Streaming, Added to a System You Already Like
The Audiolab 7000N Play adds network streaming to an amplifier you already own. It holds a streamer, a converter and a volume control in one full-width case, and it is built to sit beside the 7000A amplifier and the 7000CDT transport.
You drive it from the DTS Play-Fi app or from Apple AirPlay 2, playing from a phone, a tablet, a computer, a network drive or the streaming services you already pay for. It is offered in black or in silver.
A Converter Worth the Case
Inside is an ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M, the same family of chip Audiolab uses further up the range, fed by a low-noise power supply of its own. That combination is what keeps voices clean and stops busy passages turning into a wall.
Play-Fi, AirPlay, and a Screen You Can Read
DTS Play-Fi carries music up to 24-bit and 192kHz over Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet, and reaches the major services, internet radio, and files kept on a computer or a NAS. It also groups with other Play-Fi products for multi-room playback.
AirPlay 2 handles the Apple side. Send music from an iPhone, an iPad or a Mac, and group the 7000N Play with AirPlay speakers elsewhere in the house without touching another app.
The Outputs Do More Than One Job
The RCA output runs fixed into an integrated amplifier, or variable so the 7000N Play controls a power amp or a pair of active speakers itself. Coaxial and optical digital outputs pass the signal on to a separate converter if you would rather use one.
A 2.8-inch color screen shows the service, the track, the format and the settings, and it will switch to an analog or digital VU meter while music plays. A 12V trigger brings matching components up and down with it.
What Reviewers Are Saying
What Hi-Fi? put the 7000N Play up against the Bluesound Node and the Cambridge Audio MXN10, and called it "a solid, well-balanced performer, even if it faces strong competition at this level."
Testing with Camila Cabello's Havana, the magazine wrote: "You certainly receive a neutral, well-spread sound from the 7000N," with the voice taking "centre stage as accompanying instruments are placed neatly around."
Who Is This Network Streamer Best For?
- You like the amplifier you own — this adds streaming to it rather than replacing it, so the money goes into the source instead of a second amp.
- Your house runs on Apple — AirPlay 2 lets you throw music from any iPhone or Mac and group it with speakers in other rooms, without another app to learn.
- You want to see what is playing — a 2.8-inch color screen shows the track and format from across the room, and turns into a VU meter when you would rather watch that.
- You may add a better converter later — coaxial and optical digital outputs pass the signal straight on, so the 7000N Play still earns its place if your system grows.
- The 7000N Play is a source, not an amplifier — passive speakers need an integrated or power amp between the two. Pair it with one from our integrated amplifiers.
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Join it to your network over Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet, then open the Play-Fi app or send to it over AirPlay 2. The RCA output goes to a line input on your amplifier, fixed if the amp controls volume, variable if it does not.
Coaxial and optical outputs can feed a separate converter instead, and the 12V trigger switches matching components on and off along with the streamer.
Pairs Well With
Building your system? Here are some great companions:
- Integrated Amplifier: The natural partner for the RCA output — browse our Integrated Amplifiers.
- Speakers: Finish the system with a pair to suit the room — see our Bookshelf Speakers.
- Cables: A good RCA run between streamer and amp — see our Interconnect Cables.
- Audio Rack: Give the full-width case a proper shelf — see our Audio Racks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can it connect straight to powered speakers or a power amp?
Yes. Use the variable RCA output and the 7000N Play takes over volume control.
Does it work with Apple AirPlay 2?
Yes. Send music from an iPhone, iPad or Mac, and group it with other AirPlay 2 speakers around the house.
What resolution does it stream?
Up to 24-bit and 192kHz over Play-Fi. DSD files are outside what the platform carries, so those play from a different source.
Can I use my own DAC with it?
Yes. Coaxial and optical digital outputs pass the signal on to an external converter.
How does it fit in Audiolab's streamer range?
It is the step up from the 6000N Play. The 9000N sits above it, with flagship conversion and Audiolab's own streaming platform.
How big is it?
17.5 inches wide, 13.4 deep and 3.1 tall, weighing 11 pounds, in black or silver.
