What You Need to Know
What Is the RPM 3 Carbon?
A turntable is the machine that spins your vinyl record and reads the groove with a stylus to produce sound. The better the machine, the more music it retrieves and the less noise it adds. The Pro-Ject RPM 3 Carbon is a belt-drive turntable built with engineering choices that are rare at its price: a 10-inch carbon fiber tonearm, an inverted bearing with a ceramic ball, and a fully decoupled outboard motor driven by an ultra-precise AC generator.
Pro-Ject Audio Systems has been making turntables in Europe since 1991. Their factory near Prague is one of the most respected turntable manufacturing facilities in the world. The RPM 3 Carbon sits in the middle of their RPM range — above the entry-level Debut Carbon series and below the RPM 5 and 9 Carbon — and is designed to offer a level of engineering normally found at much higher prices.
This version comes with the Sumiko Amethyst pre-mounted and aligned on the tonearm. The Amethyst is Sumiko’s flagship moving magnet cartridge, featuring a nude line-contact diamond stylus — a stylus profile more commonly associated with much more expensive cartridges. It ships ready to play. You just need to add a phono stage and an amplifier.
The Boomerang Chassis — Design With a Purpose
The RPM 3 Carbon’s most immediately striking feature is its shape. The plinth — the main body of the turntable — is a curved, boomerang or delta-wing shape made from MDF. This is not simply a style choice. The asymmetric shape removes material that would otherwise serve no purpose while helping to reduce the resonance pathways that carry vibration from the plinth into the platter and stylus. Less vibration reaching the needle means a quieter background and more of the music coming through.
The chassis is finished in a high-gloss piano lacquer. The Gloss Black version has a clean, modern look that works in any listening room.
Inverted Bearing with Ceramic Ball — Silent, Smooth Rotation
At the center of the platter sits an inverted bearing with a ceramic ball. In a standard bearing, the spindle sits in a housing and rotates. In an inverted bearing, the spindle is fixed and the platter rotates around it — with a ceramic ball as the only contact point between them. This dramatically reduces friction, and friction is the enemy of smooth, consistent platter rotation. Less friction means steadier speed, less noise, and a lower rumble figure — rumble being the mechanical noise that travels from the bearing into the signal.
The platter itself is made from MDF and is topped with a recycled vinyl mat. Vinyl as a mat material has good damping properties and a naturally low-resonance interface with your records.
The 10-Inch Carbon Fiber Tonearm — Built Beyond Its Price
The tonearm is the most technically ambitious component on the RPM 3 Carbon. It is a 10-inch S-shaped tonearm made from a composite of carbon fiber, aluminum, and resin. Most tonearms at this price use simple aluminum tubes. The carbon/aluminum/resin composite on the RPM 3 Carbon is produced using a three-step process involving heat treatment at 100 bar of pressure. The result is an arm tube that is exceptionally rigid and internally damped — which means resonances generated at the cartridge or from the record surface die inside the arm rather than traveling back through the signal.
A 10-inch arm is longer than the more common 9-inch design. The additional length reduces the tracking angle error — the deviation between the cartridge’s alignment and the perfect tangent of the groove. Less tracking angle error means lower distortion across the record, especially toward the inner grooves.
The tonearm is compatible with both moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC) cartridges — a flexibility not always available in turntables at this price. If you ever want to step up to an MC cartridge, the RPM 3 Carbon will handle it.
Outboard Motor with AC Generator — Precise, Isolated Speed
The motor sits in its own separate pod outside the main chassis. This fully decoupled motor design keeps motor vibrations physically away from the platter and tonearm. The motor is driven by an outboard 15V AC generator with a DC power supply — an unusually precise power delivery system that keeps the motor speed highly stable regardless of mains voltage fluctuations. Speed stability translates directly to pitch accuracy in your music.
Speed is changed between 33â…“ and 45 rpm by moving the drive belt between the two diameters on the motor pulley. This is a manual operation — you need to lift the platter to move the belt. There is no electronic speed switch on the RPM 3 Carbon.
The Sumiko Amethyst — Sumiko’s Finest Moving Magnet Cartridge
The Amethyst is Sumiko’s top-of-the-line moving magnet cartridge and is the highlight of this package. While most turntables at this price ship with basic elliptical styli, the Amethyst uses a nude line-contact diamond.
