Monsoon Brings True-Concentric Copper to AudioQuest's Power Line
A power cable carries the last few feet of AC from the wall into a component. It can't add power a component doesn't draw, but a poorly shielded one lets noise ride in on that current.
AudioQuest's Monsoon steps up from the NRG series with True-Concentric conductor geometry and a surface of Perfect-Surface Copper+ over a Long-Grain Copper core, in either a C13 or a higher-current C19 termination. AudioQuest calls it an outstanding upgrade for high-quality source components and amplifiers.
Perfect-Surface Copper+ on a True-Concentric Core
AudioQuest says that with only Perfect-Surface Copper+ (PSC+) on the outside, Monsoon's conductors are essentially all PSC+ even though the core is Long-Grain Copper (LGC), because a digital or AC signal rides mostly on the conductor's surface. Both the superior metal and the conductor geometry are built to reduce ear-fatiguing Transient Intermodulation Distortion.
True-Concentric geometry pushes AudioQuest's strand arrangement further than the Semi-Solid Concentric conductors used lower in the range, so contact between strands happens at points rather than along lines, which reduces strand-interaction distortion.
ZERO-Tech, RF/ND-Tech and Directionality
Monsoon's ZERO-Tech design combines low DC resistance with zero characteristic impedance, delivering uncompressed high-current transients rather than constricting them the way many AC cables do. RF/ND-Tech adds a common-mode phase-cancelling array, together with proprietary dielectric materials, to drain radio-frequency noise away from sensitive audio circuits before it can couple in through the ground wire.
AudioQuest also controls the directional grain structure of every conductor in Monsoon, so noise is guided consistently away from the circuits it would otherwise disturb, whichever direction the current is drawn.
The Connectors, Explained
Monsoon is available with either a C13 or a higher-current C19 inlet plug, so it can feed source components or the heavier draw of an amplifier, and a standard NEMA 5-15 three-prong plug for the US wall outlet at the wall end. Choose the connector that matches your component's power inlet.
Who Is This Power Cable Best For?
- You want AudioQuest's first cable built around True-Concentric geometry — Monsoon is the entry point to that conductor architecture
- You are feeding a source component or an amplifier — AudioQuest calls Monsoon an outstanding upgrade for high-quality source components and amplifiers
- Your amplifier or power conditioner takes a 20-amp C19 inlet — Monsoon is offered with a C19 termination as well as the standard C13
- Your rack sits in a noisy RF environment — RF/ND-Tech's common-mode phase-cancelling array is built to fight exactly that kind of induced noise
- Your budget tops out below Monsoon's price — AudioQuest NRG-Z3 carries the same Perfect-Surface Copper+ metal at a lower price, without the True-Concentric geometry
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Plug the C13 or C19 end, whichever matches your component, into the IEC inlet on the back of your amplifier, DAC or other component, and the male end into a wall outlet or power conditioner outlet.
Then power up the system as usual. Other and longer lengths available. Call for prices.
Pairs Well With
A power cable is one link in the chain from the wall to your gear. It usually joins these categories.
- Power Conditioners — filter the whole circuit; the cable feeds the last few feet after it
- Integrated Amplifiers — the high-current load most power cables are built to feed
- Stereo Amplifiers — another high-current destination for the heavier gauges in this range
- Digital-to-Analog Converters — a low-current source component that still benefits from clean, quiet AC
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does shielding matter on an AC cable?
AudioQuest builds its power cables to keep radio-frequency and electromagnetic noise from riding in on the AC line and reaching sensitive circuits. A ground wire without that shielding can act like an antenna, pulling in exactly the noise a power cable is supposed to keep out.
What is ZERO-Tech?
AudioQuest's name for combining low DC resistance with zero characteristic impedance. It says most AC cables constrict or compress an audio-provoked current transient; ZERO-Tech is built to deliver that current uncompressed instead.
Do power cables wear out?
Every metal conductor oxidizes over time; it is unavoidable chemistry, not a defect. What varies is the rate. Denser, better-shielded conductors with quality plating oxidize far more slowly, so a well-made cable performs the same way for years instead of drifting.
Will this affect my system's ground safety?
No change to your safety ground. Every cable in this line keeps the full three-conductor path, hot, neutral and ground, exactly as building code requires. What differs from a stock cord is conductor quality and shielding, not the wiring topology.
Is there a step up?
AudioQuest Blizzard is the next rung. It moves the conductors to 100% Perfect-Surface Copper+ all the way through, not just on the surface, and adds a 72-volt Dielectric-Bias System.
