Advance Paris turned thirty in 2025, and the APEX range is how the French company marked it. The A12 APEX sits at the top of that range. It is a limited edition, finished in black with white VU meters instead of the usual blue.

Underneath, the layout is a tube hybrid. Two ECC81/12AT7 tubes run the preamplifier stage behind the front window. A dual-mono solid-state section handles power, fed by two 280VA toroidal transformers, one per channel. It makes 190 watts into 8 ohms and 292 watts into 4 ohms.

Eight Digital Inputs, and a Phono Stage Besides

The digital side runs to eight inputs: three optical, three coaxial, AES/EBU, USB, and an HDMI eARC port for your television. Analog gets five RCA pairs and two balanced XLR pairs. A moving-magnet and moving-coil phono input sits alongside them, with its own ground post.

Outputs match that ambition. There are RCA and XLR pre-outs, a record out, two subwoofer outs, and two sets of speaker terminals for zones A and B. Headphones get 6.35mm and 3.5mm jacks. The chassis weighs 40.2 pounds and stands 16.9 inches wide.

What the APEX Upgrade Actually Changed

The headline change is conversion. Where the Classic used a Burr-Brown chipset, the A12 APEX runs an ESS9039. Over USB it takes PCM to 24-bit/192kHz plus DSD64 and DSD128. The optical, coaxial, and AES/EBU inputs each handle PCM to 24-bit/192kHz.

Advance Paris also reworked the supporting hardware, with lower-noise power supplies and ESS voltage regulators. The measured result is a signal-to-noise ratio of 104.8 dB and distortion of 0.047%, both taken at 135 watts into 8 ohms. Frequency response reaches 20Hz to 80kHz.

The Switch That Extends Class A

A High Bias toggle on the back doubles the bias current. In normal mode the amplifier runs in Class A to about 5 watts. Switch it to high and that extends to roughly 8 to 10 watts, which covers most listening in a normal room. Heat and power draw rise with it.

The phono stage offers three gain settings: MM, MC High, and MC Low for cartridges below 0.6mV. Capacitance loads at 100, 200, or 300pF. Note that moving-coil impedance loading is not adjustable. Headphone outputs carry their own gain and impedance switches.

Jaap Veenstra measured and reviewed the A12 APEX for Alpha Audio on January 7, 2026. He concluded that Advance Paris had "produced a superb amplifier with the A12 Apex", adding that "The new DAC is a real improvement."

Silviu Tudor, writing on July 15, 2026, found "a clear step forward in sound quality compared with previous generations" while noting that "the unmistakable Advance Paris sonic signature remains entirely intact" across the range.

Veenstra's one criticism is worth knowing before you wire it up. On the bench, "the difference between single ended and balanced is quite large", and "The Advance measures better through the balanced connections." If your source offers XLR, use it.