Here’s what that means. A “nude” stylus has the diamond mounted directly to the cantilever with no bonded shank between them — eliminating excess mass for better tracking and more accurate response. A “line-contact” profile is a longer, narrower diamond shape that makes contact with more of the groove wall than an elliptical stylus, retrieving more musical information and tracking more precisely at the same downforce. The combination is why Sumiko says the Amethyst “competes favorably with similarly priced MC designs” — that is genuinely high praise for a moving magnet cartridge.
The Amethyst also features an upgraded generator assembly compared to the other Sumiko Oyster cartridges, with a unique cartridge body designed to maximize performance. It is hand-crafted in Yokohama, Japan.
A Phono Stage Is Required
The RPM 3 Carbon does not have a built-in phono preamplifier. You need a phono stage — either a built-in one in your amplifier (look for a “PHONO” input), or a separate outboard unit. The Amethyst is a standard MM cartridge at 2.5mV output and 47kΩ loading, so any MM phono input will work with it. If you’re not sure what you need, call us and we’ll sort it out.
Balanced Operation — A Pro-Ject Advantage
All Pro-Ject RPM 3 Carbon turntables are configured for balanced phono output. The standard included phono cable is unbalanced RCA/ground — compatible with any standard phono input. If you have a phono stage with a balanced mini-XLR input (such as Pro-Ject’s Phono Box S3 B or DS3 B), you can upgrade to a balanced connection for a potentially significant reduction in noise. Balanced cables and phono stages are sold separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a phono preamplifier with this turntable?
Yes. The RPM 3 Carbon has no built-in phono stage. You need either an amplifier or receiver with a PHONO input, or a separate phono preamplifier. The Sumiko Amethyst is a standard MM cartridge, so any MM phono input will work. If you’re not sure what you have or need, call us at 800-942-0220 and we’ll check for you.
Is the cartridge already mounted?
Yes. The Sumiko Amethyst comes pre-mounted and aligned on the tonearm. You won’t need to do cartridge alignment yourself. After unpacking, you install the platter, attach the drive belt, set the counterweight, and you’re ready to play. The setup is straightforward but does require care — the included instructions walk you through each step.
How do I change speed between 33 and 45 rpm?
Manually, by moving the drive belt between the two pulleys on the motor pod. You lift the platter, move the belt to the appropriate pulley diameter, replace the platter, and restart. There is no electronic speed switch on the RPM 3 Carbon. An optional Speed Box controller can be added later if you want electronic speed switching.
Can I use a moving coil cartridge with this turntable?
Yes. The 10-inch carbon fiber tonearm is compatible with both MM and MC cartridges. If you upgrade to an MC cartridge, you’ll also need a phono stage with MC gain capability, or a step-up transformer. Call us if you want advice on MC cartridge options for this tonearm.
What is a nude line-contact stylus and why does it matter?
A “nude” stylus has the diamond mounted directly to the cantilever without a bonded shank, reducing excess mass for faster, more accurate response. A “line-contact” profile is a narrow, elongated shape that makes better contact with the groove wall than a standard elliptical tip — retrieving more detail and tracking more precisely. Most cartridges at this price ship with basic bonded elliptical styli. The Amethyst’s nude line-contact is a meaningful step above that.
Is a dust cover included?
No. The RPM 3 Carbon does not include a dust cover. An optional dust cover — the Cover It RPM 1/3 Carbon — is available separately. Verify current availability with Audio Advisor before ordering.
Can I use this turntable with a balanced phono connection?
Yes. The RPM 3 Carbon is configured for balanced phono output. The standard cable included (RCA/ground) works with any standard phono input. To go balanced, you need a mini-XLR phono cable and a compatible balanced phono stage (such as the Pro-Ject Phono Box S3 B or DS3 B). These are sold separately.
What’s the difference between the RPM 3 Carbon and the RPM 5 Carbon?
The RPM 5 Carbon steps up with an acrylic platter (quieter than MDF), a 9cc Evo carbon tonearm, a record clamp, and a different motor configuration. It also typically ships with the Sumiko Amethyst. The RPM 3 Carbon uses an MDF platter and the 10S tonearm, which is longer (10 inches vs. 9cc for the RPM 5). Both are excellent — the right choice depends on your budget and system. Call us and we can help you decide.
