Two Tubes in a Window, 190 Watts Behind Them

Advance Paris has built audio in France since 1995. The A12 Classic is the company's audiophile tube hybrid integrated amplifier. Two ECC81 tubes handle the preamplifier stage, glowing behind a window in the front panel. Everything after them is solid state.

The power section is dual mono, with its own toroidal transformer per channel. It delivers 190 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 280 watts into 4 ohms. Two pairs of binding posts drive two zones, with a 6 ohm minimum when you run both at once.

Analog sources get five RCA inputs and two balanced XLR pairs. The phono stage takes moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges, with switches for gain and capacitance on the back. Digital gets three optical, three coaxial, AES/EBU, USB-A, USB-B, and two HDMI ports, one carrying ARC.

Outputs are as generous. You get XLR and RCA pre-outs, a fixed record out, and two subwoofer outs with a switchable low-pass filter. Two headphone jacks sit on the front, 6.35mm and 3.5mm. The chassis is 16.9 inches wide and weighs 39.4 pounds.

A Class A/B Amplifier With a Class A Switch

Around the back sits a Hi-Bias switch. It raises the bias so the handoff between the negative and positive halves of the waveform happens near one watt. Below that, the amplifier runs in Class A. You pay in heat and power draw.

The bench figures back up the design. Signal-to-noise measures 103 dB, which is why the noise floor stays out of the way between tracks. Frequency response runs 10Hz to 35kHz at -3dB. THD sits at 0.007%, and channel separation is rated above 75 dB.

What the Digital Side Will Actually Take

Conversion runs through a Texas Instruments Burr-Brown PCM1796 at 24-bit/192kHz. Connect a computer to the USB-B port and the A12 Classic appears as a standard USB audio device, DSD included. The USB-A port is narrower in scope: it reads FLAC at 44.1 and 48kHz, plus MP3.

Power-up takes 30 seconds, counted down on the front display while the tubes warm. Tone controls offer plus or minus 10 dB and can be bypassed entirely. The two blue VU meters are real needles, calibrated to show power into 8 ohms.

What Reviewers Are Saying

Chris Eberle, writing for Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity on August 26, 2024, found that the A12 Classic "delivers high-end sound at a mid-fi price". He called it "truly tanklike in its construction".

Stephen Dawson, reviewing for What Hi-Fi? on March 25, 2024, concluded that the amplifier "lacks nothing when it comes to performance, nor indeed flexibility". He rated its headphone stages a match for a dedicated headphone amp.

Both flagged faults. Eberle's only complaint was the handset: "the remote feels cheap". Dawson listed "Long power-up time" among his cons, noting it "is not an amplifier for those in a rush", and found the USB-A port unable to index a large music drive.
