium Magnet System
Cleaner Sound at the Source — The motor that drives the woofer uses two opposing neodymium magnets with copper sleeves to create a perfectly symmetrical magnetic field. This eliminates flux modulation — a type of distortion that adds unwanted frequencies to the signal. The result is exceptionally low intermodulation distortion, so your music sounds purer and more accurate.
Corrugated Woofer Surround
Better Movement, Less Distortion — Instead of a conventional rubber surround, the 8-inch woofer uses a corrugated surround that allows for improved linear excursion (more controlled back-and-forth movement) while minimizing the diffraction effects that can corrupt the tweeter’s output. This is a key engineering detail that helps the concentric design maintain its sonic coherence.
1.25-Inch Wide-Roll Soft Dome Tweeter
Extended, Smooth Highs — The oversized soft-dome tweeter with its wide-roll surround and large-diameter voice coil delivers smooth response extending to 30 kHz. Mounted at the center of the woofer cone, it benefits from the waveguide effect of the larger driver, which increases low-end efficiency and allows it to work optimally down to the 1.6 kHz crossover point.
Sculpted Multi-Facet Baffle
Reduced Reflections — The 1.5-inch-thick front baffle is sculpted with swept-back facets that reduce diffraction — unwanted reflections off the cabinet edge that can color the sound. You hear more of the driver and less of the cabinet.
Compact, Manageable Size
Big Sound, Smaller Footprint — At 18 inches tall, 11.4 inches wide, and 27.9 pounds each, the SourcePoint 8 is roughly 20% smaller in every dimension than the SourcePoint 10. It fits comfortably in small to medium-sized rooms, on a desk for nearfield listening, or on stands in a living room — places where the larger SourcePoint 10 might feel too imposing.
Easy to Drive
Amp-Friendly — With 87 dB sensitivity and a nominal 8-ohm impedance (6.4 ohms minimum), the SourcePoint 8 pairs well with virtually any amplifier — tube or solid-state, from 30 to 150 watts.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the SourcePoint 8 compare to the SourcePoint 10?
The SourcePoint 8 is roughly 20% smaller in every dimension and about 18 pounds lighter per speaker. It uses an 8-inch concentric driver (vs. 10-inch), has slightly less bass extension (47 Hz vs. 42 Hz), and lower sensitivity (87 dB vs. 91 dB). Erin’s Audio Corner found the SourcePoint 8 to be a more neutral speaker without the slight high-frequency lift present in the SourcePoint 10. If your room is small to medium-sized, or you want a more compact speaker, the SourcePoint 8 is an excellent choice. If you have a larger room and want more bass authority and dynamic scale, the SourcePoint 10 (or its Master Edition) may be the better fit.
Do I need speaker stands?
Yes, strongly recommended. The SourcePoint 8 performs best on sturdy stands that bring the tweeter close to ear level. MoFi makes dedicated 22-inch tall steel stands with a three-pillar design specifically for the SourcePoint 8. Other quality speaker stands from brands like Pangea Audio will also work. Stands are sold separately from this speakers-only listing.
What kind of amplifier do I need?
The SourcePoint 8 is amp-friendly, with 87 dB sensitivity and a nominal 8-ohm impedance. It works well with tube and solid-state amplifiers from 30 to 150 watts. Reviewers have tested it with everything from a 25-watt Musical Fidelity A1 (which Darko Audio said generated high volume levels) to higher-powered solid-state amps. If you’re not sure what to pair with it, call us at 800-942-0220.
Should I toe these speakers in toward the listening position?
Andrew Jones and several reviewers recommend starting with the speakers firing straight ahead (no toe-in) for the best treble balance. Because of the concentric driver design, there can be slight diffraction effects directly on-axis that are reduced when listening slightly off-axis. Every room is different, so some experimentation will help, but straight-ahead is a great starting point.
How far from the wall should I place them?
MoFi recommends at least two feet from rear walls for best bass response. The SourcePoint 8 has dual rear-firing ports, so it needs room to breathe. Darko Audio found the speakers performed best about 70 cm (roughly 28 inches) from the front wall. If your room requires closer placement, foam port plugs can help manage bass reinforcement.
Is this the same speaker in all three finish options?
Yes. The SourcePoint 8 in Satin Black Ash, Satin Walnut, and painted Satin White are sonically identical. The only differences are cosmetic. All three use real wood veneer (except the White, which is painted), and all come with magnetic grilles.
Can I use a subwoofer with the SourcePoint 8?
Absolutely. The SourcePoint 8 extends to 47 Hz, which is impressive for its size, but adding a subwoofer can fill in the deepest octaves for home theater or bass-heavy music. Darko Audio noted the speakers sounded fabulous with a subwoofer for sci-fi soundtracks and electronic music.
Can I bi-wire or bi-amp these speakers?
No. The SourcePoint 8 has a single pair of 5-way binding posts per speaker. Bi-wiring and bi-amping are not supported.
What else do I need to complete my system?
At minimum, you’ll need an amplifier (integrated or separate preamp/power amp), speaker cables, speaker stands, and a source component (turntable, CD player, music streamer, or DAC). If you’re building a system from scratch, call us at 800-942-0220 and we’ll walk you through the options at any budget.
